I think people should start keeping an eye out for films that deal with asexuality. (The Bone People, written by an author who identifies as asexual and described the feeling in different words in the book, would actually be a nice start with a bit of auto-prestige attached due to that Man Booker Prize win.)

Will Brenda Blethyn or Emily Watson ever get another Oscar nomination? They both came out of seemingly nowhere in 1996 and received somewhat 4th or 5th slot nominations in 1998, and then squat with the big man-both have gotten love from other awards bodies (Blethyn a Globe & BAFTA and Watson a BAFTA), but I wonder if we're ever going to see these two return to the Kodak.

I saw a pic of Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct on some random website and I immediately thought she was snubbed for an Oscar nom. It was the year Emma Thompson won for Howard's End, and although ET richly desreved her award, I think Sharon should have been in that group of nominees. Sharon OWNED that role.
@Volvagia
Although I'm no expert on asexuality, I'm sure some medical professionals might belive it is related to a chemical imbalance.
@John T
Brenda won the Cannes prize too! Sometimes I think that is harder to win than an Oscar!

John T, you reminded me that Shirley MacLaine hasn't been nominated for as long as I live! I'd like to see her back at the ceremony.

David Fincher's "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" might actually be that rare English-language remake/re-adaptation that surpasses the original, which is in dire need of trimming in the first hour and final 20 minutes. Finding an actress who can capture Lisbeth as well as Noomi Rapace will be a challenge, but other than that, I'm actually looking forward to the potential energy Fincher will hopefully bring to the story, which is more than I can say about another remake of a Swedish film... *glares daggers at everyone involved in "Let Me In"*

I always thought it'd be interesting if you wrote a post about music videos inspired by classic movies. There are so many obscure references!!
Aha's Take on me for example is a take on Jean Cocteau's Orphee; The Cardigans' Hanging Around is a spoof of Polanski's Repulsion, Beyonce's Get me bodied is a rip off of Sweet Charity; Red Hot Chili Pepper's Otherside is a reference to The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari and Smashing Pumpkins Tonight, Tonight is based on Melies' Trip to the Moon. Can anyone think of any other movie references in music videos?

@Deus Ex Machina

I think there might be a Bob Dylan music video that has an homage to 8 1/2, namely the scene where Guido is floating over the beach only to be pulled down with a rope by the producers.

I miss Meryl. I want to know when she's going to make another movie. I'm already having withdrawals.

Are you thinking about the Dylan 'biopic', I'm Not There, because the Jude Quinn character is floating in the air like a kite??

SoSueMe: I know my stuff here. Just to inform you, there have been studies on rams that have shown that it occurs naturally, not because of any "chemical imbalance."

I really wish I had HBO so I could watch I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale. A genius gone far too soon.
@Jeff, this would also help Meryl withdrawls - I love her to death and I'm glad she's getting the break she deserves :)

Hi! I'd have so much to say... I've just started writing my own blog about my movie fascinations. Do you think it would be ok if I posted a link here?

The John Cazale doc was wonderful. All I've seen from him is "Dog Day Afternoon," so again, I seem to have a lot of catching up to do. Meryl's part in it was great. Didn't realize they were that close.

Also, I'm seeing "Blue Velvet" this weekend! In a theater! Can't wait!

Nate,

You're gonna love Manohla Dargi's response to the critical response to STC2.

John T -- i suppose the fates of Blethyn and Watson lie in the hands of casting directors. They'd need the part to sustain it since they're not big enough stars to get noms based on their names (as we know many stars do)

James T -- i'd love to see Maclaine nominated again, too. One last great part would be so fine.

Jason -- I shall look it up. But i hate when people say things i've been saying but say it better and on larger platforms. I've heard she brings up The Hangover which is what i brought up in my hysteria over those pans.

Will Tim Burton ever make a really decent film again?

I love Emily Watson.....she's so cute. I can even get past the accent......

Volvagia,

I agree...there have been studies that have shown that asexuality occurs naturally in rams, but, just to inform you, there have been studies that actressexuality occurs naturally in rams as well.
