hey, didn't i just mention this? did you have it planned all along? i'm very impatient when it comes to my kate... and the answer to your question is: yes, yes, dear oscar gods, HELL YES!!! ('i mean the whole world is thinking, when is it winslet's time?')
OMG! What an incredibly gorgeous picture. She really deserve to get an Oscar. To make up for all the times she didnt get one she should get four at once;)
quote of the day: “Everyone can commit to 20 minutes, especially if there’s a glass of Chardonnay afterwards.”-winslet on working out. (hmm, is anyone else thinking winslet work-out video?)
I love this trend of Vanity Fair! Last month was Amy Adams reminiscing Rita Hayworth in Gilda. This month Kate does something similar playing La Deneuve in Belle De Jour!
When I read some of her answers I thought, "God, she's so honest". Not that I had a different opinion before. And what she says about acne. She didn't have to say that. No one could ever find out. But she just knows what is important and what is not. She likes being beautiful but she doesn't need to be seen as divine or anything. (Not very sussessful in doing that though :p)
She knows she is an ordinary person at heart and enjoys doing her job brilliantly without feeling superior. I hope she gives the best performance of the year (be it lead or supporting, though I prefer I think The Reader role) and gets the Oscar. In any case, I hope she will continue giving those lovely performances of hers for many years to come.
To avoid ending up like Weaver and Moore (among others) who fell victem to vote splitting, I think the precursors will be key, especially the Golden Globe.
...becasure she WILL be nominated for both. THE READER is just way too baity (WWII, accent, tragic, etc).
In my own (imaginary) world there's a line of actresses, like those red carpet rendezvous, but more in a line position with all of them waiting for their turn to receive their (overdue) oscars. They all look better than ever in their glamorous dresses, chat among themselves, take their oscars, give their speeches and go back to their daily lives, happy and satisfied.
She truly is a goddess and the most talented of her generation (waaay better than the overly technical Blanchett). She should be a double winner (Sense & Sensibility, Eternal Sunshine)! - Sean C.
For all of the academy's previous mistakes she should be compensated. two oscars in one night is her compensation has this ever happened for acting nominations??
billy no, it's never happened for actors. the closest thing that's happened to that is those two-years-in-a-row winners (luise rainer, tom hanks, jason robards, katharine hepburn, spencer tracy)
iggy thank you. nobody should be as pissed as Pfeiffer... and all because of the academy's super annoying obsession with driving miss daisy. Not that Pfeiffer is crying about.
I love Meryl, don't get me wrong, but 1) She already is an Oscar winner. Once you've won one Oscar, you are forever an "Academy Award winner". Does Meryl really need more? I don't know, but her fans do apparently. Meryl is already snugly and firmly in the Pantheon for all eternity, it's not like she has anything to prove. (then again I suppose the same could be said of Kate, in terms of acting greatness. Just give her the damn Oscar, please, and we can all go home happy.)
2) That Doubt trailer looked a little too baity, too "trying hard to be important and get Oscars" and Meryl looked a bit "old school Meryl" in it (hide behind disguises, etc.) Then again, getting ugly seems to be a requirement lately for winning Best Actress (unless you're Reese Witherspoon).
it's a given, Kate is fabulous and one day will win...in fact, whe'll end up with at least two at some point. Looks like this is the start of her campaign. Look how long Paul Newman, Shirley Maclaine, etc had to wait to win. In terms of who is "due" - Meryl has gone 25 years without winning. She has just one lead actress award. She basically has 13 or 14 Lead Actress nominations with just one win. She sits there year after year - loses to Cher, Helen Mirren, Geraldine Page, Kathy Bates, virtually everyone. This has to be her year. She's de-glammed, it's anti-Catholic (Hollywood loves that), lots of baity clips ("Buck never would have been in the hospital!"). So come on, give Meryl oscar #2 - then let's move on. She doesn't have much on the horizon after that - except Julia Child. And Amelia Aerhart def beats Julia Child in 2009.
She is overdue for a third Oscar because she has given in the last 26 years ( since her last win)some of the best performances ever and has been overlooked, in some cases, because everyone takes her for granted as the greatest actress ever. They need to put their money where their mouts are.
It's when you have double Best Actress Ocsar Winner Hilary Swank that you realise the balance needs readdressing by giving Streep another in that category. Seriously, Swank?! Urgh.
Then again, 5 time "loser" Winslet isn't right either. Time for a tie, we haven't had one in ages....
As a matter of fact - I love her, she's a goddes and my favourite actress, but I don't want her to win for anything which is not fascinating and not only amazing. I need her to be remembered as one of the best winners ever. And I don't think I'll be happy seeing Heath Ledger winning, because with this win he might be eternally forgotten as Ennis del Mar. I was horrified to see a film critic wondering how on earth an actor who was able to deliver such a tremendous performance could play in "some gay cowboy movie".
howler -- don't worry about Ledger's legacy. 50 years from now that Brokeback mountain performance will still stand the test of time. There will be 19 more Batman movies by then. It's important to think outside the "now" and this year all anybody cares about is Batman.
and that "critic" isn't a very good one if they didn't already know that Ledger was a fantastic actor, you know?
I am not sure how it is determined... the last tie was for Best Actress when Katherine Hepburn won for The Lion in Winter and Barbra Streisand won for Funny Girl ...

