Link Widow

Final Girl on the Sorority Row movie poster. Too funny
Noh Way on Away We Go by way of Auntie Mame. Good stuff (though I disagree that Maggie Gyllenhaal's scene is the best in the movie. If anything it's the worst scene in the movie -- though well portrayed by Gyllenhaal -- betraying the movies ridiculous and ugly superiority complex towards half of the lives it happens to glance at)
Times an article on Skin's problems finding distribution (Reminder: that's the movie wherein Sophie Okonedo is a black girl with white parents in Apartheid era South Africa)
Movies Kick Ass revisits Judy Holliday's controversial Oscar win for Born Yesterday

Forces of Geek and a zillion other blogs have posted the new Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow photos from Iron Man 2. Straight boys confuse me so much sometimes. This comment isn't about Forces of Geek (who don't comment themselves) but about the tone of the posts on a bajillion other blogs. Almost all the fanboy/moviegeek sites had previously complained that Scarjo was miscast and I very much agreed. Now, suddenly, everyone is on board because she's well... hot. How is this a revelation? Had they never seen Scarlett Johansson before?
Cinema Blend Russell Brand takes over for the Easter Bunny in I Hop? How bizarre. My first job ever was playing the Easter Bunny at the mall. And now I'm not joking. So I feel a special affinity.
Fin de Cinema more titles announced for Toronto including Kristin Scott Thomas and Sergi Lopez in Partir
Coming Soon Stephen Chow pulls out of Green Hornet. Is that movie ever going to get made?
The House Next Door has a great interview with one of the directors of Battlestar Galactica

So you're saying I shouldn't bother with Away We Go?
As for Toronto, one of the films I'm most curious to see - maybe because I haven't heard anything about it yet - is Partir. And the poster looks pretty good, too.

I think Judy Holliday deserved the Best Actress Oscar that year. A greatly substantial comedic performance. Although I would've given the Oscar to both Gloria Swanson (SUNSET BLVD) & Bette Davis (ALL ABOUT EVE), Holliday was a worthy winner. I also read somewhere Swanson and Davis were both happy at the ceremony when she won.

Kirsten Scott Thomas and Sergi Lopez together?

I'll be in my bunk.

Surprised Nathaniel didn't place a link about Zellweger doing Bridget Jones 3 (reeks of desperation for Renee's dying film career. Go get that TV sitcom, girl!) and Cate Blanchett's latest vain-glorious attempt to grab a Best Actress Oscar with Joe Wright in something called Indian Summer, which sounds like a textbook, shameless piece of period piece Oscar-begging that even Merchant Ivory might consider too obvious.

I am guessing Skin isn't getting distribution because it's not very good?

Saw it in Toronto last year and it was basically one cliche after the next.

Okonedo did what she could with it, but the direction and the script and the other actors are all so mediocre that her hard work is ultimately done in.

At my press screening, people were walking out, in droves, throughout.

I maintain that something like this could do well on the small screen. The producers should try a cable network or perhaps even Lifetime, where the movie will get seen and there will be some kind of buzz for Okonedo. The big screen is not for this film.

Happy birthday Barbara Stanwyck!

Anon, yes i thought Nathaniel would be DYING to post Renee's return to boresville. (Does anyone actually want to see this?!?) Though Indian Summer could turn out well if they get two male actors as strong as Blanchett.

the geeks never saw others movies except comic/geek movies so they don't know Scarlet Johansen was hot and good actress in "Lost in translation"or "ghost world". They think she only is Green Lantern /deadpool actor's wife.
what do you want they love Megan Fox!

Johansson just keeps falling lower and lower in my book. I just don't know what people see in her. She bores the hell out of me. These pictures of her as the Black Widow just reinforces what i already believe. A leather catsuit and red hair does not make her into the Black Widow. Dress a boring actress anyway you like, but it still doesn't change the fact that it is still the same boring actress under those layers of costume.

I can't seem to get past this uninspired choice. Was Milla Jovovich busy making another Resident Evil movie or something?

and what in the hell is up with that hair?

Nathaniel, I feel your pain. I worked at a Barnes and Noble bookstore a couple years ago and I had to dress up as Peter Rabbit on several occasions among other costumed characters. that was no fun

It's the red hair! It's the red hair!

I'm reminded of the part in Rocky IV where the announcer goes, "The Russian is cut! The Russian is cut!"

The PopWatch blog on EW.com put a faceoff between ScarJo and Rachel Nichols in G.I. Joe and there are a lot of people going either way. I think the dealbreaker is whether ScarJo tries a Russian accent appropriate to the character. I'm cringing at the very thought...

BOO to Big Bang Theory not getting a Best Comedy nom. It is the best sitcom on tv, bar none.

But YAY for Jim Parsons. I went to school with him, but he was a grad student and I was a lowly undergrad.

Johansson with a Russian accent? I just had flashbacks to her accent in the The Prestige. Make it stop.

Couldn't agree more on Maggie's scene in Away We Go. I love her but that scene is abysmally written and directed and simply made me angry.

HAHAHHAHAA...... that iron man cover, its a big hair fest!

I agree too on Maggie's bit in "Away We Go." Unbearable even though I absolutely love her. It was matched in awfulness by that scene with the miscarriage themed pole dancing. Was it just me or was the last half of viewing this movie one endless cringe?

Agree with Dereck. Johansson bores the heck out of me. I don't even find her that hot. Overrated in both talent and looks.

Too bad Emily Blunt was busy. Not HER as Black Widow i would go see.

*Now HER as Black Widow i would go see.

I don't have a huge problem with Scarlett, although to me she is a boring actress and I've seen Lost in Translation.

Red Hair doesn't suit her at all IMO. Emily Blunt and Kirsten Dunst look better with Red hair.

What exactly does Hot mean???
She has a nice body, but her face is kind of plain. I mean I don't think she's ugly, just not pretty.

Uh ... isn't Scarlett Johansson a natural redhead? Not quite that intense a shade, but still.

The forces of Nerdcore like to think that their first priority is the integrity of films, but they're just as subject to their libidos as the rest of us.

Maybe more... hell, how else do you explain "Species"?

Derreck said...

kel: i never saw Emily Blunt in the role, but i always thought she was an interesting choice. i was disappointed she couldn't do it.

Anon: i thought Kirsten Dunst looked 10 times better with the Spider-Man red hair.

robert... i'm totally pro libido ;)

but i'd be the same way if a beautiful actor was miscast in something under the grounds that there are presumably hundreds of beautiful people you could choose for any given part and if you need someone that's some degree of famous... maybe 30 per role, depending on the role.

So, being beautiful is a given!

that's why i don't get the turnaround in buzz. she was not unbeautiful before!
