16 Years Ago Today...

...the starry The Age of Innocence team celebrated at the Venice Film Festival: Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder, Michelle Pfeiffer and Martin Scorsese. Expected to be a major Oscar contender it came up short in the big six categories with only Winona Ryder snagging a nomination.

Which early festival success this year isn't going to go the distance?

I don't really have good feelings about The Tree of Life or The White Ribbon for some reason. Could be wrong of course.

Nine.

I second that NINE nomination. And while I love Jane Campion, I wonder about BRIGHT STAR too. It's getting released very soon and I think it might fall into sept/oct abyss that swallowed THE BRAVE ONE a few years ago.

THE WHITE RIBBON will have legs. Sony Pictures Classic's picked it up and they do very well with pedigreed directors like Haneke, plus it's playing the New York Film Fest which is probably the most difficult film festival to get into and has the best of the best.

Hey Nathaniel don't exclude the adapted script from the BIG caterogies. I think it's more important than the supporting actor/actress.

I was thinking White Ribbon too. Precious and An Education seem very Oscar friendly. I also don't see Bright Star getting any serious nods. Actually, I don't want it to. :p There is something about that film. It scares meeee.

DDL looks quite dashing in that suit.

I have a feeling that Bright Star won't turn out to be the Oscar darling that everyone thinks it's going to be.

Nathaniel...what do you think of this movie/La Pfeiffer in it. I would have nominated both her and Daniel for their performances. Of course they never recognise him when he's a romantic lead...but I thought they were good...but I guess this was one period piece too many in 93

I don't like your SUPPORTING ACTOR lineup, Nat. Kodi Smit-McPhee MUST be there, in the predictions, nominated.

Damon
Bridges
Smit-McPhee
Tucci
Waltz

Wouldn't it be nice if Winona was part of the Oscar race this year?!?!

I feel the same about 'Bright Star' and possible 'An Education' aside from Lead Actress.

I always have liked that line Martin Scorsese has used saying that The Age Of Innocence is his most violent movie he has ever done. Do people get that ?
