Cast This: Gravity (Without Angelina Jolie)

It occurred to me a few weeks ago that I'd never mentioned Alfonso Cuarón's upcoming sci-fi epic Gravity. And here's a worrisome opportunity to do so. According to CHUD Angelina Jolie has passed on the big budget project for a second time. That type of a "no" can often doom an expensive project.

Gravity sans Jolie. What will they do?

Who will Alfonso Cuarón find to handle the heavy duty film-carrying demands of the role? The film concerns a man and a woman who are stranded in a space station. Or at least the woman iss (details are kind of unclear) The rest of the crew is dead. Robert Downey Jr has the principal male role but for whatever reason, it's a supporting gig. Gravity will rest on the female lead's shoulders. Most exciting from a filmmaking perspective is not, for me, the abundant groundbreaking CGI (as much as in Avatar) but that Cuarón wants to include long unbroken shots... one of them 20 minutes long.

Long unbroken shots are just about my favorite cinematic thing in the world after actresses so I should have mentioned this project long ago. This movie gives both. And Cuarón's already given plenty just by making Y Tu Mama Tambien and Children of Men. (Speaking of unbroken shots...)

Anyway, this has got to be a tough role to cast... and not just because of bankability issues. Not every actor would understand the shift in performance style required to carry huge metaphysical but also action-tinged sci-fi epics all by their lonesomes. Who were the last actors to do so? I guess Jodie Foster (Contact), Hugh Jackman (The Fountain), and George Clooney (Solaris) have all given that a go in their respective ways. Carrying a survival epic on your own? Tom Hanks in Castaway pops into mind... though that's decidedly earthbound. But we'll allow for him since he's also got the stranded in space thing with Apollo 13. Obviously you have to have a star people love to look at if they have to spend 90-120 minutes with primarily one face.

I always find it amusing/annoying that when big roles for women that don't seem to require a specific age range are being cast, studios always seem willing to consider any currently hot A list star of any age and virtually every 20something in town with any heat that month even though there's usually no proven bankability (which is how so many people end up starring in like 10 movies simultaneously and are never heard from again. Remember Kate Bosworth?). Studios will almost never bank on someone who once had heat and lost it despite the cold hard fact that showbiz is nothing if not a random chaotic collection of people who are walking embodiments of the cyclical nature of heat.

"Interested" lists always make me realize how rare and lucky we are as moviegoers when something accidental happens like when someone gives someone great a real shot even though they aren't perceived as "hot right now" or bankable or on every shortlist in town. Like Marisa Tomei in all of her Oscar nominated roles. She was never on the top of every list but she's so damn talented and reliably watchable. Or like Susan Sarandon in Bull Durham in '88. She had to fight to get that and then was magnificent obliterating any notions that she had already peaked. Many people even thought Streep was over in the early 90s, you know?

Who would you cast? Bear in mind we know virtually nothing about the role other than that it's a solo and the character has a daughter back on earth (so you can't skew as young as Ellen Page, or at least you probably shouldn't because why would someone leave a baby on Earth while they were space travelling?) They'll have to have chemistry with RDJ if he stays on, and they'll need to be comfortable in an effects heavy film (which is why I worry about the studio's interest in Natalie Portman. When exactly is she good in those situations even though she's often good elsewhere?). I'd be considering Gwyneth Paltrow first (I'm serious) and then probably Nicole Kidman. Hell, I'd even test Christina Ricci on account of the curveball aspect of it. There's a familiar interesting face that nobody would be expecting but that many people would enjoy and if she ever delivers big somewhere a million people are going to say "I knew she had it in her all along!". But as much as it surprises me to hear myself type it, the studio's rumored interest in Sandra Bullock makes total sense to me artistically even if they're probably only interested due to the monetary heat. Still, I can imagine her being a good match with RDJ and her uncomplicated but highly watchable acting style might actually be an assett to an effects heavy film. She's never tried one and maybe she'll want to stretch a little post-Oscar?

The possibilities are endless... aren't they?

I'll shut up now. I do go on. Your turn. Which actress would you love to see carrying a sci-fi epic for Alfonso Cuarón.

I kind of like the idea of Rosario Dawson here.

