Love Stories

Since tomorrow is Valentine's Day [Have a Happy One!] let's get all sentimental with the movies.
Which screen love story makes you believe in love?
Which couple always strikes you as a perfect match?
Which tragic romance always gets you teary-eyed?
Which actor or actress do you think is regularly expert at convincing you they love each new co-star?
Discuss in the comments. If you're a heartless one, feel free to diss screen couples you hate.

I like Ghost a lot, specially the scene where they are making the pottery. Ultra sensual.

I also love Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, specially the last scene with Ziyi "sacrificing" herself for her love. Very beautiful and romantic.

Gay-oriented, I like Beautiful Thing: the relationship between the two teenagers and their dance at the end of the movie, oblivious to the scorn of the neighbours.

Gone With the Wind. Epic and beautiful. I'd also go with Annie Hall as the truest, though perhaps not the most joyous.

Couple who seem like the perfect match? Irene Dunne and Cary Grant in The Awful Truth. There are so many little moments in that movie that I love, but my favorites are when Cary Grant barges in on her at Armand's, and when she comes to his apartment to say goodbye the day before their divorce is to be finalized.

And one of my other favorite love stories: I Know Where I'm Going!, with Roger Livesey and Wendy Hiller, directed by Powell and Pressburger. The tone is just right, the photography beautiful, the characters' transformations by the end of the movie believable, and Roger Livesey's voice is divine.

Somewhere in Time! Unfairly derided by mes amis on Valentine's Day 2002, a day that still hurts my heart.

And now, In the Mood for Love. Awfully aching.

Oh, whoops, I didn't really answer your questions--I was just thinking about the tragic one. Not sure what it means that that was the only one I really saw in your list... !

Perfect Couple-Holly and Fred Baby in Breakfast at Tiffany's
Tragic Romance-The English Patient (so beautiful and wonderful and that farewell...)
Romance-Ralph Fiennes (though he does seem to repeat romantic partners)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The English Patient. Mulholland Drive.

(Yes, I'll place Mulholland Drive in any category).

Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet take this award.

What love story makes me believe in love

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, first, last and forever. From both their first meetings to their last memory, Joel and Clementine are a movie couple for the ages. Their final hallway meeting ("Okay") is one of the great movie moments

Which couple always strikes you as a perfect match?

Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, A Place in the Sun. Maybe because in terms of sheer beauty they are overwhelming.

Gotta mention Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in the Before Sunrise/Before Sunset for modern couples.

Which tragic romance always gets you teary-eyed?

Celia Huston and Trever Howard in Brief Encounter. Such delicately shaded performances, and their final moments never fail to elicit tears.

Which actor or actress do you think is regularly expert at convincing you they love each new co-star?

Ooh, tough question. Ralph Feinnes is a good choice (Kristin Scott Thomas, Rachel Weisz, Cate Blanchett have all shared good chemistry with him). Kate Winslet manages to have chemistry with everyone she shares the screen with (not only Jim Carrey, but Alan Rickman in Sense and Sensibility, Melanie Lynskey in Heavenly Creatures, Hugh Bonneville (sp?) in Iris). (Yes, I will die if Ralph Feinnes and Kate Winslet make a film together). And I have to give a special mention to Gong Li and Maggie Cheung, who make me fall in love with them whenever I see them on screen. And Frances Conroy manages to suggest the joy that comes from love (filial, romantic, etc) so easily in Six Feet Under, but I haven't seen her in much else.

Kate Winslett and Leonardo DiCaprio in "Titanic".

$1.845 billion worldwide for a 'chick flick' can't be wrong.

potr ---omg. u scared me with the chuck & buck reference

pedro -beautiful thing is sweet as can be, yes. although i never really felt the Ziyi Zhang love in Crouching Tiger. I was all about Yeoh and Yun Fat denying their love. Very Ennis and Jack of them.

Cal -YES. Annie Hall. Woody in general, at least as far as the neurotic intellectual set in the late 70s to mid 80s goes.

Caleb -good choice with Remains of the Day. Hadn't thought of that one at all in terms of romance but definitely stirring. I've never seen Sunflower --must add to netflix queue.

gsanders --i just watched The Awful Truth again the other night. Definitely one of the best films of the 30s. It really is a spectacular pairing. the chemistry couldn't be any better. and hilarious, too.

Dr. S, i always go tragic too. my fav is West Side Story. We most be hopelessly defeatist.

john. love the Tiffanys reference. Though they always rang true to me as a soul-mate friendship as opposed to flat out romance? Thoughts?

Rob -FUNNY.

C.P. -re: Pfeiffer --do you mean she convinces you of her love? Because I do think she's underappreciated in this regard. Her chemistry is often just intense with the leading men.

Arkaan -definitely agree on Fiennes. W/ Ehle in Sunshine, Moore in End of the Affair, Weisz in Gardener, etc... he's the best.

carl -my mind still reels at that box office take.

javierag -you go right ahead with Mulholland Dr. it can twist and curve into any meaning, genre, or list.

The cinematic romance I cherish most is the achingly beautiful Leaving Las Vegas.
It’s rare, very rare, that genuine love and passion is brought to the screen in such a blistering and uncompromised fashion. While LLV is crushingly sad, disturbing and heartbreaking, there is a transcendent quality of hope embedded in the two lover’s brief affair which makes all the pain worth while. Cage and Shue give two of the most raw and haunting performances ever put on celluloid while playing the doomed lovers Ben & Sera. Their chemistry together is scorching and unforgettable. (Could anyone forget that kiss by the poolside or the film’s crushing final with Ben’s “angel” wrapped around him in bed during his final moments?) Seriously, if there ever was a film that made me believe two souls could fall in love, this was it.

-Would also like to mention that I think Ralph Fiennes has an extraordinary gift at evoking reunion passion with his co-stars. It’s most clearly evident in The English Patient opposite Kristen Scott Thomas (their scenes together where searing and intimate) as well in such recent entries as The Constant Gardener.

Which screen love story makes you believe in love?

Celine and Jesse, Before Sunset. Who wouldn't believe in love after those two? They are a romantic's wet dream.

Which tragic romance always gets you teary-eyed?
Katharine Hepburn and Rossano Brazzi, Summertime. She spent so much of her life without it, and then she finally has it in her grasp, only to willingly let it slip from her fingers.

Kind of like Scarlett in Gone with the Wind... or Ennis, of course... aaaaaaaaaahhh, tragic romance.

you totally just made me desperate to see LLV again.

Tim and Dawn!!

Wait, does The Office count as a screen love story?

(I'd say Joel & Clementine, or Jack & Ennis, but that would be sooo cliche of me...)

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in Before Sunset / Before Sunrise are the couple that make me believe in love over and over again. The scene where he takes her 'picture' and their first meeting in the first film; the entire breakdown in the taxi in the second film. Dancing to 'Just In Time' by Nina Simone in the end ... gets me every time.

Also, My Beautiful Laundrette the first movie I saw where two guys could love each other and for it to be romantic and beautiful, a wonderful movie.

Oh my God how could I forget "Before Sunrise"????? Stupid me.

Amelie and Sleepless in Seattle are my rom choices. I love them oh so much and i just get all smiley and giddy when I watch them (even though in the latter they only meet at the very end)

The Before couple is indeed a great cinema romantic pairing.
