ONE QUESTION for NAT:
IF, AFTER HAVING SEEN THESE 3, YOU COULD HAVE GONE BACK AND CHOSEN THE SEQUENCE SO THAT YOU'D HAVE UNWITTINGLY ENDED UP WITH THE GREATEST VIEWING PLEASURE, WHAT WOULD THAT SEQUENCE BE?

p.s. I agree with the score, it drowned out a lot of the scenes. I personally thought Shannon is the best part of the movie?
I personally thought the movie in its entirety was rather ho-hum. Or perhaps I just wasn't too fond of the story. It put the 'drama' in 'overdramatic'.
one q- is kate better than meryl or will we see a brit win best actress s - thmas/hawkins,is she this years oscar winner and is penn really a threat for the win.
"Lively acting"?? Hee hee... Nathaniel. That sounds like a gentlemanly way of saying "chewing scenery".
Though I am reading into that with my own bias b/c I think that trailer looks horrendous.
Road To Perdition was overscored, so not surprised there...
Best Picture worthy?
Too bad. I hate overscored films. I think the score made "Notes on a scandal" terrible. It can destroy the whole movie.
I hope that Kate and Leo are good enough to make it up.
I reckon there's only one way to score a film like NOTES ON A SCANDAL, and that's the way it was scored.
Whether the mixer needed to lower the volume on it from time to time however... wouldn't have been a bad idea.

I don't know if there is a point in asking anything since you will probably write a review soon but anyway. Are Kate's chances stronger ore weaker now you've seen the film?

I think Kate would win the Oscar for this for sure (it being her 'reward her already!' type of year) if not for the weird situation she's in with The Reader. so who knows...
But yeah, I could see Leo & her both winning.
I'm going to be extra-cautious this year. If I get hit by a bus or fall down a well before Kate wins her Oscar, Imma be SO PISSED.

OFF-TOPIC: I've heard that Maggie Cheung is taking a break off her retirement to feature in QT's Inglorious Bastards (yes, I insist on spelling it this way). Any thoughts on that?
Helena i don't necessarily think that winning Oscars and great performances go hand in hand ;)
that said, I think i loved their performances but you know... i'm being cautious this year about grading and saying things too quickly because I've been burned before by movies that were HYPEDHYPEDHYPED and then you see them all at once adn you have these weird reactions and than 2 weeks later you only like them.
i HATE the December glut.

Well, I don't think that possibility of Kate & Leo both getting Oscars has that much to do with excellence of their performances. I haven't seen Revolutionary Road but I do think they can win for other reasons.
First of all, it would be hell of a fun to see one of the most famous onscreen couple from the loudest movie ever both getting Oscars the same day, eleven years after "Titanic"'s eleven Oscars. What's more, it would be the THIRD time they are nominated the same year: see 2005 (Aviator and Eternal Sunshine) and 2007 (The Dep... well, Blood Diamond and Little Children).
Secondly, both are Oscarless with a few nominations and with already Oscared Meryl Streep and Sean Penn, who might be considered better by the Academy members themselves, it could be a "reward them already" type of award Nathaniel mentioned.
And finally, if there is some love for the cast of "Doubt", I think it will be much more difficult to resist honouring Viola Davis than Meryl Streep, thus I think Kate's chances are much better in the leading category.

I agree with you Nathaniel. Receiving the oscar doesn't necessarily go hand-in-hand with the best performance of the year. They are way overdo and they may win by default. And as Howler says, the stars sure would be aligned.
On the other hand, maybe there will be a horse race between Meryl and Kate, and Kristin Scott Thomas will pull an Adrian Brody and sweep in there for the upset...
2 kate performances in one year-it's a blessing and a curse.
i haven't seen either film yet (dammit) but, having read both books, hanna in THE READER is by far the better character. if both films weren't being released in the same year i would say hands down, without question, she would be going home with an oscar for it. why, harvey, why couldn't you just wait to release THE READER?
but it doesn't matter which film she wins for, i just want to see a bronzed naked man in her arms...i mean an oscar, not patrick wilson in LITTLE CHILDREN. although i wouldn't mind taking a look at that again...
Just watched the trailer for the new movie Revolutionary Road, and it looks like it should be pretty cool. I've been a huge fan of director Sam Mendes for some time now, and it's good to see Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio share the screen again! Please? Pretty please?!
A case can be made though. It wouldn't be awful category fraud. We've seen much worse. Hanna is the supporting character in the novel. Not sure if it's the same way on screen.

how is she supporting?
Every single synopsis is about her and the man obsesses on her for decades... (and he's played by two different people while she ages through it)
hanna is the female lead but the story is michael's. it is told through his eyes. her part when she is older is very small in the book. i would compare it to rachel weisz in THE CONSTANT GARDNER. she is the female lead, but we see her through him like a memory. a case could be made either way, but we'll just have to wait for the film when it comes out. (although, everyone knows the only reason its going supporting is so that she doesn't compete with herself for lead actress.)
um, on another note, why is it when i type in THE READER at imdb the voice of lisa simpson, yeardley smith, is the first thing that pops up. random...

i agree it is not category fraud,the book is through the boy's eyes and she is the catalyst of sorts the movie won't be about her but of the boys memories of her,when i read the book i never thought it was a book about hanna at all.
90% of movies are overscored. It's cheap emotional manipulation. One of the worst trends in modern cinema. Still, I look forward to the movie.
Any idea of how closely it follows the book? I'm seventy pages into it.
I was really unimpressed by the trailer. I'll rarely say this about dramas, but it looks boring. And that's too bad, but Kate deserves her credit already!
Kate is heading towards her golden decade... she's hot, young and the most talented of them all. I hope she'll end up with two Oscar nominations this year. I loved the book so I want her to win for the Reader!
ariella -- i think it's fairly faithful but i haven't read it -- this is just based on things people have told me about the book, although i do know that the movie jettisons some of the peripheral stuff to focus on the Wheelers.
