The Black Dahlia indeed. What a gorgeous, crazy splat of a movie. That cinematography nod for Vilmos Zsigmond remains one of my favourite Oscar mentions of the last decade.

I know the gold prize for bonkers in this movie goes to Fiona Shaw, but I actually really like Hilary Swank here too. But I like her the same way I like her in The Gift, meaning I am laughing at her but can't figure out if she's in on the joke or not.
Yes, JA! Swank is really very good in it, like a pitch-perfect bad performance. She's over-the-top and mannered like, let's say, Jean Simmons in Angel Face or Joan Bennett in Scarlet Street, but that's a right wrong. The movie is so stylizes that her "bad" performance totally works. She took a lot of chances in The Black Dhalia.
Well, it is a DePalma. If you levelled some of the performances in his films (Montana, Kleinfeld, Linscott, Garcia and Costner in The Untouchables, among others) against what actors hold as "great acting", you acquire an understanding of why the Academy hasn't nominated DePalma for Best Director yet. His Hitchcock meets Preston Sturges tone results in the genuinely great performances in his phenomenal films being passed over. (Connery was just not acting in The Untouchables, even though Huston's The Man Who Would Be King is, aside from location, very much the prototype of the performance style DePalma would grow to be famous for.) Performances in DePalma's 1980 and beyond films should have been exempt from Razzie consideration. Why? It's "worst performance of the year", not "battiest performance of the year." If the characters of Dressed to Kill were batty, (sigh) they were supposed to be.

I think The Black Dahlia is better than any of the five best picture nominees that year.
Liked it!!! Johansson was all wrong and who knows if Swank really was in on the joke or not and as for Fiona Shaw how did she get away with "THAT PERFORMANCE" she gave,god that must rank as 1 of my top 10 most awful woeful misguided turkey performnces ever!! That staircase scene makes me cringe!!!
Fiona Shaw is AWESOME in the film. You're missing out on pure joy there, Ripley.

craziest ballsiest performance in many a year.
Fiona Shaw was phenomenal. That movie was hilariously insane and I love it for being so.
