What I'm Reading Right Now

Jeanette Walls on the non-affair of the Match Pointstars

Joe Reid's hilarious takedown of the dumbass BFCA

I Don't Like You That Way's Kevin Federline Theory

Gawker on the Swank/Lowe split. [But I, personally, would like to debunk the attendant lavender myth. I'm defending Swank for once. Wow. If this were a lavender situation, it's ridiculous to assume that it's Swank who is the beard. What would one have to gain from marrying Chad Lowe? It's not like marrying Tom Crui... well, it's not like marrying someone who could give your career a boost. And it's not like Hilary already was an Oscar winner when they got hitched, so it also wouldn't make sense for him to be the beard. Personally I think this was a pretty standard marriage that just happened to fall apart. Best wishes to them both --well, except for Swank career-wise. No more Oscar noms for you missy, you'll already had more than your fair share of Oscar's red carpet.]

Yeah, I did a lengthy play-by-play on the BFCA's last night and posted it in my blog. Coincidentally, I went over the same unintentionally hilarious moments as Joe. Good job.

Yeah, if anyone were gay, it would be Chad, cause, well, he's kind of effeminate, even moreso than Swank is masculine. But I don't think that was the problem. I always thought part of why they clicked was that they were both not exactly gender-normal, and they balanced each other out. I think she basically just got too famous for him. This happens all the time (Juli's first marriage, Kate's first marriage, etc... not to compare Swank to them, but you know).

Thanks, Nick, you too.

Makeup finalists are now up on oscarwatch. Geisha, Kong, and Sin City are all ineligible. But ROTS, Libertine, Mrs. Henderson, History of Violence, Cinderella Man, and New World are. Narnia is looking like the only lock.

In other random news, Phantom of the Opera became the longest running broadway show in history today.

I'd say it's going to be Chronicles of Narnia and The New World (throw in The Libertine if they have a third).

adam k. said...

Don't they always have a third, unless not enough films make the bakeoff? I think it could be Cinderella Man, ROTS, Henderson, or even aHoV... hard to say.

lol, poor Memoirs that now only gives it two nominations. Possibly three. I am currently thinking that it's cinematography will miss and only get Production Design and Costume - but even Costume designers have been known to not go with the obvious (last year's Phantom, speaking of the devil)

When I did my new predictions the other day on my blog I had Memoirs, Narnia and Cinderella Man. Substitute Memoirs for New World and I think that'll be it. ROTS would be the alternate right now I think. But who knows - they went with Mar Adentro last year...

but, yeah, Narnia is looking like this year's Lemony Snickets. December released family movie with decent tech support. Win's the most obvious.

Oh, and yes - Hilary got way too famous for Chad. It's not like he was gaining anything from their marriage career wise so he had no reason to stay.

Poor them though. Any couple breaking up is bad. And they're the first big couple of 2006 to get the axe.

V. funny piece by Joe and Nick. Except for Nick's comment on Sandy Bullock. I love Sandy. I can't believe that person said Cache was from Australia! lol. We're about a million times the size of Austria as well. Did Michelle Williams have a video speech or anything? I knew she was in Australia with Heath (the premier was last night).

I loved it that on the news this morning at the start they have a rundown of what's on and they go "and Australia's Oscar favourite Heath Ledger outraged over his controversial film's banning in the United States"

and, like, it was about that one cinema that banned it and he said he had heard about how West Virginia wanted to ban it or something (the state's leaders wife, if I remember correctly) and Heath was all "if it's love, it's love. Doesn't matter if it's heterosexual or homosexual."

I also loved Heath's comments about Matilda.

(from the newspaper)

"(Matilda's) been a big hit, had a big opening weekend and there'll probably be a sequel". hah. That newspaper's article was headlined "Ledger angry at ban on film" and was on page 3... god, when Australian media grabs ahold of something, it really grabs ahold.

Oh god, how cute would it be if they brought Matilda to the oscars? I hope they do. But they won't. That doesn't happen. Sigh.

Sandra Bullock has a small following of bored housewives and gay men. She deserves all the terrible chick flicks she makes.

So is Jonathan Rhys-Myers gay or...? I mean, not to pigeonhole the guy or anything but I kept asking myself that question all through Match Point.

NATHANIEL R said...

jrm is not gay. he was boning Toni Collette for sometime and she's too cool to be a beard.

adam k. said...

He is pretty and vain enough to be gay, but alas he is not.

I enjoyed the bit where Scarlett complained that he was a gossip and liked shoes, and was like a girl that way. Hah.

Goran said...

Regarding Jonathan Rhys-Meyers' budding preferences --> watch him run in Bend It Like Beckham and you decide if a straight soccer-playing man runs like that.

Kamikaze Camel said...

I always thought JRM was a bit effeminite, but...

adam k. said...

Maybe he's bi? Just like Brian Slade.
