Supporting Actress Smackdown 2009

I haven't participated in a "Smackdown" over at me pal StinkyLulu's place for ages. What better time to correct that than during Oscar season? It won't surprise you that Mo'Nique has my vote for Precious but see how many hearts (on a scale of five) each nominated performance gets from myself, StinkyLulu, and the rest of the panel and what we had to say about Maggie Gyllenhaal, Penélope Cruz and the Up in the Air girls, too.

I LOVE that Marion took second! Only problem is no Anna nomination! Ah well.

no, Marion took bronze. 3rd place.

WHOA. Wait, I think I'm done talking for the day. I just confused Bronze and Silver. Oh boy. It's been a long day...

I beg to differ on "who got robbed" in supporting actress. With all those names, you still forget to mention the real tragedy: no SAMANTHA MORTON. This was a baffling disappointment on every level: precursor expectations (BFCA nom, which is more than Maggie got), representation for her film (people clearly saw saw The Messenger and many expected her to do better than it did), and most importantly, actual performance quality. She deserved to be there. She had no internal competition. And she has a history of slipping into the final five without warning. So I was really expecting it to happen. And it didn't ; )

I don't get it. How can you see that movie and nominate Woody while passing over Samantha? I'd say "because he's famous", but that doesn't really fly, since we know AMPAS knows her and likes her. It's a mystery.

Also, I'm pretty sure 39 stars is a record. Wow.

For me, the medalists would be (without having to think much at all): Mo'Nique, Farmiga, and Morton, in that order.

Yeah and seriously, Jude, the olympics are HAPPENING RIGHT NOW. Haven't you been seeing medal ceremonies for the last two weeks? No excuse ; )

Whoa, oops. That wink after "and it didn't" was supposed to be a sad face.

Adam k., that's the worst part hahahaha. How many medal ceremonies have I sat through to get to this point of mixing up Bronze and Silver. I guess I just like Bronze more than Silver...

Jude... it's that medal that counts. Not the color! We don't discriminate against the color blind.

How thrilling that Marion went from "what's all the fuss about" to Bronze Medalist in just two years! Glad you've seen the light ;)

I think I need to re-watch The Hurt Locker. When I saw it, I knew it was one of the Greats, but it didn't really hook me the way a lot of other movies did. Which is just a way of saying, I liked Anthony Mackie, but I'm always surprised to see the love for him. Not that I disagree with the Silver Medal, just that I look at that and think, "Oh, if only I hadn't seen you in a distasteful theater."

Also, re: Smackdown...we match 100%. Both of us run the gamut of hearts, and gave the same ratings to the same performances. WEIRD.

NATHANIEL R said...

that is weird and a true coincidence since the smackdowners aren't allowed to see each others ballots before the posting!

Anthony Mackie took your silver? YEEEEEEEESSSSSS!

Mo'Nique killed it in the smackdown! Good for her. I would have given a bit more credit to Anna Kendrick for what she contributed to "Up in the Air." Sadly, what you all said about Maggie Gyllenhaal was spot on. Of all the things to nominate her for after all these years, this is what they land on. Oh wells.

You raise a very interesting question: Who would win if Precious hadn't been released this year?

I don't see either Up in the Air girl taking it. Maybe Julianne Moore, or someone who wasn't nominated.

I'd have to think they'd go with the more-honored "UITA" girl with no Mo around, so Anna Kendrick. She amassed more precursor wins than Vera Farmiga did, and she's the PYT that this category adores. For someone who wasn't even nominated here to somehow win with no frontrunner present is unlikely to me. If Julianne Moore or Melanie Laurent or whoever made it in here over who was actually nominated, they would be straddling fifth place (unless a very big deal was made about Moore's losing streak perhaps). Farmiga, Cruz, and sadly Gyllenhaal would all be ahead of the new nominee, and I think that would pave the way for Anna Kendrick to win.

I would nom kruger over cruz, kendrick, gyllenhaal and laurent.

I must say in her defence that maggie g had one great scene in crazy heart when she tells bad blake how she feels when she hears his song but this felt like a glenn close 1980's nom to me.

I liked Maggie G in Crazy Heart. The character had problems, but I blame it more on the screenplay. I'm not saying it was a great performance, and I don't think she deserves the nomination, but she wasn't as bad as people make it out to be and I'm happy she's finally an Oscar Nominee.
