7 Word Movie Review: The Last Station

Lively, engaging than (mostly) potent. Oscar bound.

(alternate 7 word review)
Mirren’s nomination chances? Golden.
McAvoy’s deflowering? Priceless.

(38 word gripe)
Christopher Plummer, Helen Mirren and James McAvoy all have lead roles in this film. Paul Giamatti, Anne Marie Duff, Patrick Kennedy and Kerry Condon are the supporting players of note... but Oscar campaigns will do what they will.

That review really only required two words: "McAvoy deflowering." I am there.

haha

sadly it is not Helen Mirren doing the deflowering whatever this picture may suggest ;)

This movie seemed a little stuffy to me at first, but now I'm a little excited about it. (Though, I'll admit that Giamatti makes me more excited than anyone else in the cast, not sure why. Maybe because he's awesome?)

P.S. Saw a sneak-peek Amelia, and I was surprised by how abominable it was--which is saying something, cause I went into it thinking it was going to be lousy. No characters, just caricatures.

I want to see this!! The whole movie too. :p

James it's definitely not stuffy. That might be the best thing about it. It's resolutely unstuffy.

Swank is out nat you can come out of hiding now.

Does this raise hopes for cornish and pfeiffer.

- Does Plummer deserve the nomination?
- Is his situation a gray area (Clive Owen in Closer, Rachel Weisz in The Constant Gardener) or a category fraud if campaigned in supporting?
- Since Best Actor is weak, shouldn't SPC campaign Plummer as lead and McAvoy in supporting? Everybody knows old guys have better chances for Best Actor.
- Are you sure of Mirren's chances? Best Actress is crowded and she has gotten a lot of kudos for The Queen. She'll get no critics again, and this is type of movie that needs critics, isn't it? (And the critics' darlings will be Mulligan and Sidibe, I think. The popular choices are going to be Streep and Cotillard, clearly. And if they want a veteran as a filler, why not Michelle Pfeiffer?).

And, of course: if AMPAS loves somebody, this person can get a nomination even if the movie is awful and gets bad reviews. Remember Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Then, it's too soon to dismiss the great Hilary Swank. She got nice reviews, and from the critics who panned the film.

Time to uptade Best Actress since you've seen almost all contenders. The last ones are Cotillard and, maybe, Ronan (she'll go supporting, I think).

Can Christopher Plummer please get some recognition?

C'MON!

Gah. I want James McAvoy to be nominated for an Oscar so bad. Should've been nominated for his work in Atonement or Last King of Scotland.

Can't WAIT for this film.

I'm so jealous you got to see this! It's one of my most anticipated of the year. Love the author, and love James McAvoy. =) And I like what you said - it comes off as "resolutely unstuffy" to me.. which I love.

I'm predicting Mirren and Plummer (SA) right now, but I'm worried McAvoy won't make it =( He deserved to for both Atonement and The Last King of Scotland, that's for sure. But I think he'd have the better chance in supporting and Plummer in lead.

Who gave the best performance, in your opinion?

Oh, and I see you hated Amelia. I haven't predicted Swank all year, and I still don't think she's getting in. Especially if Ronan and Cotillard are campaigned in lead.

Is it just me or do the first seven words not make sense? "Lively, engaging than (mostly) potent." Should than be "and"?

Walter L. Hollmann said...

holy shit Anne-Marie Duff is in this? I just got super extra excited for this movie!

NATHANIEL R said...

i guess it should be "then" rather than "than"

what i really wanted to say was

lively engaging first half. mostly potent second half. oscar bound.

but that's more than 7 words.

NATHANIEL R said...

Cal obviously SPC should campaign both Plummer and McAvoy as leads since they both are... but i'm an idealist so there you go. It's very Last King of Scotland structurally in that way... McAvoy is the vessel through which the audience experiences the film but it's about Whitaker/Plummer. The only difference being that there's a third lead because essentially Whitaker is Plummer/Mirren ;)

does this make sense
if that makes sense.
huh?

where am I?

DJ too soon to call my favorite performance but at first glance it's McAvoy. I think he's so ridiculously good in period dramas (see also: last king, atonement)

I'm rooting so bad for James...his snub, both in Atonement and Last King was criminal.
I'm worried they'll try to push a nomination for lead, and the Academy will ignore him again... :(

Andrew K. said...

Yeaaaaaaaaaah! Cannot wait to see this. And you did have me thinking it was McAvoy + Mirren. Oh well. I'm still in.

Nate said...

I like James so I'm glad he's good in this.

What's going on with the Best Actress game?

Carl Joseph Papa said...

Will McAvoy nab a nod? In my dream awards he would have been nominated twice already, one for Scotland and the other for Atonement....

Luke said...

Anyone else think that Christopher Plummer TOTALLY got robbed in '99 for The Insider? Shame, shame Academy... and Globes... and SAG. Guy can't catch a break!

Sean said...

I'm so excited! This has been one of my most anticipated films of the year since I first heard about it.

Arkaan said...

Luke, that was the opinion at the time. I myself prefered the now invisible Wes Bentley, but the fact that Michaels Caine and CLarke Duncan got nodded before Plummer is rather annoying.

NATHANIEL R said...

Douglas i dunno. McAvoy is so talented but the roles he's best are not Oscary roles even within Oscary films. It's too bad there are so many unwritten rules about what type of characters bring awards attention to actors.

his character is quite passive in The Last Station which will be the main obstacle to a nomination. But he's really good in it.

ferdi said...

the movie is good, though a little conventional and toot pathetic in the end. The strenght is the cast, with powerful perfomances by Mirren, Mcavoy and Plummer. Mirren's nominations is locked.

ferdi said...

I think it's very difficult and subtle what McAvoy does with his character in The Last Station. Nothing is more difficult to play than purity and innocence without looking dumb. He's great. Oscar prefer roles who scream "I'm a good actor! Look at me how good I am to chew the scene!"
