Potty Break

OK. I'm having a great time with a bunch of friends over watching the Globes (the Globes are always the funnest) but I hate these tributes and I always take a breather during them.

Impressions so far...
1. Sad that M$B looks good for major Oscar play. Because I think Sideways and The Aviator are much better films. But oh, well. What are you gonna do...
2. Annette Bening unfortunately didn't do herself any favors with that weird robotic acceptance speech. I can finally see Swank winning the Oscar which I am. NOT. happy about at all. Ick. She's good in M$B but her role is hardly as challenging as her major competitors. Ugh. Bening, Winslet, Staunton, Thurman all have more multidimensional and trickier roles to play but Swank has the benefit of a likeable character and likeable goes a long way for the majority of voters who don't think a lot about the actor's technique, difficulty of role, etc...
3. Happy for Clive Owen and Natalie Portman both of whom were really fine in Closer. I think I predicted one of them but I can't remember which, Clive?
4. Blue is the color of the dresses this season.
5. Jamie Foxx is as much of a lock to win the Oscar as Julia Roberts was for Erin Brockovich.

My friends are in the other room screaming about how bad a lot of the Robin Williams movies were. Gotta go back now that that part is thankfully ending.

Aw... I like Robin Williams... maybe it's because I saw all his old "kiddy" movies as a kid (I'm still pretty young yet) but I remember liking them a lot. He was good in Awakenings, and Good Will Hunting... and I was a kid when Aladdin came out so I liked his Genie, too. Although in retrospect, Mrs. Doubtfire was a blatant rip-off of Tootsie (and the "Uncle Frank and Aunt Jack" scenes weren't handled very delicately at all... ah well) and I was disappointed by my recent first viewing of the Birdcage (way too obvious over-the-top farce). But I still like Hook (he says as he hides his face sheepishly)... does that make me a tool?

I can't believe that Hilary Swank is going to win again-anyone, I repeat, anyone would be better than her-come on Annette, Imelda, Uma, Kate, call your publicists and start schmoozing with the Academy.

That said, glad to see The Aviator taking Best Pic (let's just hope the Academy follows suit and finally gives Martin Scorsese a trophy). I'd really like to see House of Flying Daggers pick up a trophy or two as well at the Oscars-it's fantastic.

Oh, and Nathaniel, you can't hear this enough-great site!

Agreed that it's getting boring to watch Jamie Foxx win stuff. It's just become so preordained. I liked Collateral and haven't yet seen Ray, but Collateral is a lead and Ray seems like yet another standard biopic... and though I like Jamie, seeing him win all this and be double and triple and quadruple-nommed at everything is like watching the cool kid in school parade himself around and be adored by everyone for it all the time... kind of like, oh, (Nathaniel said it) Julia Roberts in 2000. But that's Hollywood, right? Sadly. And his speeches, though genuine-sounding, also seem so standard and so tailor made to generate further noms for the film. Whatever, we know Jamie's on top of the world, let's move on...

I'm having a mixed reaction with the Globes. After seeing all of the nominated film, I'm happy for some of the winners ("The Aviator", Foxx, DiCaprio, and Payne & Taylor), but Carradine and Blanchett were more deserving than Owen and Portman (don't get me wrong, they were both great). And either Thurman or Staunton should have had it over Swank (who, once again, was also very good). I'm crossing my fingers for Scorsese.

Was it more or did Hotal Rwanda seem to had the most support in the room? Perhaps and upset for Don and Rwanda come SAGs?

Hey, seriously now, what's so bad about Robin Williams? He may be kind of overpraised, but is he really so bad? I enjoy him.
But yeah, what the hell happened with Bening? She may have just killed her chances of beating Swank to the oscar, which is really too bad, cause she seems like the only one who could've done it... now all those people who predicted Swank early will be proven right. Swank definitely came off as "the winner".

Yeah, I don't get the hate for Robin Williams. I can understand how people can not like his outrageous stuff, but his dramatic work is just as good as anyone elses (I also like his comedic work - yes, even The Birdcage and Mrs. Doubtfire. They're fun, shut up!).

I still don't think the Academy will give Hilary a second Best Actress Oscar (to join the ranks of Bergman? Streep? Hepburn?), surely not! I still think Annette will pull it off... or possibly (if she's nominated) a surprise by Catalina Sandino Moreno. Possibly.

And, is it just me or did Jamie Foxx's speech remind anyone of (again) Julia Roberts' for Erin Brockovich? He seemed to be going on forever thanking everyone. It was alright for Julia who had finally won, but Foxx... well, his career hasn't exactly been filled with near-wins.

Just a couple of gossipy things:

Jamie Foxx: I wish that having a Black Man Win wasn't such a momentous occasion. That said, I liked Foxx' speech, and who am I, a white Jewish woman from NJ to weigh in on the emotional impact this win had, on the even of Martin Luther King's Birthday.

Clive Owen: DAMN, that is one damn fine piece of manflesh. Even more gorgeous out of character than in character. Why on earth is he not being considered for Bond? Better question, why on earth is this man not a megastar?

Kate Winslet: Gets more gorgeous every year.

Renee Zellweger: EAT SOMETHING!!!

DiCaprio: Get a voice coach, man! You still SOUND 16, even though now you look 18. But a smart move standing next to a bunch of tall guys so people can see you're taller than you seem on screen.
