Year in Review: Underseen & Underappreciated.

We kick things off with Junebug.
You're probably scratching your head. 'Junebug was acclaimed. Junebug was a modest indie success. ' etc... But my point is this: Amy Adams aside, when was the last time you heard someone rave about the film itself? It happens like this sometimes: A movie arrives, people (myself included) don't know quite what to make of it at first, but one particular aspect --usually the most accessible and/or loudest element is elevated to "best in show" and develops its own spin-off fandom. (Read the rest. See the other 3 selections. And answer my question about 2046)

The same (with 2046) could be said about last year's A Very Long Engagement. With Amelie being one of the most popular movies of the last decade, it's odd that the same combo couldn't entire more than $4.5mil worth of customers.

It's not like it wasn't great, either.

love seeing Happy Endings there. One of my favorites of the year, if only for Kudrow and Gyllenhaal's performances.

Biggest crime of the year is the ommission of Gyllenhaal's songs from the Best Song race. Brokeback Mountain got a lot of publicity here - and not without good reason, the song score in the film is excellent. For my money, though, nothing tops Maggie's soulful crooning in the restaurant.

Great to see In Her Shoes and The White Countess on here.

Because I live in the middle of someplace-like-nowhere, 2046 came nowhere near me, so I wasn't able to add to its box office. But I'm excited to see it now. And as for Junebug? It's one of the only movies I made it to in the theater last fall, because you guys all raved about it so much, and from the first hollerin' scene to the last time Embeth stroked Alessandro's hair (lucky girl), I was in love with the whole thing. I will be happy to rave on about the movie itself, if you want me to, even though I don't have a lot of critical clout, you know.
