Sandra The Good Sport

Sandra Bullock collected her Razzie in person in keeping with her sly self-deprecating charm on the Oscar campaign trail. That's good sportsmanship!

...and brilliant game-playing, too. Even if Sandra B does lose the Oscar tonight (nobody's ever picked up both the Razzie and the Oscar in the same year) she's got heaps and heaps of goodwill to coast on as she nears the quarter-century mark of a crazy successful career.

<-- Sandra with her Miss Congeniality: Armed and Fabulous co-star Regina King at the NAACP awards last week.

She could probably even risk another Ernest Hemingway biopic or misbegotten sequel... or even an All About Steve level blunder or third Miss Congeniality toss-off. The "Get Out of Jail Free" card is hers.

Do you think she'll win tonight or are you feeling an upset? I know everyone seems to be on pins and needles about this category, despite the seemingly obvious (Sandra) conclusion.

Oh man I kinda want her to win the oscar now just so she'll make history by winning both. You gotta love her charm, wit, and self-deprecation. I kinda think she WANTED to win this. She'll be doing interviews about her historic double win decades from now being all "yes, I'm VERY proud. 2009 was my year!"

I'm hoping (and praying) for an upset in Best Actress race. otherwise it's going to be a very boring and predictable season.

I'm not feeling an upset. But I will be upset when she wins...

So go Gabby! (or Meryl or Carey)

I'm praying for Gabby or Carey to pull through and win this. It just can't be SaBu, it just can't!

I could understand this if she actually had a decent filmography. But what really good film did she ever do? Tell me!

I root for Mulligan but as it stands right now I wouldn't be upset with either of them winning. All I want is a great acceptance speech. The category I'm more riled up about is Best Picture. I would soooo love if Inglorious Basterds won!Cameron has had his moment with Titanic already and The Hurt Locker didn't do anything for me. But Tarantino has always been consistent with his craft and his films never disappoint.
And the scene in the basement is by far the best scene I've seen all year.

You know what I think as soon as she got that razzie nomination it killed her chances of winning. For example look at eddie murphy he was the front-runner in 2007 but lost.

I've convinced myself of a Meryl upset this past week. Rewatching Blind Side can only make it seem less worthy (the surprise factor's gone), anyone realizing Gabby or Carey is not viable is more likely to switch Meryl, and leaders have been fading all award season.

Plus, Meryl's name is synonymous with great acting. Sandra's name is synonymous with easily digested romcom stuff. That's got to be an advantage with the late deciders.

I'm really hoping against hope for a Gabby upset.

Don't want sandra and meryl to win wether gabby or carey hopely

I think that if Meryl Streep or Gabby Sidibe were not in the running, the other one would beat Sandra. But they'll probably each get a large share of the votes, allowing Sandra to triumph. But, if there's an Acting upset this year, it's Gabby Sidibe winning best actress.

I want Sandy to win because I have loved her since I was 10 and she has always been pretty damn cool in my eyes.

I want Meryl Streep to win because Gawd Damn it she is Meryl Street and she needs that third Oscar, she she should not be on par with Hilary Swank.

I want Gabby Sidibe to win because out of the five, she gave the most amazing performance and I have never gone from feeling sick just looking at a character to just wanting the best. Also if Gabby, had an Oscar, then at least Hollywood would have to pay attention to her.

Then because they are British, if the other two were to pull a surprise, I would be proud but then I come round and remember Tilda in Julia! Damn it I hate this category.

I'm rooting for Meryl from the very beginning of this Award season. Hope she'll get her 3rd overdue oscar tonight!!!
But, in the end, I think I could also bear a Sandra's winning. I really like her and appreciated her performance in The Blind Side.

Everyone feel sorry for me. I have Cablevision and live in New York. Nuff said.

the only reason i don't want Sandra Bullock to win is because it would further erode any credibility AMPAS may have. i see a Sandra win as the dumbing down of Oscar. i want the Oscars to remain elite and relevant, not like MTV or the Grammy's. somtimes Oscar gets it right. let's hope they get it right tonight.

I'm really hoping there's a tie and Gabourey Sidibe and Carey Mulligan both win.

Yeah, it's not gonna happen. But let me dream, I've still got another 8 hours to hope for this.

I'm okay with both Sandra Bullock and Jeff Bridges winning, both of them more for a body of work and decades of being hardworking, responsible, easy to work with and likeable, than for this particular performance (although the performances were fine). Bridges should have won decades ago.

I haven't seen "Precious" but I've seen the other 4 Best Actress performances, and liked them all. Not loved them. So I'm okay with Bullock winning. She's given some classic performances in light comedies, and I respect that.

