The Gluttonous Golden Satellites

You guys. I really can't be bothered to talk about the Golden Satellites (a.k.a. The International Press Academy, who can't even be bothered to update their own website) and here's why: When you nominate everyone* under the sun, it's hard to take you seriously. The Satellites have more categories than any of the important precursors and then, as if the orgy of categories weren't enough, they have 7 to 10 nominees in every category. I kid you not. It's... insanity. I can't care. But if you must, Awards Daily has the list.

*Even when you nominate 7-17ish people per category (some categories are doubled up between types of genre) you will still, rather amusingly, be snubbing people who are noteworthy. How do you have 7 comedy actress nominees, for example, and not include Emma Stone in Easy A? Her movie may be a frail invalid but she is its primary caregiver, its walker, its equilibrium, its lifeblood, its court jester, its boss, and its whole goddamn raison d'etre. And whenever her movie starts death rattling she performs CPR. Shunning her in a category of 'let's nominate everyone!' is S-T-U-P-I-D. I don't expect Emma to win favor with the Golden Globes either exactly, but since they'll only have 5 nominees the shunning won't be as tough to take. I'm expecting that we'll see: Bening, Hathaway, Hawkins, Moore, and ??? as the five girls walking the red carpet as "comedy" nominees once the Globes roll into town. But I sure wish someone would recognize the "comedy" in the comedy category and throw Stone a bone.

I enjoyed these nominations, especially with inclusions like Noomi Rapace from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Romain Duris from Heartbreaker, plus all the love for Please Give and The Eclipse, but it's hardly helpful for Oscar and even Golden Globe predictions when they don't bother whittling down the list of nominees to a reasonable amount, leaving us with a giant field of contenders, including some major snubs (like Mark Wahlberg, for instance, whose film garnered supporting nods). Interesting, if nothing else.

I didn't realize Hawkins' film was a comedy, per se. I guess she will take up one of those comedy globe spots. Hathaway I think is not a given, but could definitely still be there, as could Gyllenhaal, since they're likeable and were apparently good in their film. There's still Gwyneth, Reese, Julia, Cher, and Stone fighting for the last spot.

"Cher, and Stone" sounds like Sharon Stone...

Anyway, the other interesting thing was that Sean Penne popped up in the supporting category. Is that how he's campaigning for oscar? That's new. If so, he could totally shake up that list.

And I think Cotillard has to be considered a contender in supporting actress after landing here. With a category in that much flux, why not? She totally fits the definition of hot, young actress, generally considered best in show in a widely nominated film, that they can always nominate if they're feeling lazy.

So actress - drama at the globes will be Portman, Kidman, Lawrence, and...? It's actually fairly open after that. I could see Watts, Williams, Swank or Swinton all placing (probably the first two though). And what's going on with Lesley Manville?

They also snubbed Mark Ruffalo and Helena Bonham Carter.

But it's nice to see some attention for people who won't be mentioned the whole awards season: Catherine Keener, Michael Douglas, Tilda Swinton, Kristin Scott Thomas, Andy Garcia and Pierce Brosnan.

And it's nice to see the Indie Spirit Award's snubs Ryan Gosling, Robert Duvall and Julianne Moore on that list (although it doesn't mean anything probably).

What do you think about Halle Berry's chances for 'Frankie and Alice' ? I don't have I've seen her mentioned on this blog yet but her movie seems to slowly be gaining momentum, the 1st trailer is on IMBD's main page and I think it opens in LA this weekend?

Lillian -- i'm guessing that FRANKIE & ALICE will join BIUTIFUL and THE WAY BACK and maybe even ANOTHER YEAR as movies that should have started campaigning much earlier and won't have much to show for it in January.

Looked at the 2007 Mus/Com lists and... what the hell!? Clive Owen for Shoot Em Up, Ben Kingsley for You Kill Me (looks like the meet cute version of Grosse Pointe Blank) and Richard Gere for The Hoax over Simon Pegg for Hot Fuzz, John C. Reilly for Walk Hard and Depp for Sweeney Todd!? Two of those misses make it STARBLEEPING. The other is completely inconceivable unless they completely lost their brains.

