Movie Stars For EMMY

Since the EMMYs have 2,741 categories, we only focus on two things: first, how our favorite shows did and second, which big screen stars other than La Pfeiffer (she's always there with her television kingpin husband) will show up. Which of them got nominated for their small screen sojourns whether longform or more movie-like?

Speaking of which...

Drew Barrymore on the set of Going the Distance

Yes, you, Drew. But you knew she knew (everyone knew) that her affecting work in Grey Gardens as "Little Edie" was going to make the grade. "Big Edie" Jessica Lange also won a nomination for the narrative feature based on -- but also sort of jumping off from and commenting on -- the famous beloved documentary of the same name. I hope to have an interview with their director here soon.

Before we get to the rest of the big screen folks, here's the nominees in the big two categories

Big Love finally gets recognized. Strangely none of the actors do.

outstanding drama series (7 nominees. eep)
  • Big Love (HBO)
  • Breaking Bad (AMC)
  • Damages (FX)
  • Dexter (SHOWTIME)
  • House (FOX)
  • Lost (ABC)
  • Mad Men (AMC)
No Friday Night Lights or Battlestar Galactica (sigh) but we expected as much. Some shows just aren't in the EMMY wheelhouse no matter how strong they are. The surprise here is definitely the exclusion of previous winner "24" which the EMMY's have previously loved in all its torture-approving glory.

Interesting note:
Mad Men hogged 80% of the writing nominations with only Lost able to slip in there for the fifth slot. BOO! Rose Byrne's category fraud for Damages (she's competing in supporting) probably caused the snubbing of Marcia Gay Harden for that same show. Byrne is *not* a supporting actress on that show. Hello, it's a two-hander. I actually bet she has more screen time than Glenn Close not to mention that the story is usually told through her perspective.

outstanding comedy series (also 7 nominees)
  • 30Rock
  • Entourage
  • Family Guy
  • Flight of the Conchords
  • How I Met Your Mother
  • The Office
  • Weeds
Two and a Half Men's reign of terror ends at last. Rejoice. BOO: No Pushing Daisies again. TV did not do right by their wonderful "gone too soon" series. YES: Especially good news here for the other Krak addicts out there: Jane Krakowski wins her first EMMY nomination after multiple merciless snubbings. Interesting note: 3 time consecutive supporting actor winner Jeremy Piven is not nominated for Entourage. Does this mean Neil Patrick Harris finally gets the gold?

Movie actors for EMMY
The following races mostly lean towards silver screen thespians. This time they're competing for that gold and winged woman trophy rather than the naked guy with the sword.

Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie pits Oscar winner Kevin Kline (Cyrano de Bergerac on PBS) against Kevin Bacon (Taking Chance on HBO), frequent supporting MVP Brendan Gleeson (Into the Storm on HBO) and Oscar nominees Sir Ian McKellen (King Lear) and Kenneth Branagh (Taking Chance) are all competing for . Hey, no fair: Kiefer Sutherland's TV character Jack Bauer from "24" somehow slipped into this category, spoiling its silver screen style.

Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie features the Grey Gardens girls alongside screen divas Sigourney Weaver (Prayers for Bobby) and Shirley Maclaine (Coco Chanel). EMMY & TV regular Chandra Wilson (Accidental Friendship) rounds out that category.

Lead Actress in a Drama Series usually contains a few movie stars who have migrated to the small screen once Hollywood stopped offering them amazing lead roles. That's the big screen's loss, obviously. Holly Hunter (Saving Grace), Glenn Close (Damages) and Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters) are competing once again with TV stars like Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men). Moss's character Peggy Olson is wonderful but she really should be competing in the supporting category where everyone but Jon Hamm belongs since the cast is so huge and screen time is limited. The other fine Mad Men women, January Jones and Christina Hendricks, were once again snubbed. This category is often frustrating. The brilliant layered work of Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights) goes unnoticed again and Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica) four season snubbing for her work as President Laura Roslyn will surely have to go down in television history as one of the worst 10 offenses that EMMY ever committed.

Miscellania Oscar winners Ernest Borgnine (ER), Ellen Burstyn (Law & Order), Dianne Wiest (In Treatment) and Oscar nominees Brenda Blethyn (Law & Order) and Gena Rowlands (Monk) are all competing in Guest or Supporting acting categories.

Bonus. What's the best category this year?
My vote for the strongest category this year goes to either Lead or Supporting Actress in a Comedy both of which have really strong lineups with no bad apples spoiling the bunch by snubbing far superior work. The nominees are...

Toni Toni Toni and Toni. Do you think she'll win?

