Ya know, if Halle and Judi were taken out and replaced by Naomi and Tilda in 2001's best actress race, I would've been a very happy boy.

Alas, I can't wait for Tilda to actually make that Nico biopic. It'd be fascinating, no matter the quality, just to see Tilda try and be Nico for 2 hours.

Oh and The Deep End was so very good.

Wow. She is tall!

The Deep End gives me the chills every fucking time.

I was so utterly disappointed when I showed it to one of my classes and they hated it. (This was not a dumb class either.) I got angry at them. This is also why I'm afraid to show them other movies I love but know are hokey like, say, Rebel without a Cause. Then again, this semester's class seemed to have gotten Elephant, so who knows.

Sorry babe, I know this might seem blasphemy, but I just have to assert that Tilda is god. Julianna could be an archangel or something.

Whoa, The Boyfriend, her name is JULIANNE. With an E. I think your not knowing God's name will piss off Nathaniel more than any of your devotion to Tilda. Unless he thinks you meant Julianna Marguiles, in which case... I don't even know what he'll do (p.s. did you? omg)

Also, I have never seen The Deep End. Whoops. But I rather liked the 2001 best actress lineup. I didn't mind Judi. I liked that perf a lot... and without it, there would be no WINSLET in Iris, and that would be terrible. Halle I actually didn't mind either, until she f*ckin' WON. And I didn't even mind that until later when my taste improved.

The only real crime is the lack of Naomi, but that was less the voters' fault than the campaign's. And of course it was all Lynch anyway, and they had the good sense to recognize him.

Hey Nat, are you too disillusioned to even mention anything about the election tuesday? Yeah, me too.

Umm, it's The Last King of Scotland not The King of Scotland Yard.

Not on topic, but as this is the last post, I just want to ask more Cate Blanchett. It's ok not being a huge fan and covering Kate Winslet and Annete Bening, but come on! She has 3 movie roles this year, will be everywhere and not a single blog post?
Have you seen the Notes on a Scandal trailer?
The Good German trailer?
The Vogue cover?
The LA Times article?
The Babel b.o. numbers?
Bring on on the Blanchettism!

Joaquim,
I did post about Blanchett here.

but i'm sure i'll have more to say once Notes arrives and Babel, too.

Speaking of upcoming films: I'm really eager to know what you thought about the last three films you saw, Nathaniel. How long will you keep us waiting? :)

Mostly, it's because I myself found Babel a pointless, pretentious half-dud, and I'm hoping that at least *one* critic/blogger I regularly read will agree with me.

Aww, you loved "Volver"! I kinda know you would, but these are great news anyway :)

gah -i'm so predictable this year. ;) but, yeah, Volver is pretty sweet... I loved how quietly it did its job after the tour de force of the more obviously auteurial Bad Education last time.

But alas... i think this year is kinda sucky. nothing as good as last year's top films yet.

I thought "Volver" was better than any movie last year... melodrama transported to the 21st century, if you will (and one of the best comedies in a long time). It's also so rich in social commentary; just full, exciting work from a master in control.

I hadn't seen that post. It's really fascinating, especially the comments, even though I disagree with many of them.
Great work Nathaniel... Thanks!
