The Eyre Above

.
JA from MNPP here. If Nat were around he'd perhaps do one of his "Yes No Maybe So" posts for this, but I've got nothing but yes for this, the first trailer for Cary Fukunaga's adaptation of Jane Eyre, which isn't out until March. (via)
.

.
Fukunaga's Sin Nombre - and I know Nat agrees with me on this - is a wonderful film. Thrilling and moving and gorgeously shot. So no matter what he did next I'd have been paying attention, but an adaptation of Jane Eyre was not at all what I was expecting and that makes me even happier. Love it when a director throws a curve-ball. And the cast... the cast! Michael Fassbender, Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Judi Dench, Jamie Bell, Sally Hawkins and Michael Fassbender... drool.

And that trailer is just stunning. I posted a slew of screencaps over at MNPP in case you want to ogle it that way. What do we think?

The trailer does look great and so does the cast list, I'm just not sure we really need another Jane Eyre adaptation so soon after the BBC miniseries starring Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson (which was pretty much perfect). I'll still watch it though. ;)

Really interesting trailer. If the trailer isn't trying to trick us into thinking this is a period horror movie and actually is one, well, I'm sold. I'll possibly have to see both of Mia Wasikowska's movies next year.

I hope it's good cause I'll probably be seeing it in any case.

I don't know about the trailer though. The book is a sentimental favourite of mine so it just seems to me that they've strung every single dramatic scene together in a row with no breathing space. But I suppose that's what a trailer does.

I like that they're playing up the crazy gothic streak and it looks very pretty.

I hope the film has the dreamy moodiness of the poster as well as the dramatics of the trailer.

And Anna; Ruth Wilson was so good in that BBC adaptation!

How many times do they have to (re)do that movie?

What's with the horror feel? Cast looks great, but I'm not sure what they're trying to do with the plot.

You don't mess with 19th Century Brit Lit plots... unless you're adding zombies or sea monsters or whatnot.

OH MY GOD IM SO EXCITED.

Jane Eyre's one of my favorite books - I've read it dozens of times - and I've always disliked all of the movie adaptations. I just feel that so many of them have gotten Jane's character wrong. She isn't stoic and lifeless as she's so often played: the movies always invest more in Jane's view of Rochester, but fail to realize Jane as Rochester sees HER - a fiery, at times intense, coy, enigmatic, and completely unconventional woman. This movie seems actually interested in exploring the undercurrents of danger and eroticism that run within the book underneath its Victorian shell.

And you guys, the book is actually hella intense and dramatic so the gothic/horror feel is pretty accurate. Remember, the scenes in Jane Eyre include 1) a stabbing 2) a suicide 3) possibility of ghosts 4) multiple deaths 5) a hidden madwoman/arsonist 6) dramatic, breathless confrontations. The trailer feels pretty right to me.

SO excited.

If they tone them all the same, they bleed together and get stuffy, so the most recent one gets all the acclaim. I don't know if they have changed the plot, but the tone looks way different than Wyler's Wuthering Heights.

Evan- It doesn't look like they've messed with the plot. Everything in the trailer is from the book.

I actually hope they don't just try and cram every single thing from book into 2 hours. I thought the recent Pride and Prejudice was really successful in what it left out.

Show me more!!! Can't they fit any more of the movie into the preview. Why can't I see everything!!! Show us the ending too!!!!!

Am I am the minority of people that would like to be teased by a trailer, weren't they called teasers once?

The cinematography looks wonderful, and not in that period piece standard way. It reminded me Nestor Almendros' work in Truffaut's Two English Girls.

Jane Eyre is not only one of my favourite books ever, reading it as a young girl, it opened up the World of Literature to me. And also made me unhealhtily obsessed with brooding bachelors sporting their own mansions... ;)

I agree with anna that as faithful adaptations go, it's difficult, if not impossible, to top the recent BBC miniseries. That is why I am most excited about the gothic horror-elements of this trailer. As Caroline points out, the book is such a rich tapestry, and there are several possible interpretations of it. One would be that Mrs. Rochester is really just the dark side of Jane herself, the madness that she has to keep "locked away in the attic", and that has dramatic/fatal consequenses when let loose. Now THAT would make for an interesting movie! :)

I'm surprised, Jason, that you never mentioned the use of Suspiria music in the trailer.

It seems from the trailer they're focusing on the darker, gothic themes from the novel. I didn't catch the miniseries when it was out, so I look forward to this :)

Well, Pride & Prejudice proved that you needn't succumb when standing in the shadow of a miniseries that many consider perfect.

I wish we got more of the 'acting,' but I'm intrigued by its emphasis on the Gothic elements of the novel. It looks very dark and eerily melodramatic, which is a plus. Fassbender looks absolutely perfect, but I'm not sold on Wasikowska yet. She doesn't look quite at home in the more sinister setting. And of the few lines we get from her (the poor and little speech), it seems she's channeling too much Ruth Wilson, who was magnificent in the BBC miniseries. We'll see, though!