I surprised myself that the first name to pop up while I was reading this was Sandra Bullock, then of course I saw that you did think of her in the end as well. It makes sense.

But man what I would give to see someone like Michelle Yeoh in the role. Or hey, Lost is done, why not Yunjin Kim?

And she just popped into my head... Charlize Theron. Anyone?

Joe K -- ooh. see. it didn't even occur to me. but i see it. I see it.

Ryan T -- i almost included Charlize in the "why didn't their name come up" her career does seem to have inexplicably cooled.

michelle yeoh. i love her too. but that never took for some reason despite two big international hits (the bond film & crouching tiger)

I think Sandra Bullock could pull this off. There's the money factor, which will put her higher than most of the other women. Plus, she played a caring mother very well in The Blind Side. Whether or not she deserved her Oscar is a different story entirely *coughs* Gabby should have won!

The first person to pop into my head was Nicole Kidman. And I stopped there, because she'd be perfect. But we know it probably won't ever happen.

Morgan Leigh Davies said...

I think Paltrow and Kidman would both be potentially excellent choices -- they're some of the most watchable actress around as far as I'm concerned (although I know a lot of people wouldn't necessarily agree).

I also thought I had heard Rebecca Hall listed somewhere, although I might be making that up. She also seems like a great choice to me (she said, based on absolutely no knowledge of the role...), although as of now she's obviously much less well-known than some of the others on the list.

Jodie Foster.

Why is Blake Lively even being considered? Isn't she, like, 19?

This is wistful thinking, but I kind of wish Helen Mirren would get this. Since it's not age specific, why not?

Ah, whatever.

Funny how none of the names mentioned in the comments can sell a movie at the box office....Cuaron wanted Jolie. If I remember correctly, the screenwriter wrote the film with Jolie in mind for the part. I would rather they delay the film, so Jolie could do it.

I like the idea of Marion Cotillard, Rebecca Hall, or Zoe Saldana.

Although, someone suggested Noomi Rapace on another site which I think is a great idea.

Ashley Judd perhaps? Kerry Washington? Uma Thurman? Cotillard has done nothing for me, but she seems an interesting choice. Kidman would be the obvious choice for people like us, but she's box office poison. Right? Hmmn ... maybe my interest in her has cooled as she's massacred her face. I would like to think Sandra Bullock could do it. Maybe she could surprise. Stranger things have happened. I mean, she has had a lifetime of emotional shit happen to her in the last year that she has yet to use on the big screen ... whatever role she does choose to do next, I hope it's a good match for her.

I just don't find most of those possibilities (of the ones I recognize) that interesting, especially the actresses under 30. There just doesn't seem to be anyone besides Jolie that I could trust with a project like this.

I'm a Nicole Kidman fanatic so I'll watch her in anything, but for some reason the Gwyneth Paltrow suggestion sounds really good to me. Maybe it's just my affection for Great Expectations spilling over, but I could see her nailing this role. I remember when there were rumors buzzing about ScarJo and Blake Lively being the top contenders and it just didn't make much sense to me.

I'm loving Joe K.'s suggestion though, it's about time Rosario Dawson had a really great role. Theron and Bullock are also very nice choices though this may be a little too familiar with Theron in the lead, I'd love for her to do something lighter.

Again more names being mentioned that can't sell movies at the box office with their name alone.

I love the suggestions of Marion Cotillard, Ashley Judd and Kerry Washington. I was thinking Kate Winslet but it just seemed so obvious, maybe Rachel Weisz would be a good fit? Elizabeth Banks, perhaps? Okay now I'm just throwing out names!

LOL! Is everyone just naming their favourite actresses??

The first thing that came into my mind was Charlize, since The Tourist was supposed to be hers, this would be a great trade off. I like everyone's suggestions here.

BUT...speaking of Cuaron, can Maribel Verdu speak a believable 'I'm not born in the States but I've been here long enough' English? Because after Y Tu Mama Tabien, I don't understand why she hasn't been used in a Hollywood movie.

Kerry Washington was my first thought.

Viola Davis was working the @#$% out of that spaceship in Solaris, and Meryl did ask Hollywood to hand her a movie. Do what Meryl says.

Angela Bassett loves genre, and tried to go somewhere like this in the benighted Supernova, but she'll be perceived as too old.

