Yet another example of how women are far better thespians than men…

MYSTIC RIVER may be a testosterone-fuelled piece, but these ladies give the film its delectable sting.

I revisited this film recently and was bemused to find that its aged extremely well. Linney gives a weird and memorable turn. Harden overworks some scenes but ultimately her physicality and ambivalent fear really hits it out of the park.....strong stuff.

Laura Linney has that creepy last moment in this film. Just brilliant. We love her!

I'm not sure how I feel about Laura Linney's character shift (?) at the end of Mystic River. It feels totally out of left field and not richly earned for me. Mystic River to this day feels like a really good episode of Law and Order: Criminal Intent that got nominated for Best Picture somehow.
And everyone talks about how good guest star Luke Perry's performance was as Jimmy Markum, then he gets an Emmy nomination...wait, what am I talking about.

I don't remember many specifics about this film, and I'm not eager to rewatch it. I liked it at the time, though.

FAR better? Aren't they just adept at different sides of the craft?

I love Marcia Gay Harden in this film, she balances grief, naivety, suspicion and anguish all at once perfectly.

And Laura Linney floored me with ehr sudden Lady Macbeth speech.

The is movie is so brilliant, and belongs to the group of Clint's movies that deal directly with his vision of the poisoning power of violence, like The Outlaw Josey wales and Unforgiven. It's Clint at his best, directing like it was still 1949, in a very straight-forward JohnFordian way. The influence is not only in the filmmaking side: their vision os the way Americans live in violence is very similar. The tragedy of Jimmy here is not much diffrent from Ethan's in The Searchers.

Just beautiful.

I like par3182's rewrite of this scene more than almost anything in the movie except Sean Penn dressing down his father-in-law and Marcia Gay Harden falling apart at the end.

I love Laura's monologue at the very end- so creepy and powerful!
