There Are 41 Songs (& Vids). There Is Only 1 CHER.

41 Songs were declared eligible for Oscar's least cinematically relevant prize a short while ago. Wheeee!

We only didn't share them yesterday because every single damn thing happens in the same week. I'd be more excited about this category if recent years hadn't seen the big show trending away from original performers singing their original songs. If I can't see Cher doing her Burlesque number(s) on Oscar night, someone is going down.

The Academy will choose up to 5 of these songs as nominees, depending on how their voting goes. I've included video accompaniment when available - listen (and watch up).

 Which are you rooting for?

Please god no. No more honors for this eyesore movie.

"Alice" from Alice in Wonderland
"Forever One Love" from Black Tulip
"Freedom Song" from Black Tulip

oooh, now this is more like it. Sadly, it's only a partial video.

"Dear Laughing Doubters" from Dinner for Schmucks

eat pray love & going the distance.

"Better Days" from Eat Pray Love
"If You Run" from Going the Distance

"Dream Big" from Pure Country 2: The Gift
"How I Love You" from Ramona and Beezus (no vid but here's the song)

Remember Landon Pigg from Whip It? His punishment for treating Ellen Page like crap is singing a Shrek song.

"Darling I Do" from Shrek Forever After

"Noka Oi" from Six Days in Paradise (no video but here's the song)
"This Is a Low" from Tamara Drewe
"Rise" from 3 Billion and Counting

Two likely nominees from animated hits.

"I See The Light" from Tangled
"We Belong Together" from Toy Story 3
"Eclipse: All Yours" from The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (it's not embeddable which saves me from having to promote Twilight. Yay.)

I'm still kinda pissed that Justin Timberlake survived but Janet Jackson's career was demolished. Just sayin'

"Nothing" from Tyler Perry‘s Why Did I Get Married Too
"A Better Life" from Unbeaten

"Shine" from Waiting for 'Superman‘
"The Reasons Why" from Wretches & Jabberers (here's the song)

Name your preferred five songs in the comments. Or maybe you think they should just dump this category all together?

I've been listening to all these songs as I'm in the middle of other things to really see what's best. As I write this, I've just gotten to Janet Jackson's song, which means I've heard about everything. I think my top five are:

"You Haven't Seen the Last of Me"
"Le Gris" (my absolute favorite)
"Sticks and Stones"
"I See the Light"
"We Belong Together"

One quick note about snubs: I thought that "Country Strong" from the film of the same name was a much better song than the other two, which I did manage to find on YouTube. I hit pretty much the same stumbling blocks as you, but I created a playlist with 31 of the songs: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=D0A80893B976E8A1

Julian, you're ALL BURLESQUE. ALL THE TIME. :)

I think you're going to get your wish Nate-Cher is too iconic for them to plug in a tween, and she's got an Oscar & will likely tear the house down. I think that song (and her perf) are in.

I think Janet's career's been out of gas since before that. Just sayin'

Song "Country Strong" on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6-d_lr2AE8

I so hope that these are the nominees:

- You Haven't Seen The Last of Me
- Me and Tennessee
- I See The Light
- If I Rise
- Shine / We Belong Together / Bound to You

And I hope they let them perform on stage.

Can you imagine John Legend, Dido, Tim McGraw, Cher, Christina Aguiler, Randy Newman and movie people who can actually sing (Gwyneth Paltrow, Mandy Moore) on stage?

Swell. That is so not happening.

Probably one of the songs from L'ILLUSIONISTE will find a place among the nominees.

Janet isn’t a survivor. These days she suffers from Michael syndrome – blaming outside forces for you’re producing inferior music you don’t think is inferior.

I don't know. My picks would be

I See the Light
You Haven't Seen the Last of Me
Me and Tennessee
And two other spots I'm holding until I've heard most of the nominees...

Anyway, I think they've learned from last year's mistake and we'll get our live performances, one way or the other.

And Anne Hathaway will probably have a number somewhere, judging by this http://t.co/Mcp4JH3 .

Unless, of course, the guys at PS22 are supposed to join Cher...

I vote for dumping this category altogether, especially if they won't let the original singers sing their songs on stage anymore. I mean, who cares if a song gets an Oscar? It's not like films and actors whose marketability increase after winning. Music is music is music Oscar or not Oscar.

Having said that, I'd love to see Cher on stage come Oscar night.

Epic Fail not having the songs performed live. These are my picks, but I'm sure they'll stick Randy Newman in there:

~ Little One
~ Shine
~ You Haven't Seen The Last of Me
~ Me and Tennessee
~ I See The Light

Interesting, thanks Julia. I was familiar with this choir, but on the video Anne says "I've been listening to you for 2 years now" and so I interpret that to me that this year the hosts (or at least Anne) are taking an active part in shaping the program? (I'm hoping that also means a fresh writing team.)

Ok, I may be a Cher fan, overly happy she's back in a movie, but You haven't seen the last of me is so so awesome.I hope it's nominated and she performs. Would love to see Gwyneth perform too.

No songs from Scott Pilgrim?

What happened?

"Shine" is an amazing song. It looks like its being dismissed pretty easily here when it shouldn't be. I know it's an end credits song, but the credits are done in an artful way that will hopefully benefit it with voters who now vote against those songs. It's just like "An Inconvenient Truth" in that regard, which makes sense since the same guy directed both films. And please I hope that they perform the songs in their entirety this time. That hip-hop dancing to the scores instead of the songs being performed was some heinous BS. Maybe these new producers will do a better job with this year's show. I'm not giving it a lot of hope though.

