Quote of the Month

Tilda Swinton, muse of 80s fringe auteur Derek Jarman (she's starring in a documentary about him which plays @ MoMA next month), was asked what that queer legend would have thought of her Oscar for Michael Clayton
I think he would have laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed. And then, he would ask me for the thing to melt it down into an artwork.

Oh, but Tilda...it was artwork.

the performance, that is.

what -- no love for the shiny statue itself?

Oh the statue is definitely artwork. I often wonder where actors put their Oscars in their house, but I especially wonder where Tilda put hers.

I love her SO MUCH. I have little else to add.

Emma Thompson has hers in the bathroom, as does Susan Sarandon. Anyone know anything about other oscar winners ?

Having it in the loo seems to be a popular choice actually. I'm trying to think where I'd keep mine (y'know, when I win one). Maybe the fridge? In the spice-rack? Something culinary. Not the bathroom, though.

I saw that documentary on Jarman, if it's the same one. I hadn't seen anything by him, but I was flicking around the tv, thought, "Hey, Tilda" and started to watch it. It's fascinating, in a sad sort of way.

Yes, if it's the same documentary that Tilda made, which was screened on More4 over in the UK recently, then it's well worth catching. Moving, heartfelt and enlightening enough to make you want to check out (or revisit) his work.

I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I have 'Last of England' sitting here waiting to screen forever and I've seen Sebastiane, Caravaggio and Edward II but I still have more to catch up with.

Everyone should see "Wittgenstein"

Didn't Cher use hers as a doorstop? Mel Brooks keeps both of his in a drawer. I'd probably want to keep him by my bedside.

What about you Nat-where would your Oscar go?

Best documentary I saw at Sundance.

My Oscar would be placed somewhere where it would be impossible to miss. And the entire interior design of the home would revolve around it.

i'm not gonna lie

I'm with you, Nathaniel. I would do exactly what Mercedes Ruehl threatened on Oscar night '91 that she was going to do: string it on a necklace and wear it till she got a widow's hump.

Granted, I would do the same thing if I got an e-mail from Tilda Swinton, like the guy who wrote the NYT article did. Then again, that would be easier to miniaturize and roll up into a locket. So, I think I'll shoot for the e-mail, and then the Oscar.

I'm pretty sure Nicole Kidman gave hers to her mother Janelle.

I confess the only Jarman film I saw was Edward II in college.
