Brittany, Miranda, Naomi, Charlotte, and Viola

The Top 50 "Actresses of the Aughts" Countdown has begun. The latest entries? Hit and miss stars Naomi Watts and Julia Roberts, the legendary Charlotte Rampling, the underused Miranda Richardson and Viola Davis, the undervalued Marisa Tomei and Brittany Murphy, and the gut-busting Christopher Guest trio: Catherine O'Hara, Jane Lynch, and Jennifer Coolidge.

ooh, i got all swoony at the mention of catherine o'hara, jane lynch and jennifer coolidge all in the one paragraph. in my version of the oscars o'hara and coolidge would be supporting actress winners for 'a mighty wind' and 'best in show' respectfully.

where are you hiding parker posey?

I'm curious to see how high Renee will be on this countdown.
Also very curious as to who will be #1. Neither Moore nor Pfeiffer deserves it. I'm guessing Kidman, Winslet, and Dunst will be pretty darn high... and I'm thinking one of them has to be in the top spot. Hmmm...

i'm thinking Julianne Moore could still be taking the top spot. There's also patricia clarkson, samantha morton, isabelle huppert, and maggie cheung to consider.

Jeez, you really dont like Julia Roberts do you? Even when you like her you can't just come out and praise her. Calling her a 'movie star' in 'Erin Brockovich' rather than just saying that it was a brilliant performance.
What, pray tell, was so unwatchably smug about her in 'Confessions of a Dangerous Mind' or 'Oceans Eleven'? She was barely in either movie and what little of her there was was inoffensive enough. To be honest I'm surprised you didnt just leave her out of your top 100 list.

Oh...and Brittany Murphy is just horrendously bad

i think brittany murphy, if she starts picking better projects, could really come to be recognized as a real actress. i think she certainly has the talent.

Hmm...Personally, I can't imagine anyone but Kidman at number one. None of her performances are brilliant the way Julianne Moore is brilliant in Far From Heaven, but, seriously, who else has been so consistently exciting?

Winslet, it's gotta be Winslet.

And what about Toni Collette?!

Toni, Kirsten, Patty, Nicole and Kate will all be very high. Moore and Pfeiffer too. But I don't think they'll be #1... this just hasn't been their decade for the most part. Juli has 2002 and really not much else... at least not until 2005 is done. And what has Pfeiffer even done besides White Oleander? Don't mean to be brash, but neither has been "the" actress of the aughts, not by a longshot. The 90's were their true glory days.
Winslet has been solid, even brilliant more than once, but she hasn't the volume of work necessary, I don't think, to be a true #1. I love her to death, and she really is coming into her own now. but I think the late 90's (Sense, Titanic, Holy Smoke) were when she shined the brightest. One of those three should've won her the oscar.
From a purely fame/breakthrough/history stance, Halle Berry belongs on this list, but Nathaniel hates her, so... yeah. I don't really like her either.
Whoa, forgot about Blanchett... she'll be up there... but not #1. She doesn't make enough good movies.
Dunst will be a major player, I think. Ever since 2000, she's been doing consistently great work (especially according to Nathan) and has made a LOT of movies. but she's so young.
Streep also will be high (2002)... ooh, Portman, too... (2004)... Scarlett too (2003).
I'm still thinking #1 belongs to Kidman, though. I actually love her less than most I just mentioned (and I think she's sort of peaked now), but she has OWNED the last few years. 2001/2002 speaks for itself. I'd put her at #1.

I think it's a battle between Kidman and Winslet for number 1, with Moore being #3 (based 90% on Far From Heaven presumedly).

I was so glad to see you appreciate Daryl Hannah enough to put her in the top 50! I also am a fan of her Dancing at the Blue Iguana work, strangely enough.

Chloe Sevigny will almost definitely be in my top 10 when I blatantly steal this from you.