Vera Farmiga, Rachel Weisz, and Marion Cotillard are all excellent choices.

Walter L. Hollmann said...

I love the Bullock idea, actually. Uma Thurman, of course. But the first name I thought was Zoe Saldana, who I adore, possesses charm, has great physicality, and at 32 is young and hot while still capable of having a child back home.

NicksFlickPicks said...

...and of course the so-far-unnamed Julianne Moore. Who already gets on with Alfonso.

I love that you've included Naomi Watts. She was the best thing in King Kong and I think she will be great in this role.

Also, someone mentioned Uma Thurman. It's about damn time she has her kick-ass comeback.

1) Zoe Saldana (even if I think she could be tired of sci-fi epics)
2) Sandra Bullock
3) Uma Thurman
4) Nicole Kidman
5) Elizabeth Mitchell (wishful thinking...and after all if someone could propose Evangeline Lilly...)

So Stacie said...

Wow, when I was reading what this film was about, I could think of no better actress for the role than Nicole Kidman - she's never really done a sci-fi, and she loves to really stretch herself out across a broad range of genres - you only have to look at the next 3 films she has coming out as proof of that: Rabbit Hole (drama), Just Go With It (comedy) and Trespass (action). It'd also be a great opportunity to quash those ridiculous "box office poison" tags!

KEVIN M. said...

Julianne Moore! She's worked well with Cuaron before, and I can see her and RDJ being a powerful team.

The first person that came to mind was Naomi Watts but I love so many of these suggestions- Rosario Dawson, Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton, Michelle Yeoh, Vera Farmiga, Zoe Saldana... I 'd love if this was one of those times where there were two really similar projects coming out so we'd get twice as much Amazing Actress Alone in Space!

Burning Reels said...

Wow, this sounds like an exciting new project for Cuaron - I hope he gets that funding.

With that in mind, surely most rumoured names are immediately ruled out. I like the ideas of Kidman, Theron, Watts and Julianne.

Ms Kate Winslet?!

My odd suggestion would be Jennifer Garner. She does action very well and is better than Connelly, Rosario, hell even Sandra Bullock. And since Ben Affleck is reinventing his career why shouldn't she?

Danielhardy23@gmail.com said...

in an alternate universe where `bankability' was not the prime factor, maria bello would be my first choice. on a more realistic level, these ones could be good as well as get it financed:

vera farmiga
kate winslet
cate blanchett
charlize theron
naomi watts
and i suppose sandra bullock could break her career-long bad movie streak.

i just hope it doesn't get scrapped because angelina's the only `bankable' actress in hollywood.

Trudy said...

I say Naomi Watts or Gwyneth Paltrow.

Though, I still think that regardless of who the actress is, the possibility of this film actually doing well at the box office is a very long shot.

NATHANIEL R said...

anon -- if you leave it only to CAN SELL A MOVIE ON THEIR OWN ...and the studio isn't leaving it at that if they're considering Blake Lively and Naomi & ScarJo, clearly they're not that worried about box office pull ...

I find it funny that ScarJo is considered bankable by some. When she's great she's great and she can sure sell magazines but when has she ever sold a movie?

If you're going STRICTLY by bankability and selling a movie on your own you're left with only

WITHERSPOON, BULLOCK, ROBERTS, FOSTER (who rarely works) and JOLIE

and that's it basically.

The studio should trust that groundbreaking special effects, RDJ in support and a cool concept with a good actress should be able to sell it.

NATHANIEL R said...

I second third and fourth whoever said VERA FARMIGA. Why wouldn't she work in an sci-fi solo epic. She's got those a-maz-ing eyes and she's hypnotically watchable and the audience won't be tired of her yet and if someone gives her a prime chance at big stardom, she could really wow.

there's room for more than just romcom stars in the world of bankability -- consider how bankable Jodie Foster is and she's never been a romcom person. We need more bankable dramatic actresses, but Hollywood has to give them a shot to make it happen.

NATHANIEL R said...

Why is Blake Lively rising up the food chain so fast?! I mean really? She has never proven herself to carry a film.

Blake Lively's name is probably in the mix because she's also starring in Warner Brothers Pictures Green Lantern and WB Pictures is also producing/distributing Gravity. They might like what they are seeing from her.

