Poland Predix

Interesting read as always from David Poland. But I think he's overestimating: The Producers (too funny-haha and not enough substance for the faux-gravitas of true Oscar candidates) and Vengeance the Spielberg entry. Not that it might not be the frontrunner. But it also might have significant problems... We shall see.

I thought Spielberg named his 1972 Olympic diaster movie "Munich" instead of "Vengeance." Or am I just misreading your post?

Anywho, I think Dave Poland is probably the most reliable Oscar expert on the web. He seems to have his finger on the pulse of Hollywood.

And why the heck is Spielberg's opus the frontrunner when it hasn't even been shot yet? Because of the subject matter and director involved? Kinda reminds me of that "Crucible" debacle in '96...

Yes, it is called "Munich" as of this week.

And, to be fair, having Munich as a frontrunner before it's even shot is no different than, say, having Memoirs or All the King's Men as a frontruner, since we're not exactly going on advance screenings of those flicks yet.

Munich is a likely frontrunner because a lot of the elderly Jewish members of the academy vote for anything related to Jewish suffering regardless of quality. Look at all the past documentary and foreign film winners. It's like Bush having the bible belt in his pocket. You've got your core group and you can be a mindless warmonger and still get elected.

As for the rest of Poland's list... it's interesting but where is The White Countess? Has it been bumped to 2006 or did he just forget about it?

Isn't that a big assumption to make re: the Jewish bloc (if there is any) on the Academy board. I'm constantly hearing about this, but I have yet to see any real proof of this existing. And the past doc and forein film winners have less to do with Jews and more to do with the Holocaust. This film has nothing to do with that so I wonder about its chances. If the critics don't back it, the film will sink like a stone. Guess we'll have to see.

And Joe R.-

True, but the works you cited are based on best-selling novels that already carry a certain critical cachet. "Munich" only has el Spielbergo (who isn't as well-liked within the Academy as some people might think) and the subject matter, which, if handled wrongly, could be more of a liability than an asset.
