Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin to Host the Oscars

Well, that drama was shortlived. I rather like the idea of two very funny men, who've already worked together, hosting the Oscars. It does set up a rather unusual circumstance for the big night, though. It's not often that the the movie industry's biggest night feels like one movie is sponsoring the show in which they aren't allowed to advertise. But this year one movie essentially will.

Meryl Streep has to choose between Steve and Alec in It's Complicated. But Oscar doesn't have to choose. He'll take both men. And Meryl too, possibly... if it would like to renew those vows it made back in 1982.

I approve of this, completely!

Great choice! Does this mean It's Complicated might have a chance?

I know it seems like a giant promo for "It's Complicated" but even if they weren't both starring in that, I think their pairing would still make sense, given their history as SNL hosts. I'd still rather have Meryl or just Baldwin (Martin's done it before several times) but I think this should be a fun ceremony with those two.

maybe this is the forerunner to that meryl presents best picture idea you started..?

This is: 1) an implicit critique on the thankless nature of the romantic leading men's roles in Nancy Meyer's movies, i.e. Baldwin and Martin aren't even nomination-contenders; 2) a big boost for It's Complicated; 3) a bigger boost for Meryl, if she gets nominated for Julie & Julia, atop all the other perks of that role (biopic, movie-stealing, representative of decade's work); 4) just as good a boost for Meryl, if she gets nominated for It's Complicated instead as Guy Lodge is predicting; 5) not to mention they're sure to make jokes with Meryl/at Meryl's expense, which you can count on to be a blast.

In my opinion....THIS IS GOING TO BE FREAKING AMAZING!!!

Oh and that poster is lush!

You know, I really hope Meryl wins for Julie & Julia. Like I've said before, I do think it's one of her very best. And as great Carey Mulligan, Gabourey Sidibe and Abbie Cornish are in their films, I couldn't choose between them - and, crucially, couldn't envisage any of them as Oscar winners quite yet. It just feels right for Meryl to take it this year.

...Plus how great would it be if Meryl were to present Best Director or Picture right after winning Best Actress?! She would totally milk that moment, in the best way possible of course!

Does anyone not like this? When was the last time Steve Martin was funny? In cheaper by the dozen? The Pink Panther? I don't think so. I never really cared for Alec Baldwin. Never really made me laugh before and I'm not a fan of 30 Rock. Now, I wish Meryl gets involved considering they're all in the same film.

It'll be more like an advertisement for the DVD since by the time the show comes around It's Complicated will probably be already out on DVD!

I'm not the biggest fan of post-30 Rock Baldwin (not that pre-30 Rock Baldwin was anything of merit), but Martin is a definite win and was my #1 choice after Jackman.

I can't wait for the inevitable Meryl skit.

By the way, guys, you can't judge these two purely on the basis of their movie acting work. Just take a look at this early ET interview on the set of It's Complicated: great chemistry, hilarious improv.

Last time Steve Martin was funny? Last year's Oscars.

This comes off like they think Steve Martin needs help with the hosting duties, and he so doesn't. He should have been given the job solo. Alec Baldwin? Meh. Hour after hour of his above-the-room smugness. Oh well. At least it'll be a fun night for Meryl.

I'm sure it will make for a fun night (I suppose?) - am I the only one here who was sort of hoping to see Mr Jackman again? Oh well....

To be honest, I always get disappointed when the host is announced and it's not Billy Crystal, Ricky Gervais or a woman so this doesn't surprise me? But I'll give it a chance. The question is will they disappear for long periods of time like Hugh Jackman did?

NoNo i imagine so. and like Colin and Robert and others i'm excited to see Martin back.

Janice -- no, you're not the only one. i so hope he does it again.

I am so looking forward to Martin & Baldwin announcing the presenters for Best Original Screenplay (Streep & Fey). ;-)

If I weren't as pessimistic as I am I'd say this seems to be a good omen ;-). A very good omen for a certain someone to finally get what she deserves ;-)
