Open Discussion

Friday... let it all out. Say something cinematic in the comments.

I'll start with a few errant thoughts. 1) I'm terrified about what might come next for Oscar. 2) I'm also thinking about how nice it would be if I had the power of jumpcuts or dissolves in real life... I'd like to be able to get rid of bad takes and just jump ahead to a future scene, you know? 3) Why do Quentin Tarantino & The Weinstein's annoy me so much when I tend to love the Tarantino movies. Don't talk about future plans and tv series and sequels and extended cuts before a movie is out. Just freaking finish your movie and let us see how we like it first. I'm grumpy!

I think "Inglorious basterds" by quentin tarentino won't be so great. I saw the trailer and it didn't seem interesting. I'm not really into army type movies at the moment. It seems every movie involving war gets too much praise from critics and always get oscar buzz. I'm sure his take on Nazis and what not will be unique or hopefully it will be or it'll be like many other movies. I also hate how all the good movies come at the end of the year, it should be a year round thing. I always wonder about what if all these good films came in the beginning if the year, would they be recognized? Is there any good movie to look foward to in the summer, I'm bored.

(1) I am so in love with Easy Virtue that I'm planning on seeing it for a third time this weekend. I don't feel bad about this because Cheri hasn't opened here yet. Colin Firth is absolutely fantastic, Kristin Scott Thomas is her usually stellar self, but the real surprise is the engaging turn by Jessica Biel. God, what a movie.

(2) Philip Glass should score my life. It would be so epic.

You know I hate Tarantino: hate his hyperactive writing, his leering direction, his Creepy Weird Thing About Women. But I'll probably still see "Inglorious Basterds." I'm like Charlie Brown with the football.

But that's not what I came here to say. What I came to say is this: I find "Balls of Fury" far more entertaining than it has any right to be. I'm not proud of it, but I've watched that sucker at least 5 times on HBO.

Speaking of suckers and HBO, I've also just started getting into "True Blood." But that's not really officially cinematic, so forget I said it.

walter -- i still have not seen easy virtue. i guess you're highly recommending.

but if philip glass scores your life... you do know you'll have trouble hearing the dialogue right. that shit is loud.

juno101 i feel certain that QT's will be unique. whether or not it'll be good remains TBD.

I'm really annoyed that Tatum O'Neal won that Oscar over Madeline Kahn.

(Can't wait for True Blood on Sunday.)

I'm terrified of what this discussion might turn into! :-/

Quentin Tarantino does make me very annoyed whenever one of his films come out too. I remember this time last year when the script was leaked (I never read it.) and everyone was saying it's a masterpiece. ::eye roll::

The trailer for Amelia looks...gulp...ok?

I can't believe the same people who wrote Star Trek wrote Transformers 2 although some of the problems of both films are vaguely similar. Bad Taste apparently runs in the family because Jeffrey Lyons gave Transformers good review. No wonder his show is being cancelled.

I was getting ready to watch Wendy and Lucy until I heard about MJ. I'll watch it tonight along with In The Heat of The Night on TCM. Can't wait for the Hitchcock marathon on Sunday.

I can't stop looking at the Nine trailer. I've seriously must have seen it like 100 times by now. I have a problem.

My anticipation for Public Enemies has soared. I seriously had none like 2 weeks ago, but all of the sudden...maybe its the reviews, most have been near raves/raves.

And I can't find my copy of Spirited Away or The Painted Veil, making me very frustrated and I really really want to watch them again. Although listening to Goldfrapp is making me feel a bit better.

Juno101 said...

public enemies? Looks like it has been done before. I'm still gonna watch it since its anticipated to be good but I'm usually into movies with originality so I'm trying really hard to stay open-minded about this one. (500) days of summer looks slightly unique. I heard the dialogue is very clever and im into that but is the story really different. Its a romantic comedy (supposedly) without them staying together at the end. I've read they don't stay together and the trailer hints that too. So now that I know that it still seems very predictable and very same.

Just discovered a romantic comedy starring Joseph Fiennes!: Martha Meet Frank, Daniel, and Laurence. Not that it was anything more than pleasant, but Joseph Fiennes. In the late 90s. Loved it.

juno 101, I really did'n want to know 500 days of summer's ending

I think i'm over the 10 nominees. Now, i'm just intrigued at what the academy will choose

and re:amelia, don't know about beelzebub, but oscarpeaking it's definetely in for cinematography, art direction and costumes

1) Recently watched "The Last Picture Show" and was distracted by Cloris Leachman's 'old bitty face.' Love her but it's true. 2) Queued up "Audition" on Netflix. Can't wait!