As for ScarJo, they might like her chemistry with RDJ in Iron Man 2.

Blake Lively is 22 and looks 35, but I'd never buy her as an astronaut. Never. It would be just as ridiculous as Kate Hudson as an uber-powerful workaholic corporate lawyer. Just no.

I think this role requires some sort of gravitas, as air of maturity, of some experience and depth that Sienne Miller for example would never have. It needs someone with more credibility, with a more "serious" air to her.Someone with a brainy appeal, who inspires confidence, seriousness, someone we can believe could do such a job.

I'd think of someone like Rachel Weisz, Jennifer Connelly, even Gwyneth, and perhaps Julianne Moore if she's not too old- depending on the child's age, she might be- Angelina herself-since the role was written with her in mind, Laura Linney (age may be a problem for her as well).

Yumjin Kim was nothing short of fabulous in Lost. By far the best fo the female cast and one of the best of the whole cast. She was brilliant and added a lot of layeres and depth to her character. And her age seems to fit just right (remember that it takes many many years of training to become an astronaut).

aclp said...

Maybe Maggie G......Charlize as well. She could be really good in this.

Kate Winslet could be wonderful as well but I dont know if she'd be interested in this sort of project.

Paul Outlaw said...

I fully support the Jennifer Garner mention.

I could see her acing this really easily (since she does strong, but overly emotional, woman so well). I also think people want to see her kick ass on the big screen. I know she's not bankable, but if this role doesn't get cast till post-Arthur (which is a while away and could be hit) maybe she'll be given the chance.

Cinesnatch said...

I think they would have to go with a semi-bankable actress with depth. Meaning, they need to pick a 30 or 40-something actress who has "appeared" in her share of hits.

Cate Blanchett

Julianne Moore

I'm surprised I find those more interesting choice than Nicole Kidman, but I do.

But, still, I think they should wait for Jolie.

Anonymous said...

I had the extreme good fortune of just reading this script and want to clear up a few things:

She doesn't have a kid. I don't know where that information came from but it's totally inaccurate. So she could be played by a younger actress, but I think Kidman (whom I imagined in the role as I read it) could also theoretically be great, though perhaps a bit old.

Rebecca Hall and Marion Cotillard seem to be the most logical choices to me, though I could also see Paltrow. I think Jolie, frankly, would have been terrible casting (and I say this as somebody who likes her generally) and I'd bet that her turning it down has more to do with that than anything else, because the screenplay was utterly phenomenal. I really hope they can scrape together funding for it because it should be an absolutely extraordinary film, especially (obviously) with Cuaron at the helm.

Andie said...

This seems like a Jodie Foster role to me. I can't believe hollywood would not even bring her into the discussion. Is it because she's in her late 40s? The role is an experienced scientist. Why is Blake Lively in the discussion? I agree with Nathaniel about them going after flavor of the month 20-somethings with no box office credibility. Foster can carry a movie, can hold an audience by herself even for long periods of time, and she can open a movie to number one. She just takes too many gaps between films. I think she's the best option if you want an actress who is both capable and bankable. And she's credible in the role.

If not Foster, I can for some reason picture Charlize Theron. She doesn't have the box office power Foster has, but I just imagine she would have good chemistry with Robert Downey Jr., and be more credible in the role than Johansson or Lively.

Andie said...

Oh along with Theron and Foster, I really love the Vera Farmiga suggestions too! She's a fantastic actress with great screen presence and she can be credible in the role. I would love to watch her in a film like this. I agree Nathaniel, we need more actresses who can be bankable in more than rom-coms. Other than Jolie and Foster (who rarely works), who is there that can do that?

Craig said...

Who would have good screen chemistry with RDJ and pull off the role? I like Michelle Monaghan -- can anyone forget her in Trucker? If not, Naomi Watts, Vera Farminga or Jennifer Connelly would work -- they all play well off their leading men and can carry a film.

NATHANIEL R said...