You can hear all of "Chanson Illusionist" on the Milan Records website for the soundtrack. It's a sweet little waltz, but nothing musically revolutionary like The Triplets of Belleville. The musical gag of famous French singer impersonations will most likely be lost in the 41 song marathon screening. It's cute.

Other than "I See the Light," I can't figure out what would get nominated. It might be a two song year.

Leehee said...

Ok so as much as I love "I see the Light", I'm quite pissed that "Mother Knows Best" didn't make this list. Just imagine, they could have had Donna Murphy singing at the Oscars! arrrggghhhh

Hi Nathan,

Fyi, the song for NARNIA 3 has different version from each country, and the version you embedded is the German version covers by Victoria S., and the actual nominee is originally sing by Carrie Underwood.

I also shared 32 full song, 1 demo song, 1 sample and 1 featurette at my blog. ;-)

As an avid fan of Jónsi and Sigur Rós, you have no idea how hard I am pushing/hoping for a nomination for Sticks and Stones. GAHHHH!!! If it's able to push through to a nomination, that'll be the day for me...but knowing how much of a crapshoot that the Original Song category tends to be, I'm holding my breath for now.

I was sad though, I saw Jónsi's live concert in NYC back in May...but he didn't perform Sticks and Stones. *Sadface*

But! Nonetheless, Jónsi for Sticks and Stones for Original Song! Woot!

NATHANIEL R said...

Vivi -- really? I can't figure out IF I RISE. Something is missing for me.

Ryan -- i have largely given up hoping for people that i specifically like to win these nominations (like Jonsi) because of how Oscar doesn't care to let them perform their own numbers. argh.

Leehee -- they wouldn't have let her sing it anyway. Boo.

andrew r -- i was wondering that myself.

marsha & 3rtfull -- you're probably right but still. i hated the way that whole thing went down. she had a good run at least. the 80s and early 90s were fun for/with her.

Jason H. said...

I second what Andrew R. said. Where the hell are the Scott Pilgrim songs? I guess they weren't to the Academy's tastes?

Jorge Rodrigues said...

I agree with all you who remembered SCOTT PILGRIM and other TANGLED songs.

How on Earth did the Academy deem "Mother Knows Best" and the PILGRIM songs ineligible and then crap like Bieber, Pharell Williams and Colbie Caillat gets a nomination?

I can't understand.

After hearing almost all of them, I don't know but I feel the appeal is too strong to deny musicians Legend or Chris Martin a win, or a overdue win for Diane Warren.

Since Newman already won... I can't see him do that again this year (sidenote: for as much as I love "Colors of the Wind", how is it a better song than "Dead Man Walking" or "You've Got a Friend in Me"?)

JoFo said...

Here's hoping at least two Burlesque songs get in, and Nothing by Janet Jackson is wonderful as is Sticks and Stones.

Even though theyd never get nominated, why weren't the songs from Get Him To The Greek eligible? They were hilarious.

"You Haven't Seen The Last of Me"

Just the ballad that everyone was dying for! Cher needed a big ass song and that was it.

"I See The Light"

I swooned like crazy when i heard this during the beautiful lantern scene. I love how Mandy Moore pretty much sounds like Belle and Ariel all in one and i was surprised by how dreamy Zachary Levi sounded.

Those are my top songs and i love them soooo much.

Nathaniel I. LOVE. YOU. for posting these links. Original song, hands down one of my fave categories (I just like the idea that favourite popstars/songwriters have the chance of being Oscared - and also it seems the easiest way to nab an Oscar - hello, just contribute some lyrics to a song on a buzzed-about film!...)

I have 4 definites for my shortlist (I know few of them, if any, have actual shots at Oscar - because that branch generally has bad taste - I'm reconciled with the fact that Randy Newman will probably win his forty-fucking-fourth statue...).

"Better Days", Eddie Vedder, EAT PRAY LOVE
"Bound to You", Christina Aguilera, Samuel Dixon, Sia Furler, BURLESQUE
"Me and Tennessee", Chris Martin, COUNTRY STRONG
"Sticks & Stones", Jon Thor Birgisson, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON

And battling out for that fifth slot:

"Alice", Avril Lavigne, ALICE IN WONDERLAND
"Despicable Me", Pharrell Williams, DESPICABLE ME
"Eclipse (All Yours), Emily Haines, James Shaw, Howard Shore, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE
"If I Rise", A R Rahman, Dido Armstrong, Rollo Armstrong, 127 HOURS
"If You Run", Adam Harrison, Piers Hewitt, Todd Howe, Nathan Nicholson, GOING THE DISTANCE
"To the Sky", Adam Young, LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA'HOOLE

“Rise” — http://www.youtube.com/3BillionAndCounting — is a beautiful
song. It is a song of Reality. It is a song which stirs the heart, one
inspired by Love and a deep sense of compassion for the suffering of
others.

It’s time that songs like this get nominated, because they can make a
difference to the whole world. The movie “3 Billion And Counting”, to
which “Rise” is the theme, has the potential to bring an end to the
needless tragedy of malaria. At any time, 500 million people suffer
from this debilitating disease, and 3000 kids in Africa die every day
— yet a simple, cheap solution to the problem is available.

We have to cherish and give recognition and appreciation to artists
and their work aimed at service to mankind, aimed at creating change

in people’s lives. True art has the power to transform and change
people and events. It is alive. It does not stay confined to theatres,
cinemas or recording studios.

“Rise” stands out as a song of change. We as an audience do not want
any more sugar — we want Fire. And this song is full of it — full of
passion and compassion. a call to Wake up to Love.
