Wee Fan. Enormous Star.

A random thought on Monday morning...

If you have never met a famous person you should believe the stereotypical general reaction: "they're so tiny!" This is not to say that actors are shorter than average. It just betrays the curious distorting effect of seeing someone in reality whom you have only known blown up to incredible proportions on movie screens or who have perhaps occupied more space than is natural in your dreams. It would probably take celebrities all being 7' tall in real life to not provoke this "they're tiny!" reaction.

I myself am 5'10" which is the exact average height for a white male (indicated by the red line and Matt Damon in this illustration -click to enlarge). I find it terribly disconcerting to imagine meeting Johnny Depp. We would look directly into each other's eyes. Despite the largesse of my fandom we are the same size?! I almost don't believe it. But it's true. It was somehow more comforting to brush shoulders on the sidewalk with the 6-foot Uma Thurman my first month in New York seven years ago. It also felt right see Hugh Jackman (6'2) towering over his fans waiting for autographs outside his Broadway show. Meeting the 5'5" Julianne Moore who I have (literally) built shrines to and painted portraits of and seeing her look up at me while I babbled incoherently in her divine presence was just totally bizarre.

They are tiny in real life, despite their enormous stature in our celluloid dreams.

Did you intentionally position Brad's hand like that?

Stupid question?

Wow, we all could be winners!

I saw Julianne Moore on the street a couple of years ago and was dumbfounded by how tiny she was. Really does blow the mind.

I'm just happy that Jake is (supposed to be) 6 feet, if he were a shrimp my heart would rend itself twain.

I've also had the pleasure of seeing Julianne Moore in person and my overall impression wasn't her tinyness, but her flawless skin and lovely hair (oh and her kids were beautiful). But yes, I agree that celebs, who despite their fame are actually human like the rest of us, tend to be of average height. This fact can lead to disappointment of a kind when we see them in person. (Though as a tall woman (5'9) I swoon at the idea of running into 6'2 Hugh.)

P.S. I got a copy of Stardust yesterday and began reading it on the subway this morning.

Johnny seems taller, but the rest seem about right.

I saw Chloe Sevigny once and she was very small (5'7"). I'm... 5'11? Something like that.

Who's the short guy 3rd from right in the pic? (My moniter is really dark, I can't see his face.)

I would make a good movie star then, cause I'm 6'3''. But really, if you think about it, all the greats are short or at most average. Hoffman, Kingsley, Bernal, Ewan, etc. and anyone from a long time ago are not tall people.

Also, Julianne Moore is average height for a woman (5'5''); she's not really tiny. Though I could understand how it'd seem that way (especially to me!). Reese and Natalie are the tiny ones.

And what does Juli do to her skin? It didn't look spectacular back in Safe... just normal. Since she got rich, she must've started a really kick-ass skin care regimen. Good for her.
