News
Toronto Star a second sequel to The Blair Witch Project? Er...
Coming Soon I missed this news in the crush of Halloween stuffage but Anthony Hopkins will play Odin in Thor. The way Hollywood casts you know it was either going to be him or Liam Neeson (they're the only two who do mythic father figures now, right?).
Slash Films Gattaca to spawn TV series? Hmmm, that could actually be good... as long as its psychologically / politically focused a la Battlestar Galactica

Oscar & Miscellania

Butt Magazine fun photo shoot with Rossy de Palma (of Almodovarian fame). Yes! [thx]

Are there any links out there about the new Battlestar Galactica movie, or did it just suck that bad? I can't find anything, and there was always so much about the series.

Gattaca on tv? Jude Law guest starring hopefully...

I remember before I saw Gattaca the first time a friend of mine said Jude Law and Ethan Hawke made out in it and I was dissapointed they didn't - there was even a bit when Ethan was sorta on top of Jude and I my heart was about to plop onto the couch but nothing.

I still hold a grudge about that.

OT but Nathaniel you're leafy banner is increasingly making my mind flash to what happens to 'Tomas' in The Fountain. I'm half expecting myself to cough out a maple leaf!

Supporting Actress Smackdown has sort of been letting me down lately. They've agreed with the Oscars a little too much for my liking.

Someone ought to try launching a Supporting Actor Smackdown. I know you guys are more into actresses, but still...

It's a pity most Almodóvar actresses don't have solid post-Almodóvar careers. Rossy de Palma, Loles León and Bibiana Fernández do just regular guest TV appearances in shows that are far below their talent. Even Victoria Abril is quite lost, around here at least, her IMDB profile says she's been busy in French TV. I think Carmen Maura is the only one who managed to get solid parts after Almodóvar and right now she's in that difficult age for women in movies...
Even Blanca Portillo who's now one of his regulars is on a TV series à la Glenn Close. Obviously Almodóvar himself can't cast all of her past actresses all the time, but I wonder why other movie directors don't make the most of their talent.

Off-topic. I guess this is well-known, but I was watching videos on youtube and I found an interview with Almodóvar given a few months ago. He said he's still tempted by Hollywood from time to time (he thinks it's quite unlikely he'll ever accept anything). And that when he was the "next big thing" after Women on the Verge, he was offered to projects that were too "obvious". The first one, Sister Act because it was nuns singing (I can't imagine Almodóvar + Disney). And the second one, To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar; because they were drag queens.

My girlfriend finally got me watching Battlestar Galactica this past weekend.
I'm hooked...so we're doing this thing where we're switching off an episode of Battlestar (for me) for an episode of Angel and/or Buffy (for her, of which she's now hooked)...it'll do until Lost comes back on. :-)

So? Why is agreeing with the Academy such a problem if that's what they like and agreed upon?

That Brad Smith song should probably be eligible because it sounds like it was commissioned for the movie. More specifically, it sounds like the kind of thing a songwriter might come up with after being told, "We edited this scene to Jose Gonzalez's "Heartbeats" but we don't want to pay the licensing fee for it. Can you write us something similar?"

Yes I am cynical and yes this category is broken.

Nathaniel, I caught Showbiz Tonight last night and they were talking about a magazine that is doing an article on over 40 successful power players in Hollywood in the actress category. Included were Streep, Pfeiffer, Weaver, Sarandon, Tomei, Bullock, Blanchett, Keaton to name a few. Sigourney Weaver was talking to an interviewer about how amazing Streep was in Julie & Julia. She loved her performance and said it was one of her best in her long career. I think the actors will be voting for Streep come Oscar time...

Kyle... that is crazy stressful. How will you keep all the tangled plot webs straight. BUFFY and BATTLESTAR are so complicated in their long term plottings.

and LOST. yikes.

anon that's what i'm talking about. i totally think she's going to win.

As 15-time nominee and two-time winner Meryl Streep says, "The Oscars should be Jan. 2. By the time we get to the Oscars, these same winners have trudged up on stage multiple times.

"The best acting all year is when they act surprised."

Now that sounds like an idea!

Nathaniel - We're lucky since we have each other to ask questions (this will be my 3rd go round on Buffy, and my 2nd on Angel; this will be her 2nd run through of Battlestar).
It's a funny story since neither of us were really interested in either's favorite show...I had to skip around a bit on Buffy (she was not digging that first year) but the third season got her :-)

marsha -- i love Streep as an actress but now i love her as an oscar advisor too.

the awards on january 2nd would be awesome.

you know what that would mean? That would mean the movies would have to start coming out earlier to gain momentum, too.

Meryl's comment is brilliance.
