Extremely funny, and takes its gayness to a level that seems to be making masses uncomfortable, and thus, awesome.

Instead, I spent the afternoon watching The Private Lives of Pippa Lee which, HOLY SHIT SOMEBODY BACK ME UP HERE, is one of the weirdest, unintentionally weird, films I have ever seen. I don't think its opened in the States yet.
funny and out there, and definitely cringe-inducing at times. But not to be missed.

I would love to hear your thoughts on Pippa Lee. I have had mixed feeling about Rebecca Miller's other films.
@Christine: I'm trying to write a review right now. It's hard, partly because it's been ages since I actually sat down and wrote a review of anything and mostly because I have such muddled thoughts on the film. Check my (very bare) blog over the next day or so, I'll try and have something up!

Really, i haven't seen it yet, but he was on the tonight show, and really made Connan uncomfortalbe. it was great.

...confusing me with his extravagant spelling. Why is there suddenly an umlaut in Bruno? Or is that just Sasha Baron Cohen referencing 70s and 80s metals bands?
Yeah I skipped Bruno too. I preferred to see COCO AVANT CHANEL and I don't regret it a bit.
I don't know why people said it had problems.
Nat, you can count on the costume nom I think; the last scene is so rich in detail and color in the costumes that it makes for a fantastic résumé of the entire film...
And Audrey Tautou is quite poignant in it... If this turns out to be a year where most of the actresses don't live up to what's expected of them I wouldn't be surprised if she gets nominated.
It's not at all a masterpiece but the film has its moments (it's 6.9 on IMDb, I give it a B). Nivola is just fine in it but not a great role to work with; Benôit Poelvoorde is amazing as a rich heir who spends his time jumping from party to party, from courtesan to courtesan but that has a gigantic heart and soul...
The last five minutes of the film are an amazing Oscar clip... If her name was Jolie and if ol' Clint was directing she'd have her name on the ballot just right now.
And Desplat's score... Oh so right and so uplifting and so depressing at the same time... It's so apt to the moments of the film... And it's yet another masterpiece from this brilliant composer... If God is fair he'll be at the Kodak again this year (for this or Chéri's)
In short... This is actually a very interesting biopic...
The biggest problem I have with the film is the (VERY AND AWFULLY) quick transition from the poor Coco to the rich and famous Coco and I think lots of things get lost between these two phases. That's why I found the film's last act a bit disappointing... They could have sorted it out better...
... entertaining in terms of shock value but weak in terms of humor.

...cleverly marketing homophobia as comedy, much like Amos and Andy marketed racism decades ago. Most people aren't even cognizant of what's going on. Yes, it's outre, but it's philsophically and spiritually different from (the much better) Borat. There, you laughed at the cultural insensitivity of the people Borat encountered. In Bruno, you just laugh at the silly pervert.

not as good as Borat, has some pretty funny moments here and there...but Bruno and his assistant are nowhere near as fleshed out as Borat and his sidekick were, and the storyline was a bit deeper in the previous film.

Pippa Lee was released in UK and Ireland this Friday, yep.
Julianne Moore is (obviously) the best thing about it, but she has less than ten minutes of screen time.
as good as it could be with all the times his stunts were stopped by someone screaming "It's Sacha!"
It was pretty clear to me that Cohen wound up having to piece together a lot of incongruent footage because he had to shift filming locations so many times thanks to being outed during a set-up. It's impossible the pulled Jackson footage could have linked all of the sudden shifts together any better.
I still really enjoyed the film, but think the screenplay was weaker than it could have been. Cohen was better here than in Borat, that I've no doubts about. And the original song? Better than the fake Kazakhstan national anthem.
