this is one streep performnce i don't love,not in my 1990 top 5 i find her sometimes a bit acty i can see what she is doing trying hard for laughs,like in marvin's room she doesn't live or get the role.
There are actually parts of this performance that bother me a bit... some of Streep's comedy does seem a tad "actorish" like she's trying a bit too hard for the laughs. But I can forgive it, since I love 90% of the performance so much. Streep's songs here, especially, are pure gold. I still say she deserved that globe over Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, but now that Streep's finally won that category, I'm not as mad about that.
on no she didn't deserve the globe roberts was star making in that role and i stand by the nom, streep should have been left off oscar roster and susan sarandon or shoulda been there instead,it was a default nom or it was a nom for doing something different but not quite perfecting it.
I agree that it is one of Streep's best .. the thing is she has tried every different kind of role and succeeds fairly well ... to me that is an actress .. most do the same variation of the same role ALL the time... even if it is good, it is not a stretch, and that's what I like about Streep.
My fav movies of streep's;
Sophie's Choice, Cry In the Dark, Plenty, Adaptation, The Hours.
One I did not care for was The French Lieutenant's Woman.
That may be "minor" Streep, but "minor" Streep is still masterful compared to almost everyone else. And it paved the way for possibilities she explored later - funnier, looser, sort of the predecessor to roles in Prairie Home Companion and such.
The brief appearance of Annette Bening is a highlight of the movie for me. She is hilarious! and she looks so young! And Meryl singing You don't know me breaks my heart.

"Relax. They're blanks. Asshole!"
Thank you for that, Nate. I love that movie more than strawberries. And that says a lot.
So what am I supposed to do? Go to some halfway house for wayward SAG members?
Tee-hee...
what movie is this from?

Well, I see the over-acting parts as being entirely in character. She got it from her mother (Shirley MacLaine I mean, not her real life mother).

bah on all the doubters. This is one of Streep's very best performances. Though my choice for best of the year was Anjelica Huston in The Grifters
agree. this was one of meryl's finest
funny, sad, confused, angry, listless and v smart
Kathy Bates ruled that year with "Misery".
