DVD: Of Mice and Mame

N o w * o n * D V D

This & That
Longford -Jim Broadbent (yes) and Samantha Morton (amen!) co-star in this true story about a compassionate Earl and the jailed murderess he befriended. Presumably stupendous riveting acting follows. Adding it to the queue.
Reno 911! Miami -I have the screener DVD sitting right here -- hope to watch soon.
The Lucille Ball Collection -A box set of five of Lucy's movies but it doesn't include Douglas Sirk's Lured which is the only Lucy movie I've liked (among the few I've seen). It does include her offkey musical performance in Mame. One of my best friends loves this movie but I love him anyway. In his defence, "Bosom Buddies" is pretty bitchy/hilarious as musical comedy numbers go.
The Secret of Nimh -The only movie about rodents that I've ever enjoyed. I haven't seen it since the 80s. Does it hold up?

I'm Old
Bridge to Terabithia - I never knew what this was but apparently when it came out I was supposed to have known. Oops.

A Plague On All Our Houses
Miss Potter -This movie, about the author Beatrix Potter and her delightful picture books, gave me hives all over. Consider that a "proceed at your own risk" PSA. She Who Must Not Be Named gives another excruciating cutesyfussylookatme performance. Ewan Macgregor and Emily Watson are also onhand to conquer the itching. They're like a soothing oatmeal bath ... but why risk hives in the first place? [my initial outbreak]

In response to "I'm Old":

I'm disappointed at you Nathaniel. Very disappointed. By calendar dating, you should have read it sometime in school (the book came out in '78). I read it in 5th and it is one of the most beautiful and devastating things I have ever read. The movie? Moreso, and I don't know why. (The Greatest Child Actress in the World) AnnaSophia Robb* is incredible in it as Leslie, and Josh Hutcherson is great too as Jess, the two kids that meet and become friends and create the magical kingdom of Terabithia in the nearby forest.

AND NO THIS IS NOT A VISUAL EFFECTS/ACTION EPIC THING. THE ADVANCED SORCERY OF DISNEY HATES ME, SO THEY DID IT LIKE THAT TO CLOUD YOUR EYES AND CAUSE YOU DISAPPOINTMENT AT WHAT YOU THOUGHT IT WAS AND EMOTIONAL DISTRESS AT WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS.

I'll stop.

*I know you will NEVER see The Reaping, but AnnaSophia is pretty much a great reason to. Just sayin*

I love, love, love the Secret of Nimh-great book, great movie.

Also, are there any more reviews coming from the fundraiser a couple months back?

Broadbent just won the TV BAFTA for Longford, and he's super in it. Add to the queue with confidence.

I thought Terabithia was animated until I saw a trailer. That poster looks incredibly unlifelike.

anonymous --yes. there are still several reviews from the fundraiser to come. I did say that I couldn't promise when when i began the fundraiser but i realize it's been too long.

so i'm gonna try to do them all in the next few weeks.

otherwise nobody will ever donate again ;)

i want to do them --great movies and such -- but i went and got two new jobs to pay bills and got really behind.

blah blah. TMI i know...

"Longford" is an excellent film. Jim Broadbent, Samantha Morton, Andy Serkis, and Lindsay Duncan all deserve Emmy nominations for their performances. Watch the DVD ASAP (but it's a pricey HBO film -- watch it on HBO when it repeats instead).
