1. A Star Is Born - Judy Garland
2. The Magnificent Ambersons - Agnes Moorehead
3. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg - Catherine Deneuve
4. Double Indemnity - Barbara Stanwyck
5. The Fabulous Baker Boys - Michelle Pfeiffer

Um, all of these leading ladies have been nominated for but have never won a competitive Oscar?

I'll make another connection: all of the leading males of each of these films has never won a competitive Oscar.

all of these actresses have been nominated for competive Oscar and never won.

None were directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, Alfred Hitchcock, Sam Mendes, or Stanley Kubrick.

Career best or should have won the Oscar for this performance or how the hell she lost??

oh I am curious! I am speculating but i haven't seen all these films (the fabulous baker boys) so i've drawn no conclusion! not sure if its plot related or if its the background of the film that has brought them all together. ?
but ill give it a guess n e way..
The leading woman all lead their male co-stars/screen love interests in the lurch, depressing circumstances arise.

I'm not sure about career best..
Umbrellas was not Deneuve's best..
In fact, I love the movie, but I don't really care for her performance..

Well let's not forget everyone was dubbed in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. There's only so much she could do by lip synching all of her lines

badmotherfucker got it right away. Well... part of it at least. But there's more!

and Robert made another connection... but I didn't even know that one.

there's more...

Edith Head did the costumes for them all?

The Z said...

That Guy is also correct, but in a "no duh" way.

The Z said...

And Edith Head died in 1981, so that guess won't work.

The Z said...

1. "A Star is Born" - 6 Oscar noms, 0 wins

2. "The Magnificent Ambersons" - 4 noms, 0 wins

3. "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" - 5 noms, 0 wins

4. "Double Indemnity" - 7 noms, 0 wins

5. "The Fabulous Baker Boys" - 4 noms, 0 wins

SO... each had at least 4 Oscar nominations and didn't win any of those noms.
