Loves it. Seeing this opening weekend rather than the "Matrix" sequel it was counter-programmed against was such a smart move it felt like cheating.

I know, I know Nat - but it was still a fun movie, and better than I had expected. The "girl" never has to choose between being a career girl or being a wife, she gets to chose BOTH - and yes, maybe that's a fantasy but how often do we see women allowed that fantasy onscreen, and not have to submit to being tamed and domesticated? (In this case it's the guy who's domesticated.) I also loved the Shakespearian aspects to it (mistaken and hidden identities and so forth) which I don't recall any reviewer noticing beneath the Rock Hudson-Doris Day surface parody-tribute.

The irony of course was that the hottest chemistry onscreen was between Ewan and David, not Ewan and *you know who*.

i enjoy this movie too despite ________ I actually think Sarah Paulson is pretty superb at the 60s persona. she's good in period stuff... there's just a touch of the modern mixed in with the retro (perfect for the winking going on in both this and Notorious Bettie Page)

Such a great Ewan performance in this movie. The sock scene is hilarious, and the costuming is so delightfully campy.

I was actually pondering this last night: how the hell is it that McGregor does not have an Oscar yet? Will he ever win one? Will he and Kidman ever team up again? Will it be a musical? Could anything ever be as transcendent as Moulin Rouge!? The likely answer, sadly, is no.

Wouldn't it be fabulous if Baz directed a version of "Sunday in the Park with George" starring his two MR! leads? Or maybe it would be a disaster. Oh well, silly fantasy...

You inspired me to dig up my old review of this film, in which I said:

The movie has far too much fun to make the mockery work, and the snark is too easy. Wow! They were sexist in the 1960s! Who knew?! It’s way too easy to make fun of stuff like that; way too easy to look back and say “We’re better now, because now we have sarcasm!"

Regarding your review Deb - the ironic thing is that many movies are as sexist as ever. Consider POTC, for instance - the protagonist is a girl who wants to be free from the constraints of a stuffy euro-colonial life, who wants to have adventures and really LIVE. By the end of the film she's happily sewn up into a corset and dress kissing a rather boring young man, looking ever the part of a bourgois wifey. This is progress? In comparison to most contemporary films the ending took me by surprise, pleased me - and yes, that whole sock scene, (not to mention NASA and spies and so forth...delightful)

Nat, I'm curious - at what point exactly did the "love go" between you and Miss Z?

my love for she who must not be named started plummeting after 2001 and by march 2004 she was the unspeakable

OMG I had soooo much fun with this movie!!! It's contagious! :o) The whole thing feels like a dance I'd love to join in...

(remembering this makes me realise one of the reasons I didn't care too much for Miss Potter, same actors, a lot less chemistry between them...)

I liked the movie, didn't love it, but those costumes and sets were the best of 2003.

Red Satin Doll, I'm afraid I can't parse "POTC."

It's like this movie was made for the 20:07 series. Good thing you didn't wait for 20:08.

Deborah, I'm with you on POTC. I can't get past wondering if Passion of the Christ had any women in corsets in it.

On this movie, I'm essentially neutral, not having seen it. Though I've kinda wanted to ever since reading Jonathan Rosenbaum's review.

It probably would be a disaster Billy (Nicole does NOT have the singing chops for Sondheim, and I say that as a Nicole-fan. Nor do I think she really has the warmth, or at least "warmth" is not her strong suit onscreen - although she surprised me with MR). Tis a fun fantasy, though.

Nat, I was wondering what caused the breakup between you and Miss She - was it the tendancy to pretty much play the same characterization over and over? The inability to go beyond her comfort zone? The squinting squirrel-like expressions that were supposed to be "cute"? (I couldn't past over that squinty-cute thing in "Jerry McGuire", so I never had a love to lose with her.)
