Awards Daily Sasha has an interesting list up for best written female roles. But the Benjamin Button women? Come on now. Even if you love the movie, the writing of those women is not among its chief strengths. What is going on with Awards Daily and that movie?
Antagony & Ecstasy Tim Brayton is rapidly becoming one of my very favorite film critics. Here's his take on Benjamin Button (Sasha won't be pleased)

The Mickey Rourke thing seems so fake. At least to me - how the hell does someone have access to actor text messages? I mean, I have Sharon Stone in my contact list, but it's not the actress, it's my mom.

And the major downside of Benjamin Button is the length. It just didn't need to be almost 3 hours long. Although the Tilda Swinton scenes completely swept me off my feet. Best part of the movie.

As in, my mother reminds me of Sharon Stone in her most batshit, hilarious, and crazy formation.

That Cruise article was gooood.

I didn't think Button was too long.

The text message from Rourke story is absolutely ridiculous! Can we please not report private messages and conversations that may or may not even be true? It sounds like hearsay to me.

Even if he DID write the text...are you telling me Sean Penn hasn't had his own evaluation of Rourke? How many people in this town are sending private emails and texts and having private phone conversations dissing someone else.

We are all allowed our private bitching and moaning. I am so glad mine aren't reported to the press. What country do we live in?

Mickey has been trying very hard to do everything as asked of him. This blow is below the belt and unfair.

Ya the Mickey/Sean thing seems ridiculous. what a heinously generic article.
I completely agree with Sally Belle too. even on the off chance it was Mickey Rourke who wrote this. it was a private txt message that clearly wasnt meant to be seen. Not really bad behavior at all. if anything, bad security cell phone security

What's really disheartening is that people are trying to use Mickey's own past to sabotage him. don't people have anything better to do?

I don't know if this Rourke/Penn thing is true or not, but it'll just go in the bank of another Rourke controversy where voters won't feel comfortable in rewarding him an Oscar. I knew the writing was on the wall months ago with him when he called that paparazzi guy a f--got. Now this, plus his past antics? It makes things that much easier to vote for someone else, and voters have been turned off by less in the past.

Thank you Nat for pointing out this BenJ Button nonsense at AD

they're kissing Benj's Butt so hard there should be a law against such ass-kissing

and Blanchett is gonna win best actress for this ?

if linney managed to get in without globes and SAG it's because that character WAS well-written

I don't mean to offend anyone but what Sasha had been smoking before she wrote this list? Women from Benjamin Button higher than Poppy? Well,...
I actually liked Benjamin Button a lot (B+), but these characters are hardly well written.

I'd like to second RahulB's thoughts on Swinton in CCBB. I can't imagine how I forgot to bring her name up even once when I was reviewing it - I think the single worst part of the film was after her last scene, when you realize that you don't get to see any more of her, and there's still another 90 minutes of the cardboard standee impersonating Blanchett yet to go.

OMG, thank you for pointing out Awards Daily's unhealthy obsession with "Benjamin Button." It's extremely...annoying. Any critic that has anything negative to say about the film is basically blasted on that site. Since when did Sasha Stone & Co. decide which movies are good and which are not? Is the site's mantra not, "The trick is not minding?"

Adam, I know right? I don't quite get how anything over two hours is deemed "too long" or whatever (unless it's The Dark Knight in which case NOTHING SHOULD'VE BEEN CUT!!!) Like, all these reviewers trying to be funny when writing about Button or Australia talking about how they're arse was sore after the first hour and how they needed to get up ever 30 minutes because they're SOOOOOO long. Huh? People are idiots sometimes.

And, yes, that Cruise article was great.

Forgot to weigh in on AD's Bizarro World praise for the women of Benjamin Button: Taraji Henson's character is just one "I don't know nuthin' bout birthin' no babies" away from being the most obnoxious Butterfly McQueen parody in history.

Yeah AD, has been annoying picking on critics who didn't get CCOBB. So Ebert get into it...big deal. I also don't have too much of a problem with critics saying it was too long because it FELT long while Dark Knight didn't (I'm still deciding which one i liked more but I'm leaning towards Dark Knight).

I liked what Taraji did with Queenie. She shouldn't be punished for the archetype she got landed. She managed to make her charming, funny and I empathized with her particularly with her relationship with Benjamin early on. It's like what Nathaniel said in Worst and Dishonerable Mentions about Kristen Stewart. When you're handed a one note role...add notes! Taraji did triumphantly.

That Ben Lyons link made me laugh. I had no idea people felt that strongly against him.

That last sentence of Metcalf's essay is a devastating criitque, but the entire essay is on the money.

yeah I call total bullshit on the Mickey Rourke text situation. Just saw The Wrestler again last night. Best Actor absolutely belongs to him.
