Happy New Year !!!

Can you believe it's 2010?

Are you superstitious about how you start your filmgoing year? What will the first movie be? I'm aiming for Avatar in IMAX and a couple of other revisits before the top ten list commences in a day or three.

I have two New Years Resolutions related to film:

1) Try not to get depressed seeing Avatar in your eventual Top Ten of 2009.

2) Watch every film that I haven't seen yet on Nick Davis' Best of the Decade list, starting with Morvern Callar.

I am quite superstitious not only about the first movie of the year, but also about the LAST movie I see at the end of the year. So, this time, I watched a triple feature: Coraline, Up and (500) Days of Summer... (3 movies that made me happy this year) and I timed it so that, at exactly midnight, the scene that was playing was Joseph Gordon-Levitt's dance sequence. I thought it would be awesome to begin 2010 with that... As a way of saying: this year is gonna be your year! You're gonna be as happy as he is at that moment! (and not as depressed as he is 3 seconds after that scene!)

My first film will be AVATAR. Haven't seen it yet and I'm pretty excited. My last film of 2009 was UP IN THE AIR and now I'm Anna Kendrick for the win. Hopefully AVATAR can give me an eventual Best Picture to really get behind and root for!

Bensunce -- that is awesome. i admire your sense of showmanship/time management.

Robert -- i hate that people get depressed when i don't agree with them. P.S. Morvern Callar is awesome.

Jude -- i keep hearing people say that Avatar is the frontrunner. I'm not buying it. I don't see how it's something that AMPAS will go for in a big "win" way. Maybe several nominations though.

last movie i watched this year was 'up in the air' and it left me completely satisfied. i'm all for it to win best picture.
first movie i'll be watching will be where the wild things are. finally! i haven't seen it yet, and i'm really excited.

The last two months of 2009 were... rough (to say the least) so I'm just hoping 2010 is better. First film of 2010 at the cinema will hopefully be "Bright Star".

Nathaniel & Co. -

I've now done the side-by-side comparison on "Avatar" in IMAX and 'regular' 3D, and if there is anything special which IMAX offers that you don't get from the 'regular' 3D, then I am damned if I can tell what it is.

The groundswell is just starting for an "Avatar" Oscar sweep (and maybe a successful campaign for a Saldana nomination?) Instead, in a month, we may be talking about the risk of backlash affecting its chances.

Here's hoping that the Teen decade is the best ever for one and all.

I was watching Fight Club as the year began. What a great movie. (I'm actually offended by how terribly it got snubbed by Oscar. Where was Supp Actress, Supp Actor, Editing, Visual Effects, Costume Design...sigh...)

I might hit Up in the Air tomorrow. Hopefully it'll be a good note to start off on.

Happy new year!

I started my year with "Police Adjective", gripping movie. loved it. It was long but it was still great.

As for "Avatar", I have seen it thrice already. Still enjoy it. I think that it is my feel good movie of the year. But that's 1/8 of my day so I guess I won't be seeing it anytime soon.

Don't finish your top ten without seeing Christophe Honoré's La Belle Personne. Didn't you loved Love Songs? I can't remember.

Try also Two Lovers!

Mine will be my first-ever screening of Pandora's Box, on the big screen and with a live organist, in Goatdog's theater. That's gotta be a great way to start, right?

@Robert: That's nice of you to follow along with the list!

I too am going to see AVATAR. But this morning I had a dream with Heath Ledger in it, in a Imagitorium sort of way. I think I would like to see DR PARNARSIS

O crap, i was going ot say that the last movie I watched last year was MR FOX, but no! I snuck into 2012....oh so sad. What a way to end the decade. Wait....no, I watched FAMILY GUY: SOMETHING SOMETHING SOMETHING DARKSIDE. I'm slightly redeemed.

Last movie of the year: Zombieland. Fun and most importantly, short!

First movie of the year. TV double feature: Motherhood, a most likely forgettable movie, but it was nice to see Uma Thurman so different from Kill Bill. And right now, watching Life of Brian. I just l-o-v-e that movie, never get tired of watching it.

Happy New Year to everyone!

I L.O.V.E. Bensunce's idea! I'm totally going to steal it for next New Year's Eve (not with 500 Days - but a similarly poignant film). I couldn't movie-watch this NYE though - because it was a 'turn of the decade', I felt it had to be a 'big' one (my friend's Evelyn Waugh Vile Bodies-themed party).

Last movie of the decade for me was, unfortunately Princess Diaries 2. Only because it was on the TV while I was having my lunch - and I hadn't seen it before and I got sucked in a (pre-Brokeback, pre-Prada Anne, singing! Julie Andrews singing! Abigail Breslin! Chris Pine looking cute and geeky and gorgeous!...)

First movie of the new decade: District 9 (trying to catch up with '09 films before making my best-of lists). Maybe not the best film with which to start a decade -- and on a hangover. Hmm...

(And, to answer your question Nathaniel, I really can't believe it's 2010! And I really can't believe I'm 25! And I really can't believe it's a new decade -- already! I was only just getting into the last one. Damn, I sometimes wish I wasn't such a nostalgist. Too much wallowing in the past when I should be embracing all that's new and exciting...) Happy 2010 everyone!

Last movie of 2009: It's Complicated. (It wasn't, and I'm glad.)

First movie of 2010: The Princess and the Frog, on Sunday. I think that will be perfect start to the year.

@ Nick & Nat: I saw Pandora's Box on July 1 as the closing film of the Los Angeles Conservancy's Last Remaining Seats series at the Orpheum (with live Wurlitzer organ). It was glorious.

My first movie of the decade was a rewatch of School of Rock. I didn't plan it as such, I came home from work EXHAUSTED after functioning on 2.5 hours sleep and it was just starting on television and I couldn't help but succumb. It's been a few years since I watched it and I was so surprised by the whole thing. Not because of how funny it is, because I definitely remembered that, but of how generous and good-hearted it is, without ever becoming pandering or saccharine. It's so all-encompassing. Love the relationship Jack Black has with the kids. Plus, I teared up a little when they killed it at the show.

...okay, maybe I should go to sleepvnow.

The first movie of the decade for me was "Precious".

Hopefully I will be able to catch 'It's Complicated' this weekend also.

Ya need a few laughs after seeing 'Precious'.

I watched Avatar on new year's eve so that would not count. I was blown away by the visuals and made me remember why we go to movies in the first place...to bask in the magic of it all...I am looking forward to seeing UP IN THE AIR as my very first.

Last movie of 2009: Elizabeth

First movie of 2010: Where the Wild Things Are.

Guess I don't make any sense...

Collateral was the first movie I saw this decade and Avatar the first one in the theatre. Both excellent and can't wait to see the latter again IMAX-style.