Lead Actress in a Comedy
  • Julia Louis Dreyfuss, The New Adventures of Old Christine
  • Christina Applegate, Samantha Who?
  • Sarah Silverman, The Sarah Silverman Show
  • Tina Fey, 30Rock
  • Toni Collette, The United States of Tara
  • Mary Louise Parker, Weeds
Supporting Actress in a Comedy
  • Kristin Chenowith, Pushing Daisies
  • Amy Poehler, SNL
  • Kristin Wigg, SNL
  • Jane Krakowski, 30Rock
  • Vanessa Williams, Ugly Betty
  • Elizabeth Perkins, Weeds
What say ye? How well did EMMY do this year?

P.S. You can download a complete list of nominees here but be warned, it's 40 pages long.

Ah, so nice to finally see Weeds' name on the list for Best Comedy Series! It's been a long time coming, but too bad the nomination had to come for what is arguably their weakest season. :(

It's a shame that Emmys nominate every year the same people, when for example they constantly snub the wonderful cast of LOST. Every actor or actress is PERFECT in that show, but only Michael Emerson, cause he plays the villain, gets nominated. Matthew Fow, Evangeline Lilly, Naveen Andrews, Elizabeth Mitchell, Henry Ian Cusick, xtc. xtc. xtc.

SO SNUB!!!!!!!!!!!

Victor S said...

The Supporting actress in a comedy series nominees is the proof that there's still hope in this world: Chenoweth, Krakowski, Wiig, Poehler, Williams and Perkins.

Claire said...

I agree. LOST should have more nominations. 5th season was SPECTACULAR in every sense (acting, filming, writing...).

Bah, this all means LOST will and MUST sweeeeeep so baaaaaad next 2010 with LAST SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH yay!!!!!! I can see Matthew Fow winning, same on Michael Emerson and Evangeline Lilly!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I myself will be disappointed if someone like Vanessa Williams wins the Emmy for her ***** performance in UGLY BETTY instead of Elizabeth Perkins or Krakowski!

Three Random Thoughts:

1. Guest Actress in a Comedy Series looks amazing (Betty White, Gena Rowlands, Tina Fey, Jen Aniston, Elaine Stritch and Christine Baranski!)
2. Dr Horrible gets an Emmy nom!
3. Cheno got some Pushing Daisies Emmy love!

NATHANIEL R said...

ramification no of course not. she was snubbed again.

victor s yes i love all of them. Well, I don't love Williams exactly but this season... since my friends watch it... i ended up seeing a lot of it and realized she was doing more with the evil bitch part than i thought she was.

Wow, True Blood got nothing? Not that it really deserved a lot but I hope that it doesn't turn into a Buffy situation when it really starts to get good.

Things that make you go hmm..No Katherine Heigl, no Jeremy Piven, no Anna Paquin, no 2 1/2 men in best comedy? Makes you think they're opening your eyes more but then Simon Baker? No January Jones?

Jane Krakowski! Jack McBrayer! Tracy Morgan! I guess his Golden Globe speech worked!

Ryan T. said...

I still need to process the list, but as much as I like 30 Rock and Mad Men, the Emmys seem to have already coronated them. Geez. 8 of 10 of the writing nominations? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

And with Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, and Jon Hamm getting nominated in other places, the Emmy's sure will be dominated by those two shows. Again, not saying they are not worthy, but COME ON.

I'm VERY VERY happy to see How I Met Your Mother FINALLY nominated for Best Comedy Series and in turn to see NPH nominated again. Piven is not here this year, but he's going up against two performers from 30 Rock. Sigh.

And while I think Lost should get 100 nominations including every other supporting nominations, I'm just glad they nominated it for Drama Series and recognized Emerson again.

Shows I'm going to miss: Pushing Daisies gets five nominations including one for the lovely Chenoweth (no Lee Pace... sad) and Battlestar Galactica gets six nominations including Directing (none for the big awards... even sadder).

Victor S said...

I don't exactly love Vanessa Williams too, but at least they gave the nomination to someone who is doing a good job with her evil über bitch character.
And since she is my least favorite of the nominees, I now pronounce her the favorite for the win. It always works that way.

Andrew David said...

Oh, damn it all to hell.

NATHANIEL R said...

nono i'm guessing true blood is just a little too outre for EMMY. It is definitely on its own wavelength (what to compare it to?) and shows like that with few rare glorious exceptions (mad men) generally get overlooked.

i'm fairly certain that the Piven and Heigl snubs are due to their thorny reputations of late.

mB yeah that guest actress cateogry is like gay fantasy... old loudmouth broads and funny ladies galore.

