Joe & Nathaniel Discuss the Golden Globes

Promised you a Golden Globe aftermath discussion. Here's a teensy bitchy excerpt:
NATHANIEL: worst dressed: Cameron Diaz. just a mess.
JOE: Ugh. As I said last night: Advantage, Justin.
NATHANIEL: so true. she didn't bring sexyback to those awards
JOE: No. She's taking sexy away. Forever.
Read the rest for more on the mish-mash of the Best Picture race, the teeny-tiny heartbreaking hotness of Mark Wahlberg, a split decision on Penelope in Chanel, frightening hair trends, and the glorious perfection of Meryl Streep who understands the value of entertaining speech-making in a way that most denizens of Hollywood, an industry built on self promotion and propped up by public relations, mysteriously never seem to grasp.

Just for the record, Adriana Barraza holds a very important executive position in the American, Spanish speaking network Telemundo. She's like Vicepresident of Neutral Accents or something like that. No kidding. I guess she's like a VP in Acting Couching or something.

She used to direct soap opera's for kids while she was still here.

I didn't like her perfomance but she did look stunning last night at the Globes. Whoaa.

By the way, I'm totally not calling all English people wankers. That...looks weird, the way I said that. I'm really not! Love the English!

I love you, Nat. While reading I think "Who does this arrogant son of a bitch think he is? Why does he think anyone CARES about this chat?"

But I keep reading. It's almost like the Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt thing. Or the Rosie + Donald thing.

...

Let's pretend I didn't compare you to Rosie and Donald.

I agree on the Sacha Baron Cohen thing-what a freaking hottie!

yikes Amy. if you were thinking that I hate to think what casual web surfers thought. ah well... nobody is forcing anyone to read it. ;)

I found Whitaker's speech quite moving actually. He was so stunned, he simply couldn't speak.

I don't think that will hurt his chances with the Academy. If SAG votes for him, he has a chance to redeem himself if he (read: his PR people) feels he must.

Oh, I forgot. I always enjoy when people honor the ancestors.

Nice job, Forest.

I think maybe it was the drink and not necessarily the emotion that had Forest all loopy.

And yeah, Sacha Baron Cohen = HOT.

Sasha Baron Cohen is an idiot. Not funny and not an actor. File him under One of Most Embarrasing Moments in Golden Globes History next to Pia Zadora. Yikes.

Can't believe his "acting" was rewarded over Aaron Eckehardt. It sucks.

And it will suck too if he's nominated for an Oscar for his "acting", leaving the great Gosling out of contention.

The fashion last night was SO BORING. Even Blanchett wasn't up to par. The only person who stood out was Reese Witherspoon, she looked gorge. Kidman better be there next year for the love of God.

I try to avoid tabloid talk but my God! Brad and Angelina scared the crap out of me last night. My brain refuses to acknowledge them as a real couple, so it's always a bit jarring to see them out in public together. It's like seeing sin take human shape or something, ugh.

NATHANIEL R said...

what the fu--?

ha ha. really? yeah, though, something definitely off there. that waxy look (botox?) sure is popular lately

I didn't realize how crazy that made me sound, but yeah. I was totally in denial during the intial Brangelina stages. I just thought it was Brad going through a quick midlife crisis or something. So everytime I see them together I have to remember that yes, they're actually dating LOL.

I've been ragging on Angelina for ages (they got nothin' on my fave celeb couple Vincent and Monica) and now it seems people are joining me. They looks revolting and, yes, like wax figures. They also seemed holier-than-thou as if they'd rather be off single-handedly protecting orphan babies. Like, go home if it's such a chore.

Nat, you said some things that are almost direct quotes from me (although, obviously, not). There's the Brangelina thing, Sasha Baron Cohen, Meryl Streep and Forest Whitaker speechs (that Whitaker didn't do himself any favours), Cameron's dress, the foreign language globe.

On the matter of Forest Whitaker, it's all well and good to get emotional, but when you become a mumbling incoherent mess, it stops being endearing and becomes sorta embarassing and people in their living rooms start shouting "get off the stage!" Would Oscar voters prefer a wild and excited Will Smith, a gracious and slightly cheeky Peter O'Toole or another of Whitaker's speeches. I hope he gets better as the season goes on. I really do.

Having said that, as I've said already, if there's a case to be made against Helen Mirren, Meryl made it last night with that speech. And Baron Cohen? HILARIOUS. Unlike Bruno, I think it's one of the truest forms of performance. He didn't have the convenience of editing and multiple takes and he deserves all the nominations and wins that he gets (hopefully Oscar).

And again, Brangelina need to piss off. They're not even good looking anymore.

Renee Zellweger was hot. Sorry Nat. Her body is amazing. I could see her six-pack under her dress

NATHANIEL R said...

Anonymous I concede that She Who Must Not Be Named was well dressed. but then, that's not so unusual for her.

This is kind of a non-sequitor, but why didn't get to see a clip thing from 'Little Children' like we did for all of the other BP nominees? Wonder if Warren Beatty's drone-a-thon had something to do with it. Hmm...

Marco, due to poor planning, I believe the Little Children clip aired during commercials (the last portion of the show was really rushed).

AS for Streep and acceptance speeches... well, she's had tonnes of practice (this is her sixth Golden Globe). But yeah, the woman is awesome.

Glenn Dunks said...

Little Children needed more advertising than The Departed. I'd be insulted if I were the makers of LC. Damn insulted.

i dont' believe the rush of the ending was warren beatty (those things always take forever and lord knows his speech was shorter than Barbra Streisand's though.

i'm still confused as to why Tom Hanks (ugh) got the pleasure of introducing him when there are so many legendary people actually connected to Beatty's career that would have done it bettter: Shirley Maclaine, Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman.

i hate tom hanks

the reason the show was tight at the end ws that they let the first several winners drone on forever. I'm not a fan of cutting people off but some of those first hour speeches were really meandering and long