Andie -- i'm glad to see that several people are ready for more Vera Farmiga. Hollywood really needs to take a chance on her.

anon -- i can't remember which site i read it on but i read a few sites about the project and a couple mentioned a child back on earth she was trying to get home too. Hmmmm. if she doesn't have a child on earth, the age isn't as important EXCEPT FOR that she's someone who works on a space station so theoretically should not be some teenager but a working profressional.

Craig -- i mentioned MOnaghan mostly because she was so good with RDJ in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (and good in North Country, too) so I'm curious as to why HOllywood hasn't jumped.

adam k. said...

Oh god, anyone but ScarJo or Halle Berry. Those two need to STOP ruining effects-heavy or otherwise tricky mainstream films. And also stop ruining their own careers.

I'm liking the Theron, Kidman, Thurman, Hall, Bullock ideas. I don't get Gwyneth though. Unless the film's tone is supposed to be silly, I don't see it. I think she's often dull when she's trying too hard to be depressingly serious.

Also, the ides of Abbie Cornish intrigues me. I don't know if I see her with RDJ, but I'd love to see her in something like this. Saldana would be interesting, too.

And I agree with whoever mentioned Farmiga. I absolutely could see her in this. She has that great exotically-otherworldly-yet-exceedingly-grounded vibe. And she needs more interesting projects.

Jolie would probably be best, though. Is she just declining because of timing? If so, they really should just delay it until she's ready.

My next choice would probably be Farmiga, but she isn't nearly bankable enough to get the part.

adam k. said...

I didn't even think of Foster. She's probably too old, since she's actually older than RDJ and that's a big no-no in Hollywood blockbusters. And she'll probably be 50 by the time this thing is made and/or released. But 10 years ago, she would've been a shoo-in to get this role.

Don't all her parts nowadays come to her when someone else passes? I can just see her every time, getting a script and being like, "eh, I really don't wanna do this... Flora Plum's finally coming together... What? $20 million? As in $10 million, twice? Oh fine, why not..."

Andie said...

Oh Nathaniel are the RDJ and female character love interests? If so, I can see why Foster wouldn't be considered ofcourse. But if the characters aren't written to have that hollywood romance, then I say, why not Foster? Her age is more credible for an experienced astronaut mother than a teenaged Blake Lively. lol.

adam- lol. It seems that way. She got a Sean Penn role and a couple of roles Nicole Kidman passed on. Though strangely she seems to me more bankable than Kidman anyway. She just stays so under the radar and takes gaps between work, people forget that she carried Panic Room and Flightplan completely on her own to hits. I think she'd be able to help a film like Gravity with RDJ co-starring. She will sometimes take three years between films and still get a huge paycheck and have them open at number one. She has a weird career. But wish she'd act in better films now than Flightplan. Maybe she's more interested in directing now, but that part of her career seems cursed. lol.

to answer the question -- or rather, not answer it -- i don't know if they're meant to have a romantic relationship. there's a lot of article about the movie but they all seem to convey vaguely different information about the characters/plot. "It's just 3 years, that's nothing. If Hollywood is that narrow-mindend.... "

Agreed. And we're seeing a trend of more actresses being able to do well in blockbusters at an older age. Sandra Bullock is only two years older than Jodie Foster. Meryl Streep is doing amazing box office for an actress her age. I think if the two lead characters aren't love interests, Foster would be a perfect fit for this film and along with Downey Jr draw some people. This is her kind of role. Forget a 20-something actress. lol.

Still also LOVE the Vera Farmiga idea if they trust Downey Jr to be the box office draw alone.

Whoever first said Vera Farmiga is a genius! When I read that it felt like the sky opened. Of course! She's truly an actress that deserves a BIG chance. She has excellent chops and I think she can deliver a film on her own.

Other options for me would be Cate Blanchett and Naomi Watts. I do (to my surprise) also see Sandra Bullock as a fit for this role. Nay for Paltrow who I've lost interest in as of recent years. Kidman could well work but her physical adjustments have been putting me off and I'm afraid that can become a detriment to her acting at some point.

Other fantasies that are just that, fantasies: Penelope Cruz, Helen Mirren, Juliette Lewis, Holy Hunter, Daryl Hannah, Gillian Anderson.

And as much as I love Kate Winslet —God knows I adore her; she's my second fav actress after La Streep—, I don't see her suitable for (whatever) the tiny little bit of what we know of this role.