Scene-Stealers said...

I am happy to see Battlestar Galactica get some love and I'm happy with a lot of the other noms, but...I hate to complain...NOTHING for The Shield? Walton Goggins and Michael Chiklis were riveting in the series' 7th and final season. For a cop drama, The Shield was always unusual in that it was 5% procedural, 95% character-based. The final arc of the story stemmed from an incident in the very first episode and in a TV season that saw some pretty sad series wrap-ups (BSG, I'm looking at you), The Shield's finale was satisfying in a cruel and tragic way. I expected nothing less from this sadly overlooked show. Oh well.

Ramification said...

Vanessa Williams deserved a win maybe last year, she does a lot more with the character than what is written for her. Jan K for the win!

Andrew David said...

I can't even be bothered to watch this year. They had one last chance to nominate at least ONE member of the absolutely perfect ensemble that is BSG, and they blew it.

Henry said...

Battlestar Galactica doesn't get anything in the writing categories either? Man, does the show get shafted! I thought "The Oath" or "Revelations" or "Faith" or "Sometimes a Great Notion" could get a nod. Almost any episode of the final season could have been nominated.

On the same token for Pushing Daisies in the Comedy Writing category.

Ben said...

As everyone else seems to be, I'm disappointed by the snubbing of January Jones, Christina Hendricks and Mary McDonnell.

I love The United States Of Tara but, for me, Toni Collette is the weak link. Her performance, particularly when she's playing Alice, feels very mannered. Rosemarie DeWitt and Keir Gilchrist provided such sterling supporting work that it's a real shame they're not up.

ER's finale deserved a writing nomination as well. Season 15 showed a real upswing in quality after four very so-so seasons and the finale was excellent on almost every level, serving as an understated throwback to Season 1 with just the right amount of sentimentality, good guest spots and stand-out performances from the regular cast.

Deborah said...

Darling, it's Elisabeth Moss.

The best category is obviously the drama writing, with 80% going to the right show. Duh.

I'm happy to see Jack McBrayer get a nomination, his screen time is so small I never thought he'd get considered.

I really don't understand 'House' repeatedly getting best drama nominations. Hugh Laurie is really good, but that's about it.

I am a Lost obsessive as well, but I'm not nuts enough to think Matthew Fox or Evangeline Lilly are Emmy material.

Terry O'Quinn and Elizabeth Mitchell, though? Outrageous snubs.

Namaste said...

No Elizabeth Mitchell. No John Noble. No David Duchovny. I think I'm gonna cry.

And why does Mariska Hargitay get a nomination EVERY YEAR??

I'm happy for Ian McKellen, Michael Emerson and Jane Krakowski though.

@Peter: Terry didn't submit himself.

Bernardo said...

No Boston Legal or James Spader. Makes me very very very sad. :(

NATHANIEL R said...

namaste i don't get the Mariska thing either. I think she's perfectly fine in the role but awards should be for THE BEST and considering who they have to keep snubbing to include her...

If I'm not mistaken Marcia Gay Harden (The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler), Kevin Kline (Cyrano de Bergerac) and Ellen Burstyn (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit)now have the chance to get the "triple crown" of acting.

I'm really glad Sarah Silverman's humor isn't too refined for the Emmys.

I hope Toni Collette wins. She is great in United States.

I'm really excited for the Grey Gardens girls too. Drew gave her finest performance. I knew she had it in her.

So, I heard somewhere that Viola Davis was joining the cast of United States of Tara. I is excited.

I think the strongest category is probably Lead Actor in Drama. And my vote would go for one of the finest TV performance in a long time....Bryan Cranston. he totally makes me forget that he is Malcolm's Dad. However the show is dark and fierce, and a lot of people don't really want to watch it.

BIG BOO for Family Guy. What are they thinking? Seth MacFarlane buying them out with DVD Box Set?

VonCastle said...

Sad my absolute favourite Desperate Housewive, Marcia Bree, didn't make the cut again. And hoping for Chandra the scene stealer to finally get that elusive Emmy. Happy for Krak.

In overall find the competition less predictable (good) but also lower quality in average (bad).

I like Anna Paquin but not in True Blood, the accent is terrible... but only saw half season 01 yet, maybe it'll change. True blood is really more of a manly showcase, all 4 are... yummy. Love the edge of it but it is not Emmy material (except Lois Smith).

Lost for me is like Twin Peaks... it started so well...

Nominations I'm happy with
- Flight of the Conchords for Comedy Series (Best Comedy on television currently, besides Curb Your Enthusiasm)

- Sarah Silverman For Best Actress in a Comedy (She's hysterical and commands her show impressively)

- Jane Krakowski for Featured Comedy Actress (what took them so long?)

