[awkward silence]
er…well, even if you didn’t notice my absence, I was all excited to be back to the film experience. Yet here it is Monday and I got nothing for you. Nothing! Talk amongst yourselves. I’ll give you a sentence to complete.
“I miss ________________ [insert director, actor, whomever/whatever you’re pining for here]”

Alicia Silverstone circa mid-90s.
Kathleen Turner as a femme fatal.
Shelley Duvall.
... Cate Blanchett.
Kidding, um, Elisabeth Shue.
making out.
(Hollywood Blvd was closed off last night for No Country For Old Men)
... the days before CGI. I just tried watching "Transformers." I've learned my lesson (I hope). Michael Bay will never take up any of my time ever again, regardless of the reviews. This automaton has no sense of storytelling what so ever.
Emma Thompson. She needs to work more.
the cartoons of the 80's
...Robert Altman
Alexander Payne, 14th Arondissiment was simply not enough.
Angela Bassett being an amazing lead actress

Melinda: Right there with ya on Buffy.
also I miss Cher the ACTRESS.
I miss...
the simple, pure enjoyment of films I used to have. I don't know if it's just because I've grown older and more jaded and cynical or if it's due to the internet now presenting me with way too much information and too many opinions about films before I ever get to see them.
All too often I'm now not able to experience a film on its own merits. Instead I sit there evaluating it against my preconceived ideas of what it is and what it should be and what people I'd like to do well and who I want to see fail.
I hate that I've become like this and yet I'm unable to stop spoiling it all for myself.
Winona Ryder.

1980s film scores.

Soft focus.
...pretty much everyone you've mentioned - Alicia Silverstone, Kathleen Turner, Shelley Duvall, Emma Thompson, Angela Bassett, Cher the Actress, Winona Ryder. I also miss Mira Sorvino and Madeleine Stowe from the good old days when they ruled Hollywood. If there would ever be a movie in which all of them would star together, I'd die with a smile on my face the moment the closing credits started rolling.
I miss the gorgeous women of Twin Peaks, too. And I miss Once and Again.
Ralph Fiennes, circa Quiz Show and Strange Days, when it suddenly seemed like it was All Going To Be About Him for a long time. I was so into him, he was practically an actress.
I also miss the days before cell phones.
Actresses who've earned their ego.
A Burtonless Helena Bonham Carter

In addition to Cher the actress, Angela Bassett's career, dry ice, velcro, Robert Altman, James Dean, and Angelina Jolie's curves, I miss Susan Sarandon's, Robert Redford's, Rupert Everett's and Cher's pre-op faces.
And the Clinton years.
Oh, and River Phoenix (RIP).
And Star Trek series that didn't suck (that would be the first three and sometimes Voyager)
And Star Wars movies that didn't suck (again, that would be the first three).

anonymous 7:18 -it's true. This is why festivals are cool. it's hard to have as much information when nobody else has seen the movie either. but yes it's getting harder and harder to stay open minded. it's the info overload. and negativity seems to be piped into everything.
ferpecto i love to hear the names madeleine stowe and mira sorvino uttered. ever. Ah for the mid 90s hopefuls that didn't last to the aughts...
and anyway
everyone are y'all trying to seduce me by just listing my favorite actresses or what?
Lean, killingly handsome Kevin Costner, circa No Way Out and The Untouchables.
Oh, one more. How about lean, killingly handsome Jack Nicholson circa Five Easy Pieces?
Oh, oh, yes, Kevin Costner circa those days Ellen mentioned. Joined by Madeleine Stowe once again. Another Revenge, maybe? :)
Madeline Kahn, Babs being funny, and musicals that actually show entire dance numbers (not split-second jump-cuts).

...what I never had - a series collaboration between Joss Whedon and Aaron Sorkin. It would the smartest thing in any room it walked into, and would last about an episode and a half before cancellation.
But what an episode and a half!
Gandalf the Grey.