I think Sandra will make history tonight for someone who will win the Oscar while being named Worst Actress of the Year.....

How wacky would it be if Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock tied (like they did at the BFCAs)? I know it's highly unlikely but has happened once before.

I still think Gabby, Carey or Meryl can surprise here (poor Helen Mirren). At least I hope it is one of them!

I really HOPE a gabby upset...Hey Nat, with ur experience on award shows do u see this possible? What are the odds?

Barry said...

I'm for Streep all the way! How can the Academy let her go (again) without a third Oscar win!

I really think that she will trump Bullock tonight.

Being frank...

Bullock is the frontrunner and Gabby the alternative. Meryl has an outside shot. Carey is a longshot (they're not giving it to her in front of Sandra, and Gabby has the sentimental vote rather than her). Helen is just happy to be there... specially knowing that this cements her chances of either a second win in the future or a Honorary Award in next years...

So I say, Sandra, maybe Gabby.

I'm past thinking there was an upset here...I'll be interested to see where she goes next...I do hope she keeps us on her toes.

Maybe this is the start of a new chapter...I'm okay with that as long as she doesn't try to hard.

txtcritic said...

Can't explain why, but I'm legitimately feeling like a Gabby upset might be in the cards.

I can appreciate her nomination, and I lovveee her, but I can't agree with her winning. There are just better performances.

I'm realllllyyyyyy hoping for a Gabby upset!
Like UGGHHHH it just has to happen.
She deserves it and I think it's time for the second black best actress, you know?

Like, I don't even mean that in a political way.
It's just sad to me that when a black actress actually deserves to win, it's not going to happen because of the way it really works.

I'm even hoping for Meryl. I won't be upset if Sandra wins, I'll be happy for her, but it'll be obviously more about politics than the actual performance (which happens all the time anyway, so....).

jeff bridges, sandra bullock - first nominee alphabetically in their category. Christoph waltz, mo'nique - last nominee alphabetically in their category. All four will be winners I guess?

I can't see a Gabby upset happening. I think Carey and Gabby are blocking each other for the exciting newbie votes and the ballots of members who only vote based on "THIS performance" ... i'm sure there's a few voters like that out there. so i think it's Sandra with Meryl having an outside shot. But only if the industry is tired of her losing every year. I think if she wins they'll give her a few years off. If not, she'll keep racking up the nominations until they finally cave ;)

oh, let's throw Meryl a bone for christsake.

A Sandra Bullock win will be the most embarrasing moment in Academy history. The backlash from her win will be long and unforgiving...

All we can do is pray for a Meryl upset..

Anonymous said...

If Sandra wins it will be the biggest story tomorrow, even more so if Hurt Locker wins Best Picture. There will be a bunch of stories analyzing how she did it, especially. That will change if something like UP, Inglourious or Avatar pulls it out. Nevertheless, the public at large (the reason why TBS just passed 250 million) is rooting for her.

Just finished watching precious and an education again,i thought i was a true gabby fan, but got puzzled watching carey´s exquisite performance, she´s marvelous. After rewatching both endearing performances my vote´s on her.

Final thoughts: Sandra Bullock does an excellent job,is her oscar to lose, but it would be awesome if we see later tonight CAREY MULLIGAN or Gabby accepting 2010 Academy Award for Best Actress.

:D

I'm wishing for a Sidibe upset personally.

i just don't know who is the inner here, the thing is i don't feel any of the other 4 are that win worthy classic perfs,v good solid esp gabby and carey but earth shatttering ground breaking never,if sabu wins i'll be ok with it but i am glad she will win over meryl when meryl will give more gr8 perfs and not win on a sorry we haven't given you a prize in 26 years type deal.

Tom said...

Why can't the Academy members get a grip and vote on the best performance of THIS YEAR? Why are people so incapable of putting aside their biases and giving the award to the best perf? If we pass over Sidibe or Mulligan, we'll be doing the same thing that was done when Winslet was passed over in '04 and Moore was passed over in '02, and on and on and on. Sometimes this causes actors to end up winning for a performance that's not as good as their best (Winslet, probably Moore, eventually), and other times they never are awarded.

It's just frustrating to see people rooting for the sentimental career Oscar voting, because that doesn't fix the problem-- it only insures that the same thing will happen in the future with one of the dissed nominees, when they get a belated win over someone else.

It's a cycle!

I think Sandra will win, but Gabby is right there primed for the surprise (that I've been saying could happen since nomination day).

I did say though that even if Sandra loses, she WILL win an Oscar the next time she does anything remotely Oscar-friendly due to all the good will she amassed this season.

Tom, that's very true. very very true. unfortunately they only ever stop the madness briefly... and usually not during the right years ;)