My stab at a good Mus/Com list:

John C. Reilly, Walk Hard (got this right)
Johnny Depp (considering they're grouping musical and comedies together, I think they got this right. Would you feel otherwise, Nat?)
Ryan Gosling (got this right)
Simon Pegg (I'm guessing this was a DID YOU WATCH ANYTHING RELEASED BEFORE OCTOBER miss.)
Seth Rogen (Another DID YOU WATCH ANYTHING RELEASED BEFORE OCTOBER miss.)

I feel about the Satellites the way you feel about Woody Allen: they were so great when they were great, I can't let go, even when they're bad. Give a competitive prize to Kimberly Elise for Beloved or Edward Norton for American History X and I'm yours forever. (And they don't actually seem nearly as preoccupied with prognosticating Oscar as a lot of other groups are. Even if they're irrelevant.)

NATHANIEL R said...

Nick -- okay you can give them that. and i'm all for groups that don't try to procrastinate and just name what they think of as "best"... but is that what they're doing? With so many nominees it feels far more random and 'lets invite every studio!' than a perception of what's "best"

Paltrow will apparently be going drama for Globes. So the last spot is probably Witherspoon vs. Cher (vs.Aguilera? - they could totally do that, 'worthy' doesn't matter in this case). But Emma Stone should be there, imo she's more deserving than even Bening/Moore.
Actress drama is a total mystery beyond Portman/Kidman/Lawrence (and even Lawrence could miss here, and get the rest, Melissa Leo-style.)

Was the "penne" typo a comment on Penn's relative hollowness as an actor? Just wondering. And in regards to Leslie Manville: This likely puts her out of the top five. So that probably means Hawkins is in. (That's a good thing too. I want this makeup nom.)

Nice to see "The Ghost Writer" getting a bit of love, especially directorially...though I'd have rather seen Olivia Williams get an acting nod than Pierce Brosnan.

Ditto the love for "Animal Kingdom"...and, of course, for Tilda.

Note to Volvagia: In 2007, "You Kill Me" was a gem of a screwball rom-com with a particularly good performance from Ben Kingsley...and Richard Gere was very good in "The Hoax." I'd certainly say that they both deserved nominations more than Simon Pegg (and maybe also more than Reilly, though I've only seen bits of "Walk Hard" on TV). And...it had nothing to do with post-October releases..."You Kill Me" was in theatres in July, and "The Hoax" came out in the spring.

While I'm happy about a few (go Scott Pilgrim vs the World!), I was still hoping for a few more surprises since there were so many nominees.

I hope Emma Stone can land some type of awards praise (heck, even a MTV or Teen Choice award) for Easy A because that film (and her) were such a delightful treat to see in theaters.

Also, weird to see them overlook Mark Ruffalo, since I thought they loved him after nominating him twice for Best Actor in 2008.

They snub Stone but nominate Mary-Louise Parker for Red? Oy.

Actually, the latter part was commenting on the Globes. Which actually does look like they watched nothing before October. Sorry for confusing. But...onto your statements. 1. The stoic liar of The Hoax is such a lazy archetype by this point that even the best realization of it isn't anything to get excited about. 2. You Kill Me looked in the trailer (and has a plot synopsis that doesn't assuage suspicion) to be uselessly overacted quirky miserablism. Always underplay when confronted with that. See Peter Capaldi in Local Hero for a delightful example. 3. Having said that, a combination of either the Satellite's two or my two would be better/more honest than the Globes citations of PSH (more honest) in The Savages and Tom Hanks (better) in Charlie Wilson's War.

volvag -- nah, Golden Satellites mean nothing in terms of Oscar. so a snub for Manville means nothing.

if Manville is having any problem it's that the film is getting off to such a weak start in terms of campaigning.

Walter -- i know. I was trying to be diplomatic ;)

Klemen -- i love that about the globes. There are always more mysteries than there are with Oscar (because it comes after there's been so much whittling down)

Emma Stone will get nominated for a globe for sure!
If Reese Witherspoon can for Legally Blonde she sure can

NATHANIEL R said...

anon -- but Legally Blonde was a huge hit. Easy A wasn't. I don't think it'll happen for Stone. But at least she set herself up for a big career. :)

I love the unpredictability of Globes as well,it makes them more exciting. And a cool and deserving win like Colin Farrell for In Bruges would never ever happen at the Oscars. And even the ceremony is better (more fun)in certain aspects-there's always someone drunk for example:)
