Saw "Last chance Harvey" on DVD yesterday, loved it more than I could admit it. Such laid-back chemistry from Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. Wish they could make more movies together. Kinda like the cotinuation of Before Sunrise. Hoffman's speech is excellent, and Thompson at the end is vulerable and lovely at the same time.

Also recently saw a screening of Thirst by Chan-woo Park (???). Loved Oldboy and Lady of Vegeance. Only loving half of this movie though. The 1/2 half is so original and perverted and exciting! The second half just lost its focus and went on for too long....as least the director has fun...lol....but I think right now my favourite performance of this year is the bored housewife turned blood thirsty monster (a performance from a former beauty queen!!), so ferocious and entertaining.

Finally saw ALL THAT JAZZ, which means I've finally finished seeing all Bob Fosse movies. I don't think he's ever made a mediocre film (I'm one of the few who enjoyed STAR 80), but it's true that his low quantity of films helps him boost his average.

I've just watched "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...", famous Indian musical from 2001 and it was dumb as hell, but beautiful and perfectly realized. I totally loved it - I was laughing my ass off and crying at the same time.
I was surprised to find out that it lost almost all the Indian Film Awards to Oscar-nominated "Laagan", which for me wasn't half as gripping.
Does anyone here watch Bollywood movies?

I watched THE PARTY last night, a late 60s Peter Sellers/Blake Edwards comedy. It's quite funny - there's no plot, to speak of, it's just Sellers, playing an Indian man, wandering through a party at the home of a film producer, causing all sorts of unintentional havoc. At its best, it plays like the American film Jacques Tati never made.

Last current film I saw was SOUL POWER, which is by far the most fun I've had in a movie theater all summer.

"A New Life" with Alan Alda, Ann-Margret, written & directed by Alda. Typical Alda material but enjoyable for a fan. If you want to see Alda with a Mike Brady perm and beard find a copy on VHS. It should be out on DVD but isn't.

Agree with you Marshall1 on "Last Chance Harvey".

Raisint Arizona and West Side Story (for the 3rd time) last night. Raising Arizona was pleasant, and I loved Holly Hunter's performance, and it was refreshing to see the old Nic Cage (I also just rewatched Peggy Sue Got Married the other day...his voice is so ridiculously funny in that movie)

I love West Side Story, but more for Rita Moreno and George Chakiris, and the choreography then anything else. I like Natalie Wood in it well enough, still, not exactly a convincing Puerto Rican, and it really takes out of the movie at times.

PRIMER, for the fifth time.

What a fantastic mindfuck.

Just watched "Confessions of a Shopaholic".

It was so hallow. The lead girl was vapid.

It was barely entertaining.

just saw back to back toy story 1 and 2 with my 2 year old brother for the umpteenth time.
He never gets bored of them, and neither do I.
The funny thing is, I have them in english, and my brother isn't bilingual yet, but he loves them all the same!!
He asks for Woody every 15 minutes or so, I've created a monster!

I watched (500) Days of Summer last night, and I absolutely loved it. It was, by far, one of the best comedies I've seen in a long time.

Very uncharacteristically of myself, I just watched Wes Craven's New Nightmare. It was the cap-off to an equally uncharacteristic viewing up the entire 'Nightmare On Elm Street' series.
It took 7 movies to confirm that I do not really enjoy the 'Nightmare On Elm Street' series.
Though I kind of miss Freddy.
Kind of like when I forced myself to watch the 'High School Musical' trilogy and I could not stop missing Ashley Tisdale when I was done.
Why do I do these things to myself?

The Exorcist (very good, but hardly the scariest movie of all time).

As for J&J and GI:J; I don't know which one looks worse.

I just saw 500 Days of Summer the other day and enjoyed it. I remember first seeing the teaser trailer MONTHS ago and thinking, "this is definitely gonna be AWESOME." However, I didn't fall in love with it like I thought I would.

