So far I've failed in my attempt to get "actressexual" into the vernacular or the new edition of Websters. Only my readers and sympatico pockets of the blogosphere have adopted the awesomely useful word.
So as the spokesperson for this word that needed to be invented decades ago, I feel I must warn all my fellow actressexuals: Evening may sound like an orgiastic turn-on -- "Streep. Danes. Close. Redgrave. Collette. Richardson" admit it: you're hot just hearing the names pressed so tightly together -- but it's a cold shower of a disappointment. My review is up @ Zoom In

A disappointment? Oh say it ain't so - just that photo is getting me all hot and bothered

Damn, why couldn't this have been a winner? It's not like there's that many prestige projects playing wide in the summer for those who don't give a flip about "Spider Man 3" or "Shrek 3" or "Fantastic Four". Regardless, I'm seeing the film anyway, just for the cast.
Just to throw this out there, I would see Waitress for completion's sake. It's morphed into a surprise hit outside of limited release and it might become a factor in the Best Original Screenplay Oscar race. Oh, and it's a nice "actressexual" showcase, too. (Keri Russel, Cheryl Hines, and the late Adrienne Shelley are aces.)
I'm sad now.
It's all Claire Danes' fault....
:)
yes if we must blame someone it might as well be Claire! ;)
How disappointing. I practically had an orgasm at the previews. I'm not really surprised, though. So many star-packed prestige pictures have flopped over the years.
Glenn Close must have had an awfully small role, judging by the brief glimpse in the trailer.
I agree with Adam Luis, Waitress was really sweet with a terrific cast.
Bless Toni Collette.....when will it be her turn??
Toni Collette has had her turn already unfortunately - nominated eight years ago in supporting for The Sixth Sense.
And she won't be back - she's just not starry enough for Oscar these days. Sadly, gone are the days when the Marcia Gay Hardens of this world could pull it out of the bag...
I refuse to believe that Toni doesn't have at the very least a Supporting statuette in her future. REFUSE.
Toni Collete already won for the 6th Sense! I remember it exactly! What's that? Angelina Jolie? I'm not familiar.....
*sigh*, how disappointing about Evening. After I read the book, I must admit I thought of Big Fish, with Vanessa Redgrave in the Albert Finney bed-ridden role and Claire Danes wandering around as Ewan McGregor did, and how neither role was really full throttle enough for awards.
Interestingly, Anne Thompson liked the film enough to list Redgrave in her possible Actress list and Danes in Supporting over on her blog. But I guess it will have to be a big hit or better received than the rest of Focus's output to be remembered at year's end.
Well, I must say, the trailer was awful so I had a whiff of failure. Truly one of the worst trailers of the year. How do you have that cast and yet not manage to sell the picture?
Just the thought of Patrick Wilson's "that's our star" bit makes me break out into a rash. Revolting.
Still, I'll probably still see it at the cinema.
i don't use my watch when screening movies but Danes & Redgrave are both leads. the same woman... if anything Danes is more of the lead since she has way more dialogue (Redgrave is sleeping in a lot of her scenes ;) )
stephen g --oh yes. that's it exactly. it's very big fish only without Tim Burton's visual flair and also without that amazing bathtub scene or the terrific ending that almost made the whole thing seem great for a few seconds until you realized only the ending was great
to me, THE HOURS is one of the best pictures about women, what the heck, one of the best pic of all time...
There's no fantastical components to this film, right? The comparisons to "Big Fish" is mainly that the old character is reflecting on his/her life on their deathbed and through those reflections, are coming to some kind of conclusions about their lives for them and mostly for their children?
there's a teensy bit of fantastical yes... but in a more mundane hallucinatory way. no straight up "fantasy" though
There must be something wrong with me. Of all the people in this movie, I'm most looking forward to Hugh Dancy. Oy.
THE HOURS was a legendary, gigantic, monumental, homophobic and tiresome piece of crap. Truly one of the worst movies ever made. Suicide is painless, sure, but it isn't glorious.
I still regard The Hours as this decade's best film so far.
The way all its elements were constructed to make the whole - it just takes my breath away every single time I watch it.
Nathaniel, what a gorgeously written review! I love it when you write these. (And I fully expect to hate Evening, but I want to see Glenn Close's blood vessels pop out in her forehead when she gets shrewish.)