NATHANIEL R said...

agustin and juno (500) Days is not a typical romantic comedy. It's not told chronologically for one so don't worry about any ending spoilers

...

though i would avoid reviews just because some of the scenes are really fun to discover without knowing exactly what they're going to be (and I'm sure people will give lots of the best parts away when they talk about it).

it's a good movie: very fun, well performed, high energy.

P.S. Amelia has its own post now.

I want to know how Naomi Watts chooses what movies she's going to star in. I know there are all sorts of factors involves here but I've always found her career trajectory so strange. A few people seem to refer to her as "Queen of the Remakes" but that seems too simplistic somehow. King Kong, Funny Games, even The Ring weren't what I would call typical remakes. Part of me wishes she had more comic roles because she was ace in I Heart Huckabees.

Catherine I've been starting 'True Blood' as well, and it's really trashily enjoyable. I also can't help but think all the time 'damn, practically everyone in this cast is REALLY hot.'

I liked '500 days of Summer,' but I saw it at Seattle film festival with a Q&A with the director afterwards and the Q&A actually took it down a notch in my eyes. Someone asked the director about the use of words like 'bitch' and 'whore' in the movie, because they seemed so inconsistent with the rest of the tone & feel of the movie. His response was that 'guys are just like that' so it had to be included.

Umm. No. First of all any movie has the possibility of choosing what to present, and can ignore or highlight certain aspects of reality. Second, to use that as the reason in a movie that is so fanciful that the main character dances with a cartoon bird in one scene, and walks out onto a street that then turns into a drawing in another is the laziest excuse for gender-specific insults I have ever heard.

I'm looking forward to seeing "Inglorious Basterds." Even if it's not a masterpiece, I figure that it'll be entertaining.

I second the recommendation of "Easy Virtue."

Also, if you haven't seen it yet, you MUST see "O'Horten." It's one of the best films I've seen so far this year, and it's a real pity that it didn't get an Oscar nomination last year for best foreign-language film.

i just watched Stardust Memories for the first time. very, very good. now i'm trying to decide between watching Milk or Barbarella next.

milk kinds sucked, atleast I think so. Definatly wasn't oscar worthy. It just hit nominated cuz it was released close to oscar season. Acting was good though. Nothing amazing happened though.

I think this is going to be a lackluster year Oscar-wise. They are really going to have to stretch to get 10 best pictures. Inglorious Bastards and Cheri don't seem to be getting a lot of traction, and I can't see what else has a shot at scooping up a lot of awards. Nine, sure, but what else?

That being said: OMG I'M GOING TO GET THIS SITE SHUT DOWN!!! MY FATHER IS A LAWYER; YOU ARE A RACIST!!!

Michael Jackson post = oddest thread ever.

Juno101 said...

wow, did you just threaten this sight using OMG. Your a joke.

I think so far I'm mainly interested in (500) days of summer, shutter island, and precious. I think precious is gonna be my bitch for the oscars, its probably gonna be my favorite.I just wish Tyler perry wasn't involved. Its a huge turn off. I know what he does with movies and the immense cornyness he puts in his own films, he tries making them heartfelt comes across as fake and forced.

Christine said...

Juno101,
Sorry, I think we had a misunderstanding. I love this site. I was actually joking and referring to the weird Michael Jackson thread the other day.

I have high hopes for Precious, I think it has a good shot at an award. I'm not so sure what else is going to happen now with the new 10 best film Oscar category.

Juno101 said...

O, sorry. I was never good at reading sarcasm.

NATHANIEL R said...

well tyler perry didn't MAKE the movie. he's just presenting it. so don't worry.

I HATE misprints on DVDs... I know it's probably very unimportant in the grand scheme of things, but it just gets me annoyed. My "Michael Clayton" DVD has written under the Oscar Nominations list: "Best Actress in a Supporting Role - Laura Linney".

I mean, WHAT THE FUCK? Laura Linney? Where did that come from? Tilda was the only Oscar the film even won!

Also, because it got a lot of shit on the "10 Oscar nominees" post... "The Reader" is not that bad guys. It might be a little structurally off from the way the book should have been adapted, but I prefer it to any of the other Best Picture nominees. And even if you still hate "The Reader", lay off Stephen Daldry. I think to paint him as some Oscar suck-up who only wants to make prestige pictures for Oscar's sake is not only unfair, but wrong.

I'm not loving this new video store I found. Its independent and they have separate sections for GLBT, Shakespeare, Documentaries, AFI Top 100's and even a Criterion Collection section. But unfortunately they never have the movie I want :( Last week tried to rent "West Side Story" and some Boo-urns had it out for over two weeks already. Last night tried to rent "A Clockwork Orange" but nope!; was gone too.
Am I the only one who gets annoyed when video stores don't have the specific movie I want?
Silver Lining: They finally had "West Side Story" in. I'm prepared to absorb some cinema magic! :)