I've also been on a bit of a Meryl Streep high lately. I just finished watching Bridges of Madison County (I can't say I was impressed) and Doubt yesterday. Doubt has become one of my favourites but I can't say that I was blown away by Bridges. Clint Eastwood has always been a bit of a bore to me. I like a bit of range in an actor .. Also, I really wanna see Julie and Julia just for Meryl. I hear her Julia Child is PERFECT !! SO EXCITED !

Also, I just finished watching a bunch of Almodovar films. I absolutely LOVED them ! He has definitely become one of my new favourite directors ! I love a director with his own style !

just back from "My Life in Ruins" (family outing), ugh!!! how many stereotypes can you fit in a single movie?! Had to go to the beach after to wash out the bad taste in my mouth!

kika (unusual and funny), another woman (just simply great) and the straight story (kinda boring, but fine).

trying to watch all almodovar, woody allen and david lynch films i didn't catch yet...

Re-watched Watchmen and Happy-Go-Lucky yesterday. Love them both (though Watchmen is certainly uneven). Looking forward to Obsessed and Tiptoes on DVD from Netflix and maybe Julie & Julia in theaters. If no one knows what Tiptoes is, then YouTube the trailer. It's gonna be awesome.

The Dreamers on DVD and it was brilliant! (I know few people agree with me on this one)

I have just seen "The Accidental Husband". What an awful movie. It's terrible to see Uma Thurman in movies like these.

Watched Julie and Julia yesterday and GI Joe today - really enjoyed both!

Meryl Streep was amazing - wouldn't be surprised if this was her #3.

It was Berlin Golden Bear winner "La teta asustada". A beautiful and strong piece of cinema. B+.

marshall1 agreed that emma & dustin had fine chemistry. Emma was so fantastic in that movie... but alas, I didn't think the movie was even remotely keeping up with her.

i need to see Thirst.

james i like Star 80 too. so yes I like all of Fosse's films.

howler i've only seen a few. One of my week areas for sure.

agusint I love that story! little kids are so crazy about repetition though. It's almost frightening. Ok it is frightening.

spencer always pleased to hear of Almodovar converts.

dj i'm starting to think it will be her #3, too. more on that later. it needs a post to explain why.

I watched 'In the Loop' in the theatre last weekend, and I want to see it again! Last night, I watched 'Singles.'

Julia & Julia! It was awesome... and of course made me extremely hungry.

I'm hoping this will be the third for Ms. Streep too :) She's a freaking genius.

Watched (500) Days of Summer earlier this week and really enjoyed it. The "dance" scene was great.

Watched half of Wedding Crashers this afternoon and gave up. I don't like Owen Wilson still.

I just watched 'Fight Club' for the first time, I liked it alot.. last night, actually- I stayed up till 1:30 to watch it and then I couldn't sleep (might have been too afraid of what I would dream about)

Watched "The Proposal" in the theater yesterday, and saw the last 90 minutes of "The Company" on DVD today.
Proposal was the funniest romcom I'd seen in a while, but Company seemed to plod along and fizzle a little at the end.

i saw "GI Joe" 2 days ago,it's just horrible even "transformer 2" is better.
Tonight i again see "the audition"by Takashi Miike and "pi"by Aronofsky:it's a nightmare evening!

Slumdog Millionaire for the second time, this time with my parents. Mum didn't realise that there are a lot of not nice parts in the film - she hid behind a magazine during some of the early scenes. I didn't enjoy Slumdog quite as much as when I first saw it (which was with lowered expectations) but there's still lots to enjoy there I think.

I'm just back from Antichrist. I'm glad I saw it, purely because it's an event film.

@Howler- You've gotta be kidding me! K3G is atrocious on almost all levels (leads Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan just work so well together) while Lagaan is a fantastic film. I've seen my share of Bollywood, and Lagaan has a better story, better acting and FAR better music.

Just watched Away We Go and Adam on Thursday and Friday. I was touched by both, but they're not exactly brilliant. Mendes should always work from simpler topics. When he tackles Big Issues he generally makes a mess, but this film was much sweeter. Adam was sweet too, but it's almost overwhelmed by the stupid Peter Gallagher subplot.

