Pandora's Link and JGL's Bad Romance

Due to the long holiday weekend which put me behind and a busy screening week, I've decided to postpone this week's HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT. The series will be back next Wednesday the 15th with Pandora's Box (1929) so you have another week to watch this awesome silent classic whether on DVD or Netflix Instant Watch. Thanks for understanding and please join in the celebration of the immortal Louise Brooks next Wednesday. On Wednesday the 22nd we'll do David Fincher's Se7en (1995) for its 15th anniversary. Honestly, it's the movie I was thinking of picking -- it'd been on my mind and I had an itch to scratch with it -- and then I looked up the release date and couldn't believe my eyes. Obvs, It was meant to be.

Links!
The Big Picture George Clooney's box office pull and the fate of The American.
/Film interviews Aron Ralston. James Franco plays him in 127 Hours.
Cinematical strange stories surfacing from 127 Hours screenings. Medics called in.
MTV Movies Mulan is getting a live action version with Zhang Ziyi returning to action heroine mode. Jan De Bont (Speed) will direct. This message has been brought to you by the year 2000.
Lazy Eye Theater an important message from Machete.
Movie|Line The Verge: Keir Gilchrist. I like this regular feature at Movie|Line.
Mind of a Suspicious Kind would like you to reconsider Megan Fox... as a silent film star.

CHUD Natalie Portman offered the Gravity lead. So much for our casting suggestions last week. I like Portman quite a lot but every actor has their weaknesses and so far she hasn't shown any skill at acting with green screens. Can Cuarón take her to where she needs to go?
Movie City News a cool press kit for Never Let Me Go. Uhhhh, I didn't get this. Boo.
Rooney Mara Network They're already filming The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo? David Fincher is breaking speed records he is. Perhaps he's hurrying to complete filming before the awards season long haul for The Social Network.

And finally here's another Joseph Gordon-Levitt performance. He does love singing the girl songs. This time it's "Bad Romance"

This is my favorite part OF COURSE
For those still doubting the artistic integrity of Lady Gaga, this next verse has three Hitchcock references and the use of the word "shtick"
Heh.

Mulan Remake-As long as they don't sing, I will simply ignore it. Otherwise, I'll watch it for the sheer enjoyment of the awfulness. (This is going to suck, and you know it.)

Megan Fox, Silent Film Star-That would be great...EXCEPT THEY DON'T MAKE SILENT FILMS ANYMORE.

JGL singing Bad Romance-No "ra ra uh uh uh roma romama gaga oh la la want your bad romance"?

I'm not really a Lady Gaga fanatic and mostly have eyes for the fairer sex but that clip makes me wanna listen to Alejandro et al with Joseph all night...

I love Ziyi Zhang since Memoirs of a Geisha and 2046, so she gets a free pass for me. Any commercial exposure for her is a plus.

Speaking of Memoirs of a Geisha though, how fantastic was the Michelle Yeoh/Ziyi Zhang/Li Gong trio?

@ Derreck

SO fantastic!

I've always loved Ziyi, and actually really liked Memoirs (unlike a lot of people...) so I'm optimistic about Mulan...for now.

JGL. I just. don't. get it. That was... not good. But whatever, everything ain't for everybody.

@ Dylan,

I didn't like the movie when i first saw it, but i appreciated the acting, which was top notch. I can't decide which of the three that i like better. I guess i don't have to. :)

Plus, i couldn't believe that Li Gong was 40 or so when she filmed the part, because she looked like she was in her 20's as Hatsumomo.

I had the chance to see the movie again on Blu-Ray and it was so beautiful! Especially that place at the end, wherever the heck it was. Plus, the music! Oh, the music. So lush and romantic.

Memoirs was one of those movies that i had to see again to appreciate more. I'm glad i gave it a second chance. I think Blu-Ray also helped though.

I'm pretty sure I'd suffer from an aneurysm if I attempted to rewatch the culturally obtuse, ideologically repugnant, emotionally flat, and shamelessly melodramatic Memoirs of a Geisha. Rob Marshall horribly mistakes kitsch for beauty.

Ohh look. It's another Lady GaGa plug on FILM-Experience.

More evidence that the only person who should sing Lady Gaga is Lady Gaga. Sorry. It's hard to cover songs that heavily produced for one person's image.

OtherRobert -- i wonder if that's why Madonna's songs are covered so infrequently too despite her having so many hits?

There are a LOT of Lady Gaga covers out there already though.

Bobby -- oh look more bitching about a casual reference to her ;) I just thought it was funny AND two film references: Hithcock and JGL. :)

Derreck -- i love that trio too but not in that particular movie. Like Nick M, I just can't take it.

Lady Gaga remixes/covers are always better than Lady Gaga. I can't fully articulate why I didn't like the original version of this song, is glossy the right word?

Hitchcock's a great director, yes, but he's way too "mainstream" for referencing him to be "classy." A song referencing The Archers? Now that would be classy.

Nothing's concrete re: Gravity. I'm sure Portman wants to do it, but she knows green screen isn't her strength. She's admitted to sucking at improv and stated she turns down projects that require it, and I would imagine she does the same after her career-low reviews for the SW movies. On the other hand, she usually gives something a chance if she trusts/likes the director.

Frankly, after the Blake Lively rumors I'd rather see Portman but I really want Moore.

Is the Mulan "remake" in English? Cause that's weird. I guess I should be thankful they didn't cast a white person.
