Protest Tonight!

If you're in the NYC area there's a peaceful Prop 8 protest tonight (6:30 PM) by the Mormon temple on 65th and Columbus. Thousands of equality minded people --gay, straight and other are expected to attend. Mormons will undoubtedly continue to spend their tax-exempt money to further their cause of legalizing discrimination but the truth is that more and more people are waking up to the hypocrisy of government sanctioned discrimination against its own citizens. It's all a matter of time. Here's Drew Barrymore and Keith Ulbermann fighting the good fight.

I love goodhearted celebrities (Drew) and random kind gestures (Keith). I could eat them up with a spoon. yum-yum.

UPDATE: Towleroad has a thank you to everyone who showed last night. It was pretty great (if short). Here's a list of upcoming protests. And a more mainstream overview of the situation from ABC News -- I get so frustrated at how lazy journalists are. Nobody ever asks follow up question. I understand that the typical Mormon defense against polygamy 'that was a long time ago. we don't do that anymore' is probably often part of just your garden variety press release package / statement and not pulled from an actual interview but shouldn't there be some responsibility on the part of the press to question statements which are misleading by nature, rather than just printing them? FACT: Mormon theology still supports polygamy. The belief is not past-tense, they just don't practice it right now. Why do people accept these evasions from this political lobbying group?

You will see me there. Seriously, how retarded is it that in 2008, men (and women, duh) are still not considered as all created equally?

Don’t forget James Franco, Wanda Sykes and Rose McGowan have also been fighting for us on the front lines.

Wow. Amazing speech by Keith Ulbermann. Who is he? Is he always this awesome.

I wish I could be there for this. But at least I'm here in Canada, setting a good example.

eat keith olberman up with a spoon? yuck. very hateful / nasty guy. i worked with him at wcvb-tv in boston - treated virtually everyone like crap.

You know your career is in the shitter when you're reduced to protest with the gays.

They couldn't give her a part in that Nine project ?

Olberman is the left's version of a Fox News Anchor. Yuck.

well Keith can be a blowhard at times yes. But i think it's cool that he did this. at least his heart is in the right place.

it's weird to post this and hear insults at two people going out of their way for other people though.

to each their own.

Nathaniel, I was just going to say the same thing.

Clooney is also protesting Prop 8.

How awesome was it?!!?!?! Great turn out, no? Anyone going on Saturday?

Drew is delish, and her stock just soared again in my eyes.

Olberman on the other hand -- yeah, he's not "good-hearted" by any stretch of the imagination, present gesture excepted. Cynically hedged, per usual.

NATHANIEL R said...

dom --yeah the turnout was even better than i expected. thousands of people. yay.

clusterfunk --you may have a point about olbermann. I got caught up in the moment and usually his bluster does annoy. BUT I appreciate the gesture nonetheless

at any rate. it's depressing to see the 'blame the victim' mentality i'm starting to see elsewhere.

i wish people were more evolved.

ah well. slowly but surely. Perhaps with a president who isn't knee jerk divisive we'll start to have people trying to understand each other again.

It seems to me that all the focus on so-and-so's personality evades focus on the central point being made and the eloquence (in Olbermann's case) with which it is being made.

Sound familiar?

Keith is stupid and discussing! Has no heart and will never work even if tries so bad...

NATHANIEL R said...

janice --yes very familiar. I honestly had no idea that people would want to attack famous people who spoke for gays. I figured it was kind of a gay friendly audience here.

i mean i'm glad to get all types but still...

and again. i understand why people don't like Keith (there are nights when i get sick of his vitriol... and he is basically a left wing version of the blowhards on the right) but at least his morals are in the right place. It's not like he's fighting for racism, sexism, homophobia and any of the number of unfortunate things his right wing counterparts stand up for when they get vitriolic.

so what Janice said: let's focus on message and not on delivery.

dude are you kidding me? I love my gay friends but I hate Keith... this doesn't make me a bad person. Also supporting civil unions for homosexuals doesn't make us evil too.

By the way, you rock and your blog is freaking awesome... the only blog I check.

Nat,

Robb, Armina, Lisa and I went to the protest/rally in Detroit on Saturday. We had miserable weather hence a poor turn out. But it was great to be there nonetheless.