Dark Victory, just a few hours ago and Now, Voyager right now. I'm having a good day.

I saw Taken on DVD. Poor Liam Neeson. The script for the first half was atrocious, and then the script just...disappeared (maybe a good thing?).

At long last, "Twilight," which unsurprisingly, lacked bite.

At even longer (?) last, "Gilda," with Rita Hayworth. Boy, did she photograph well. I loved watching her, and was caught up in the story as well. My favorite scenes were, of course, her song and dance numbers.

Nathaniel -- here's my reasoning...

--the obvious: a strong, baity performance in a biopic
--she had her big "3rd Oscar" campaign last year
--her competition may consist of mostly newbies or younglings (Cornish, Ronan, Mulligan, etc) who the Academy isn't ready to award just yet - a nomination for them will be enough
--she has the reviews
--she's Meryl Streep

Just saw THE COVE, and GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES on DVD for the first time. Liked them both.

The Cove carries off it's Mission: Impossible vibe well, and it's got more gadgets than a Bond movie. It's edited very carefully to prepare the audience for the most harrowing bits, but they're still harrowing. Not something I'd recommend to my friends who get queasy on rollercoasters.

I've been catching up on Howard Hawks, and snagged Gentlemen after the Film Experience post last week. It's my new obsession movie. I love love love Jane Russell with the Olympic team, Jane Russell and Marilyn, Jane Russell as doppleganger. Oh my. Thanks for mentioning it, Nathaniel!

Fifty Dead Men Walking and Volver yesterday. The first has no tension at all until the ending, though it's still all ruined by the first scene starting in media res. The second I thought was wonderful.

It's a good thing today I'm seeing the new Aussie musical Bran Nue Dae because if I wasn't I don't think I'd ever smile again since I'm also seeing Fish Tank (Andrea Arnold) and The White Ribbon!

What a heady combo of films I undertook this weekend (the last weekend for Melbourne International Film Festival).

Von Trier, Haneke and Arnold. Phew!

Carl said...

"Julie & Julia" - yes, Meryl has an excellent shot at a nomination...but are all of you certain that it will be for lead? A campaign for supporting might develop if Monique's performance doesn't get traction, and if the studio sees her as having a better shot at the Supporting statue.

Walter L. Hollmann said...

I loved GI Joe. If you ever played with action figures as a kid, it's like that. It's the insane plotting and logic of a child, but it works, it's great fun, and it's the roots of GI Joe anyway. Also, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cobra Commander? AWESOME.

Julie & Julia I liked a lot, too. Well, Julia anyway. Julie wasn't bad, but it wasn't exactly great. Okay, I guess. The Streep/Tucci Show is cool.

I saw G.I Joe yesterday. It was extremely cheesy, cartoony and disposable but (somewhat) charming. I saw Adam today and I thought it was decent but nothing more than that. I may see Julie and Julie or Paper Hearts tomorrow.

i saw GI JOE. and it was crap. I loved "sugar". I wish more movies are like it.

TylerPratt1 said...

Just saw The Contender for the first time and adored it. Joan Allen is good, not as great as I expected, Jeff Bridges is his wonderfully charming self and Gary Oldman stole the show, he is just phenominal in this movie. The supporting cast is great all around from Slater to Saul Rubinek to William Petersen and especially Sam Elliot, I just cant get used to seeing him without a moustache

Colin Low said...

@Carl: Whether the studio campaigns Meryl for lead or supporting, the Academy will nominate her as lead. Her character's in the title (clearly a two-lead film; not even contentious like The Devil Wears Prada, for which she was also nommed in lead), she's top-billed in the poster, she's dominating the publicity/press/reviews, she's biopicking, and she's Meryl: consummate lead actress.

She's going lead.

The last one I watched was The Graduate which gets better everytime I see it. Hoffman is at the top of his game. This is truly one of the best film of the 60s and it may be Hoffman's best too.