- Kristin Wiig for Featured Comedy Actress (love her. I think she's actually funnier than Amy Poehler)

SNUBS
- How could they find it in their souls to nominate Jermaine but not Bret?
- Why is there no love for the Flight of the Conchords supporting cast? Kristen Schaal and Rhys Darby should have won those awards already.

Lead Actress in a Comedy is definitely the best category here. I'd only swap out Louis-Dreyfus for Poehler's layered work on Parks & Recreation. But Poehler still got recognized and she's guarenteed the nomination next year, so I can let it slide.

Worst Offense of the Year..... Family Guy gets the honor of being only the 2nd Animated Series ever nominated for Best Comedy Series but 20 y/o The Simpsons which was brillian and more than qualified for the nomination during it's first TEN years never has. Huge crime. I even like Family Guy, but not even its best episode compares to a decent episode of the Simpsons during the first half of its run. Oh well. Seth Macfarlene pretty much owns FOX now so what can you do?

Ellen Burstyn andMarcia Gay Harden both nominated.

We might have another Triple Crown winner on our hands.

PennyBlossoms said...

BOO to Big Bang Theory not getting a Best Comedy nom. It is the best sitcom on tv, bar none.

But YAY for Jim Parsons. I went to school with him, but he was a grad student and I was a lowly undergrad.

I'm shocked for Mary McDonnell too not only for Battlestar Gallactica but also for Grey's where she played a cardiothoracic surgeon with Asperger's syndrome.

Guess you were right Nathaniel... Some may have not liked Heigl's diva ways... And the rest must think she doesn't deserve to be recognised a second time (she has one already)... Basically she's cleared the way for one of the Grey's gals... Probably Chandra Wilson... Although I prefer Oh's far superior work...

Cable running strong... sweeping almost every Drama series' places...

So glad How I Met Your Mother has finally been recognised... And Neil Patrick Harris set (probably) for a win (Piven is suffering from the same thing as Heigl) I just can't see why Josh Radnor from How I Met can't get recognition too... Charlie Sheen AGAIN, Shalhoub AGAIN... Grrr...

Mariska Hargitay... SERIOUSLY? And where is January Jones? And even Sally Field... She was one of the weakest links in Brothers&Sisters this season, Calista Flockhart kicked her ass... And Rachel Griffiths...

Simon Baker... Boston Legal... I can't understand.

SO GLAD Tina Fey got a nomination for her SNL'S Sarah Palin! She's walking home with that statue...

No love for Californication? Could it be because of Duchovny's sex addiction announcement?

Not enough love for Lost or Grey's (Grey's season 3 and 4 were not good - the series jumped the shark - and season 5 didn't begin well but it ended in such a blast I thought it was possible to earn a nomination...) House being loved over and over again is something I can't understand either.

No love for Friday Nights Lights and BSG... (altough it was to be expected)

No Justin Chambers for Grey's? Instead we have Shatner AGAIN for his boring performance in Boston Legal AND Clemenson? GOD! Chambers brought in his A-game this season...

The Shield being ignored too...

I can't understand the Academy of TV Arts and Science sometimes...

Cinesnatch said...

I disagree about your assessment that Moss is supporting in Mad Men. Her role isn't as *central* as Jon Hamm's, but she still commands more of the show than the rest of the cast outside of Hamm.

Peter Chan said...

Some Notes:

- Love the 'Flight of the Conchords' nomination and even more so, the Jemaine Clement acting nomination.

- Elisabeth Moss! That scene with Pete in the season finale still gives me chills.

- Where's the FNL love?

- 'How I Met Your Mother' over 'The Big Bang Theory' is a bit of a surprise, but I'll take it.

I don't watch much TV that isn't MasterChef, but I do love Kyra Sedgwick in that role.

But, as per usual, even when the Emmy's decide to be different they up the same (and what's with the seven nominees?)

Tory said...

I think there are some typical nominees and not so typical which is great. I LOVE the Kristin Wiig nomination. I laugh in everything she's in. She is truly funny and should win. I think Drew might win because Jessica, though she was fantastic and charming and the best actress in the movie, Drew will get it because this is her first time doing something hard. I thought she was great and really got the character in her younger years.

I'm incredibly happy for Weeds, and the emmy for comedy actress should go to Mary Loise Parker. Tina has two, well three I think for being a writer for the show, and thought I love her and she deserves every award because she'e incredibly talented I think it should go to Mary Louise. She's amazing on the show. It will be like a Debra Messing year where she totally deserved it and she got nominated every single year for nearly the whole season.

and Kyra should win for dramatic actress in a series. she's been nominated like for so long now, and though I don't watch the show, I feel the previews I see, she carries it. It's her due.

