1982

A sneak peek to what enthuses me about the cinema from, er...ahem, 23 years ago --In short, it's one giant Blade Runner love-fest. To my credit I must share this impressive factoid: My love for Ridley Scott's classic sci-fi noir, which was much dismissed and a big old flop upon release, did not begin way after the fact as it did with most of the world's population. I actually loved Blade Runner right away.

["I have good taste" he says, patting himself on the back reassuringly.]

So, um. How about that 1982!? How obsessive am I? Why do i do these things to myself? I do not know. You demanded retro-active stuff so I'm a-typing away at home as a way of procrastinating other things. This retro project could conceivably fill every single remaining hour of my lifetime. Looking at the list of things I haven't seen: How can I get my cinema-hungry eyes a look at Come Back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean, Cat People, and Shoot the Moon? Netflix doesn't have them!

I really need to go through a lot of these films from Blockbuster. I haven't seen many in truth, including Blade Runner! I'm intrigued by Victor/Victoria though and the wonderful Julie Andrews. What kind of film is it, and what is it about?

For the remaining films you can try Ebay for used goods, or Amazon sell used stuff. It's likely that some of them are probably only available on VHS.

Victor / Victoria is really fun. period musical-comedy with great music and comedy (as it should be)...and you have to see Lesley Ann Warren's performance as a gangster's moll to believe it. Think Jennifer Tilly in Bullets Over Broadway arguably funnier and with musical numbers!

I know Come Back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean was on Cable once! I know Only once :o(

First saw Jimmy Dean on video several years ago. Saw it again recently when Bravo ran it. Held up pretty well. Sandy Dennis has so many ticks I was twitching myself by the end. But I loved it.

And then there's Cher and Karen Black and Kathy Bates. All wonderfully over the top.

I was a huge fan of Blade Runner, too. Next to Gandhi and Tootsie it's my favorite of '82.

How do you do that four-pictures-combined-into-one thing? Do you just put their codings right next to eachother or do you photoshop them into one picture?

anonymous -i hear you on Sandy Dennis -even tho i didn't see that movie.

david -i photoshop them together.

who has seen something i haven't that I should?

I loved Tootsie. So good. Definitely better than E.T.
I saw Blade Runner for a film class, but I don't remember it; I should see it again. Also gotta see Victor(ia). It sounds great.

No bloody wonder you had Lange down in your 'the ones you are supposed to love but I resist' list in your interesting actresses compilation. You haven't even seen 'Frances' which is her greatest performance! See it and I am almost certain you will change your mind.

Well, in all fairness, Nathaniel did nominate Lange for Tootsie instead. In the best actress category no less. You know, I'm one of those who really doesn't think she belongs in the lead category. I thought the supporting tag made perfect sense. Sure, the part is big, but not THAT big. I wouldn't call it a lead. Hoffman is the lead. Lange is the love interest. It's the Kate Hudson in Almost Famous/Natalie Portman in Garden State kind of love interest supporting actress role. And I actually didn't love her in it, really... I don't see why she swept all the awards that year, except I suppose for the Frances double nom. She was just the standard love interest to me... I thought Terri Garr was much more interesting. Oh well.
I too should see Frances.

i haven't seen Tootsie for about 8 years or so now. Maybe Lange is supporting? I just remember that Garr was pissed off and its one of those rare times when a celeb actually vocalized their displeasure about false categorizations.

but i loved both of them in Tootsie. And, yes, I need to see Frances.

Well I thought Lange was supporting. And I kinda thought Garr was better, even with the smaller role. And yeah, I remember hearing how she was pissed off. But why? I doubt she'd have won anyway.
I kinda think Lange won cause they love the love interests, cause of the double nom and cause they clearly couldn't vote for her in lead over Streep (THE definitive "best actress" performance)... kind of a JM in The Hours situation, if JM had won for the Hours.

Saw Blade Runner 2 years ago and I was blown away. Definite Top 30 of all time for me.

However, here is a question.

Are you going by the original release (which you said you saw) or the Director's Cut minus the narration...

(btw, I have been moving house this last week and have had internet troubles before that but I'm back now! I finally know what it's like to move house so I can understand your whole thing a while back!)

the only version of Blade Runner I ever watch now is the Director's Cut. So much better. One of those case studies in how much of a difference minor tweaks can make.

Dude! This is an awesome list -- I really like that you didn't jump predictably from 1999 to 1998 to 1997, etc. 1982 was so...unexpected!

Anyway, props for "nomming" Dolly Parton in Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Not a fantastic film, and not Dolly's best performance(that'd probably be Steel Magnolias), but hers is a well-deserved mention, in my opinion. That woman deserves more respect, and a good, supporting "comeback" role -- in an Oscar-calibre picture! Oh, how I wept to see her waste away in trash like that abominable Frank McKlusky movie back in 2002...

Dolly went a bit loopy, looks too strange and will never be seen as a serious actress ever again. I'd say that Cher is essentially there now too. However the loss of Cher as an actress is a phenomenally larger loss.

Or, that's my thinking anyway.

Whorehouse was sorta fun, but weird. Specially Burt Reynolds. egads...