Just watched To Kill A Mockingbird outside in some "Movies on the Bay" thing where I live. I don't think it has aged as well as everyone else apparentally does...

MichaelG you have no idea how happy it makes me to hear that people rent things when they hear them mentioned here. thank you!

Watched "Adam & Steve" earlier; cute, a bit predictable. I didn't really dig Craig Chester or Malcolm Gets. Thank goodness for Parker Posey! She has an amazing face and I loved how she used her feminine wiles on Michael. Found the whole line dancing battle scene cheesily awesome. I think the movies need more cute dancing cowboys. :)

i just saw WANTED for the first time. Fantastically rediculous. Great action pieces, unpredictable plot twists and lovely visuals. I have to wonder what took me so long to watch it.

though i was shocked as hell to hear Morgan Freeman utter "shoot this motherfucker." you would swear i never heard the word before with how hard my jaw dropped.

Plus, Angelina was skinny as hell! but she probably filmed it alongside Changeling.

and it added to my love for James McAvoy. He did a great American accent, imo.

Derreck said...

and a little OT, but i am so sick of hearing about Streep. Yes, she's great and very likeable, but do we always have to talk about her and awards with every film that she does?

Saw Julie & Julia this afternoon. Loved it. The audience I saw it with was also pretty fab. We practically laughed every 3 seconds (in a good way).

Just completely and utterly delightful way of spending a Saturday afternoon in the city.

I saw Aguirre, the Wrath of God. This is now right there as one of my favorite films. Such a visually stunning film and Kinski is perfect as Aguirre (whether he was acting at gunpoint or not).

& Ballet Russes - pretty good.

I've seen "the hurt locker". Supposedly by a critic its a near perfect film but to me its not that close. There was many beautiful images of bullets dropping in the sand but I didn't like the characters but its different and I enjoyed it. I could see become a best picture nominee(now that theirs ten) but I can see not make it aswell.

I saw "fight club" again also. The first time I watched it I didn't know it was so popular, I thought it was just some movie on tv. It interested me but I don't think its great. Its been on amc everyday for the last week. I still thinks its good but the ending bothered me. Still kinda alright for me.

Dimi said...

Watched G.I. Joe rather begrudgingly. I'm glad it didn't try to be anything more than a silly kids movie. Catered to its audience well.

*SLIGHT SPOILERS FOR FIGHT CLUB*

I'm curious to know how people who are seeing it for the first time (since September 11) respond to the last 5 minutes of the movie.

Millenium: Part 1 - Men Who Hate Women.

Good movie, it's nice to see Swedish genre movies for a change. Though I missed some story lines that were in the book, it worked very well as a whole.

The most surprising thing for me is to see that the Milleniumm trilogy (the books) hasn't become the huge phenomenon (it's huge when it becomes an instant conversation topic for anyone who sees you with the book in your hands)it is here. Hopefully, this probably means there'll be no remake.

Finally saw The Hurt Locker.

I'd strap a bomb to my body if Jeremy Renner was going to take it off for me.

Oh, the movie? I thought it was tense, with great performances. I think it is one of the least self-important, effortless war films I've ever seen.

brandz said...

i just saw J&J. meryl streep was masterful. overall the movie was better than i expected. streep will get a lead oscar nomination for this performance.

Marshall1 said...

Just saw 500 days of Summer yesterday. I guess I've built my expectations too high and the movie just turns out to be kind of blah. It is inventive, but the basic themes and plots are kinda boring and conventional. HOWEVER, the lead actors are super great, and I am puzzled that they are not bigger stars. Especially Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He is just freaking adorable, I just want him to be my boyfriend and he can run his fingers through my hair and.....
Anyways, I still remember I used to hate him so much in 3rd Rock..lol

It's not a film, but my wife and I watched the first five episodes of Man Men over the weekend. What a splendid series; I'm embarrassed it took us this long to discover it. We hope to be completely caught up for the premier of Season 3!
