I assure you that it's not a complaint. It's more like a question mark. It's just that I don't really understand the benefit of the annual studio dog piling, everyone leaping on critics and guild members and Oscar voters all at once, rubbing their legs frantically like desperate horny beasts. Why is everything ambitious,prestigious and golden also simultaneous? It's very strange.You see, today I'm still thinking about Meryl Streep as a bitter nun "Look at that. You blew out my light!" (Did I underestimate her work? Maybe. Were my expectations too high for 'the greatest actress of all time'? Probably. I already want to see it again) Meanwhile I'm trying not to think about those stupid vampires who stare at each other and us for hours upon hours and never think to do anything else. You're a vampire, idiot, kill something, drink blood, scare me. Meryl Streep is way scarier than you are. Do SOMETHING already! Anything... I'm begging you. Now I must leave both nuns and the undead behind.
I fear that all Oscar hopefuls will blur together. I won't be able to tell one film from the next -- it'll be just like a bleary eyed film festival only more middlebrow. By Thanksgiving I'll be imagining Harvey Milk sweeping prissy Nicole Kidman off her feet even as she ages backwards -- younger and younger she gets, all the way back to her shadowy past in Nazi era Germany when she fought Daniel Craig in the Belarus forest before her unhappy marriage to Leonardo DiCaprio (of Connecticut), a union which ended with his historic downfall by way of a 1970s television interview.

First, you are absolutely right when you expect a superb perf by Meryl in a role like this. Being "just" good is not satisfying enough considering what she can do.
Second, I don't get it. The movies you will attend are 3 but you made more references than 3. So, which are the movies?

PS. Is Nicole's shadowy Nazi-era past the same part where she's an SS guard by day, but by night, becomes a smokin' nipple-pierced pole-dancer, while being sweetly courted by a broken-down wrestler played by Ralph Fiennes? Kind of a "Cabaret" update, with a song score by Bruce Springsteen.
Or maybe I'm thinking of something else.

I think if you saw Doubt again, you'd re-evaluate your initial review on Streep's performance. I've been thinking about it a lot and the subtly and brilliant simplicity of Sister Aloysius was extraordinary.
Think about it, the tiny nuances between her and each character in the film were completely different. She was tough but always with a slight skepticism (or, uh, doubt...?)
Although I love Kate Winslet, her performance in RR is a little TOO showy and melodramatic.
Then again, it worked for Halle Berry....

i actually think she was extremely brave to play sister aloysius that way. she finds the inner goodness/humour; however flawed of every character she portrays.
that is something no other actress has so consistently avhieved
i would go so far as to say that this performance will once again shift the nexus of female acting; much like sophie altered it 25 years ago

Oh, and I totally second txt critic’s jealousy… that “murder-skin-wearing” line is priceless.
Expect to be murdered in the next few hours because it's not only txt critic who wants to do it. Last time I was so jealous at the age of six when my older brother got a big, bear-shaped chocolate ice cream and I didn't because I was sick. However I might reconsider killing you if you are going to inform us immediately how gay "Milk" is, whether Kate is going to get Oscar for this one or "The Reader" (because she's getting it obviously this year), and obviously, is Australia as spectacular, spectacular as we expect.

I hope you do re-evaluate Streep's performance... the second time around, try to forget Jones in the role, and I do believe you will see exactly what blogger E dot says. He and I have the same take on her performance and probably more.

In all seriousness, I'm pretty jealous. Sure, I probably wouldn't want to sit through three films in a row, but I haven't gotten to see a whole lot of the contenders yet. Such is the benefit of living in the 'burbs. :/
anon -- now you're all drinking the Streep Koolaid. I agree that Streep-flavored Koolaid tastes yummy but Doubt will not alter the course of screen acting. Streep has been better before even if she's also great here (I'll see again to reevaluate) That said: everyone is really good in the movie so it's definitely enjoyable as an acting exercize.
update: i'm also fond of Kate in Rev Road and I don't think she was too showy at all.

Why is anyone expecting Streep to ever top Sophie's Choice?? Or Silkwood? Streep was the best actress EVER in her prime, and she's still the best actress ever, but expecting her keep breaking her own records is a bit too high a standard for my taste. I mean, come on. She's still doing all-time great work, too: Prada, Angels in America, etc. I guess it's not enough since that work is not the kind of stuff oscar is willing or able to reward.
I think people just have to accept the fact that Sophie will always be THE Streep performance, and her next oscar will be a career reward (but technically given for a very good performance that happened to be oscarish and arrive in a year where there was an opening for the win... that may or may not be this year).
Sorry, I just had to rant. Let's just savor this year, people. Streep, Winslet, or maybe Blanchett will finally win best actress. All will be in the running, along with other very good overdue actresses, with no Swank M$B spoiler in sight (god forbid Kate Beckinsale gets traction... shudders).
I'll be happy no matter where the oscar goes, as long as it's to one of these presumed goddess frontrunners.
