Good Mornin' (London)

It's a new morning.

"It's a NEW WORLD!"

I hope you slept well and woke up as radiant and [ahem] 'refreshed' as Viola here. Thanks to all the faithful UK readers checking in with The Film Experience each morning. If you're feeling extra chipper, say hello in the comments.

Aw, nice to see that you care about us London folk. Good morning, indeed.

Though, frankly, it's not really the London way to wake up as fresh-faced and gleaming as Viola there. I think I feel (and, regrettably, look) rather more like David Thewlis at the end of Naked.

good morning and a couple of thoughts...

Can Jean-Claude Van Damme pull off his first Oscar nomination for JCVD for which he's consistently scoring raves from every festival the movie has played? It's said to feature an awesome and unforgettable speech which would likely be an irresistible Oscar-clip. Right now I'd say no, but the movie is building a considerable buzz and certainly it seems that his performance - and actual quality of acting - is catching everyone off-guard.

Second, after learning what "The Blind Sunflowers" - spanish submission for the Oscars - I'd name it the official dark horse. Great director, awesome stars (Javier Camara and Maribel Verdu) and a touching material... Until the field clarifies on the Foreign Film race, I'd be betting my money on this one.

Third, I honestly think The Dark Knight is going to end with some tecnicals and Ledger's nominations. Nolan and the movie, ignored, the screenplay also. I'm afraid that we have to wait at least 5-10 years to see a superhero movie nom'd. No, Watchmen won't be able, either, no matter how good could it turn to be.

Yes Guy I agree, here in the UK none of us actually wake up radiant.

Thanks for the shoutout Nathaniel, I would be extra chipper though, if you could tell us your thoughts on the new Benjamin Button trailer (nudge nudge wink wink).

As soon as I saw the word London, I had to comment. I know it's a big famous place, but it's still strange to me to see people from outside England talking about it.

Re: "Watchmen" not being able to get nominated for Oscars - obviously I agree (a Zach Snyder film released in March has no chance) but when Paul Greengrass was supposed to be directing it, I honestly had high hopes that it would do for the comic book genre what LOTR did for the fantasy genre - namely, get it nominated for Oscars. It was politically relevant, it had a really respected director, and comic book movies were on their way to some real legitimate critical adoration (before The Dark Knight came along and made that an actual reality). However, it isn't going to happen now, and even if it does, The Dark Knight has kind of taken some of the shine off it.