Is that la Stone? I wouldn't know that was Winslet if you hadn't told me.

Kate for president!

If Streep doesn't' win ... then I am all for Kate!!!!

I don't understand why she keeps pretending to not notice my telepathic marriage proposals.
Wow...that doesn't even look like her, but she looks wonderful all the same!
hot hot hot
it is HER year everything has come together in 2008 finally in the right films at the right time, she is 2008's best actress forget meryl kate is it.
I almost died when I first saw this. Damn she looks fine!
A lead statue would be nice, but I don't care just as long as she wins this year. After all...
...ITS HER TURN!
It's comforting knowing that Kate swears like a trucker.
To avoid ending up like Weaver and Moore (among others) who fell victem to vote splitting, I think the precursors will be key, especially the Golden Globe.

The first one in the line is Pfeiffer.
Iggy
Yeah i'm nerveous about de possible vote-split.
This reminds me of another mag cover in Nov. 2002 featuring Julianne Moore and declaring her "two chances at Oscar".
And we all know how that went.
hell yeah! but uhm not before the God Meryl Streep wins her third if she is great in Doubt as we all know she would be
Top 5 Ladies Most Overdue for Oscar Glory:
01.) Kate Winslet
02.) Michelle Pfeiffer
03.) Sigourney Weaver
04.) Glenn Close
05.) Julianne Moore
re: glenn
LOL!
How about a double-fisted evening for Kate on Feb 22, 2009 ?!?!?
Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
Can you imagine ?
I will accept nothing less.
She truly is a goddess and the most talented of her generation (waaay better than the overly technical Blanchett). She should be a double winner (Sense & Sensibility, Eternal Sunshine)!
- Sean C.
For all of the academy's previous mistakes she should be compensated.
two oscars in one night is her compensation
has this ever happened for acting nominations??
I cannot recall a double win in the acting categories for the same film year.
The mere thought of it makes me truly giddy !!
billy no, it's never happened for actors.

but for the fans!
I just hope it's either Kate or Meryl that wins. If I try and get more picky than that, I'm just gonna end up disappointed.
I just hope this isn't like the year Swank crashed the Staunton/Bening party. Oh wait, Kate deserved it that year, too! Grrr...
Yes! Kate for President! Can we have a british woman as president? That's hot!

That's telling 'em! Get that Oscar Kate!

That's it! I'm making a movie to win an Oscar so I can cast my vote for the awesome and lovely Kate as the next Best Actress Oscar winner!
I must get to work.
Hey! Comment du Jour!! ;)
Iggy
I hope Streep wins in BA category for Doubt....
and Kate wins for The Reader in BSA category!!!!
Meryl already has two oscars, I find it strange how people complain that she's overdue for a third.
I really hope Kate wins this year.
She is overdue for a third Oscar because she has given in the last 26 years ( since her last win)some of the best performances ever and has been overlooked, in some cases, because everyone takes her for granted as the greatest actress ever. They need to put their money where their mouts are.

Chad
keep in mind - streep has been a 10-11-12 time "loser".
As a matter of fact - I love her, she's a goddes and my favourite actress, but I don't want her to win for anything which is not fascinating and not only amazing. I need her to be remembered as one of the best winners ever.

Howler
The rules of the Academy do not allow ties anymore.... only the Globes and some other critics' awards can have two winners.
How is it determined who receives the Oscar in the event there is a tie after the ballots are tabulated ?
Just curious ..........

To Billy Held the Oscar:
I am not sure how it is determined... the last tie was for Best Actress when Katherine Hepburn won for The Lion in Winter and Barbra Streisand won for Funny Girl ...
Perhaps the Vice-President gets to cast the tie-breaking vote?
Kidding.
I love Kate. We share the same birthday. I think she should have won for "Sense and Sensilbility."
I am so sick of that overrated tramp and all her besotted fangeeks.