Though I can't believe Jane didn't win for Malcolm in the middle. She deserved to win, but it just wasn't her time, and then the show ended.

Man I'm going on and on...I'll stop :-)

Tory said...

just another thought.... I'm so happy Piven didn't get nominated. Though he's talented, I feel as if its like a doris roberts thing. it's like STOP giving to her and give it to Kim Cattral who's amazingly perfect for samantha. She was a true coimic gem. thought i was excited for cynthia nixon, because she was the best actress on the show, though I LOVE all four of them.

So Niel gets it! give it tot the gay guy who plays a straight guy for once. Plus he deserved it for doogie Howser.

He's a triple threat and he's crazy talented. Plus he's beautiful and has a wonderful voice. I love that he's out and successful. He's truly a special guy and wonderful actor!

"Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series" has got to be, yearly, the most boringly predictable, uninventive category. It's just the same names over and over. Six slots and no room for McDonnell or Paquin.

Miko said...

Family Guy got nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series over The Simpsons because Family Guy'a producers had the guts to subit the show for that category. The Simpsons and South Park (which are shows exponentially better than Family Guy) chose to submit their shows in the Animated Series Less-Than-1 Hour category.

January Jones is the weak link in "Mad Men". Her casting is quite baffling. She has no personality - listen to the DVD commentaries - and that comes across on screen. Where is Vincent Kartheiser's nomination? He along with Hamm are mesmerizing to watch.

I'm going to give some love to Mariska Hargitay. She absolutely deserved her win and is the only actress playing a cop that merits tuning in for. You may disagree that she shouldn't be nominated that many times in a row, but Moss does not belong in the lead category and Sally Field has become insufferable.

Anonymous said...

I guess I'm the only one that's thrilled that Anna Paquin was snubbed. I like the actress but her performance in True Blood is entirely sub-par. And that accent is horrendous. If keeping her out of the lineup means Mariska Hargitay grabs another nomination for her nothing turn on SVU then so be it.

My picks:

Lead Actress (C)-Mary Louise Parker
Lead Actor (C)-Steve Carell
Lead Actress (D)-Holly Hunter
Lead Actor (D)-Gabriel Byrne

Supporting Actor (D)- William Hurt
Supporting Actress (C)- Jane Krakowski
Supporting Actress (D)- Hope Davis

but whether or not you believe Paquin deserved it (i don't really have a strong opinion either way) Hargitay should not be in there.

i mean the women of Battlestar Galactica blow most of these women away... and they have a lot more complicated character arcs to sell.

makes me so mad that actors don't seem to watch that show.

Anonymous said...

Anon 5:54 here, Nathaniel I'm sure the Battlestar Galactica cast deserve some kind of recognition, after all everyone seems to think so, but not having seen the show (I know, I know) I just can't say. My comment was based on my own viewing patterns (though I don't really watch L&O: SVU) and as such I see Hargitay as worthier of her nom than Paquin would have been.

NATHANIEL R said...

understood. I'm not always sure that Paquin makes the best choices as an actress but i can see her making them (rather than just coasting) ... which is something i tend to like in performers.

i've never thought that the acting was bad as far as the leads go (sometimes the guest stars. ewww) on these plentiful L&O shows (I've seen a few episodes of each here and there) i've just never understood how the roles are interesting enough to give the actor enough to do to be even worthy of acting awards (which i tend to think should come from difficult roles or roles wherein the actor adds a lot to it... which might be the case here if i'm feeling generous since i've only seen a few episodes)

That was cold what they did to Jeremy Piven! Sushigate doesn't have a damn thing to do with Entourage! He's won your award three times, his show is nominated in best comedy series, and his costar was nodded too. That's straight up high school popularity contest BS.\

I do like the nominations for the most part, expect the lack of love for "True Blood", "Big Love" only getting one nod and nothing for its actors, the best performance of the year being snubbed (Alison Pill), and "Family Guy" polluting the comedy series category. But with "30 Rock" leading the way, and very deserving nods for Aaron Paul, Mary-Louise Parker, Drew Barrymore, Dianne Wiest, Glenn Close, Holly Hunter, Bryan Cranston, Tina Fey (x2), Kyra Sedgwick, Beau Bridges, Steve Martin, Chandra Wilson, Rainn Wilson, Kevin Dillon, Hugh Laurie, Jemaine Clement, etc., it'll be a fun night for me in September (unless Shatner wins, then ugh).
