Death Life in Venice

The cinema lives! Whenever I get fatigued by summer explosions and men in tights, I just remind myself: the festivals are coming, the festivals are coming. The auteurs will soon return . My good friend Boyd @ the great European Films has the Venice lineup for you. It looks yummy. Not only do we have the new Coen Bros (I love their comedies, I do) but a new toon from the master Hayao Miyazaki and a new flick from Darren Aronofsky --we didn't even have to wait that long this time --and that's just scratching the surface of what will be there. My oh my. Which film are you most looking forward to?

I can't tell if I'm more excited for Burn After Reading or Rachel Getting Married. On one hand I'm easily seduced by the starpower punch the Coen film will pack, but the actressexual in me is desperately waiting for Anne Hathaway to shine the way she did in Brokeback Mountain with a meatier (tehe) role.

I believe both films made my 10 Most Anticipated films of 2008 list on the blog.

I say The Burning Plain, without really thinking about ist, just becuase of Charlize Theron.
Wwll actressexuality sometimes goes mysterious paths...

Ponyo, of course!

Ah, Hayao.

The Wrestler, if only because the premise and cast list is so mystifying and I cannot wait to see how the deli storyline pans out. Other than that, I'm most jittery about Burn After Reading.

There's a lot of goodness in that line up. Hopefully most of them show up at the NYFF, especially the Claire Denis.

Miyazaki, Demme, The Wondrous Coens, Oshii, Kiarotami, Varda, McElwee... Wow, what a lineup.

I've only seen "Pi" from Aronofsky and was blown away, but can't say I'm a "fan" until I see more.

Oh, and is that a new Bigelow feature? How the hell did I not know about this!? This is going to be a much better year than I previously thought.

Miyazaki's Ponyo On A Cliff.

He's a genius.

But also Burn After Reading for its delicious cast and.... well... its the coens.

I recently watched one of our films in competition for the Horizons category, "Jay." It's something very different and refreshing (and it's the director's first movie!) from our Philippine cinema these days. Sure it's gay (again) but the treatment is haunting black comedy that everybody at the screening loved it.

Only problem I can see is that foreign audiences might not totally accept that what is happening on screen really is how those types of news/journalist segments are made.

I would recommend it still.

Rooting for Anne Hathaway to get a nom this year!

Ponyo! Especially if it is to be Miyazaki's last film (which I highly doubt, since he said the same thing about his last four or so films).

I love the Coens, but I just can't muster a lot of excitement for Burn After Reading. It looks to me like something that would fall into the Intolerable Cruelty school of Coen comedy rather than the Lebowski one. Still - you can't go wrong with Malkovich, Jenkins or Swinton.
