Oscars (So Far)

Isn't this Joaquin Phoenix joke already past its expiration date?

Awards so far (I'm at 100% at my predictions. Oh My God)

Best Short Film Toyland
Best Costume Design The Duchess
Best Art Direction Benjamin Button
Best Cinematography Anthony Dod Mantle Slumdog Millionaire

Overheard at my party "There is a long tradition of terrible musical numbers at the Oscars and you damn well better respect it!"

Natalie looks amazing.

I think the Hugh Jackman/Beyonce musical moment confirms your theory.

Best moment so far: "Domo arigato, mr. Roboto."

Yes, Mikadzuki, I loved that too.

This is easily the WORST OSCARS EVER!

I guess it wouldn't be the Oscars if it wasn't boring and predictable

I hate to say it, but even the folks at CNN are more innovative than the people behind the Oscars! What gives?

God, "All That Jazz"? Shoot me now. A grat song, but too campy in context.

There's just nothing interesting to blog about. It's all so boring.

GREAT, that is.

You would think with all the talented people working on this show they would come up with something original and entertaining

I'm actually really liking the show so far. Quite classy - although that musical number, while fun, but camp and out of place - and the stage looks great and no terribly embarrassing moments and some good speeches (Philippe Petit balancing the Oscar on his chin, Heath Ledger, some others) and I think the set up of the awards is working really well.

I'm not sure what people wanted. it's the Oscars, you can't just throw everything out and turn it into a psychedelic rave or whathaveyou.

Also, it's great to see a ceremony devoted to movies from the year in question and not 1949 or whatever.

Sorry, Nat. But the country is ready for change. After Obama's win, we refuse to settle for mediocrity. Don't cha know?

Good point, Glenn. We're all contrarians at heart, I guess.

Re my previous comment: Confirms your theory of terrible musical Oscar presentaions, that is.

I so want to love you, Oscars, but stop making it so hard with the Twilight guy presenting and other nonsense.

OMG, Christine. We're sooo on the same page.

Isn't it Mumbai (not Bombay)?

Anonymous said...

Wait, is there an interrcial couple (w/ a child) in the new ABC show In the Motherhood?

Mumbai = Bombay

Loving the show so far.

Considering I'm almost 100% so far (I just missed Slumdog for Sound Mixing, though had it as my alternate), I'm finding this a fantastic show so far; the best in years.

Ditch those montage clips (a tribute to romance? WHAT?!), and I'd find it right on the money.

I do, however, miss the thespian clips, though the Supporting Actress presentation was surprising and moving. The Supporting Actress presentation (the presentation; not the winner), less so. But then the gathering of 5 presenters was very much "less so".

The worst component from my perspective watching in the UK is the dire panel of commentators we have during your commercial breaks. Topped off by Stephanie Beacham who is whining and has a problem with everything. With the Tony performances; with Cruz winning; with Ledger winning; with Franco and Rogen mispronouncing and then snickering (did everyone catch Franco receiving a correction from by the winner and his subsequent apology?)

But mostly I'm adoring the staging, the "in the round" presentation, and Hugh Jackman as host.

Arkan, I know that, but thanks for clarifying. I guess I should have worded the question differently. Isn't there a reason for the name change? Isn't it more appropriate (or desirable) for an Indian to say Mumbai?

I'm loving the ceremony-it's classy and, while not quite funny enough, is a celebration of cinema. It's making the year look a lot better than it was, so that's gotta say something.

Sorry; that was Best Supporting Actor presentation that I was criticising in comparison to Supporting Actress.

P.S. Stephanie Beacham is now having a go at Beyoncé for not being Cyd Charisse.

anthony hopkins, adrian brody, ben kingsly...best actor presenters....and last year's winner (can't remember!!!).

Watching that original screenplay clip of Poppy just makes Sally Hawkins's snub sting a little more. Don't forget that Poppy!

That last minute flurry of buzz for Departures was right!

What a great show. The only complaint I have is the screwing up of names (Seymour Phillip Hoffman!), and Maher's snide attack on religion. I didn't hate a single montage, now that's something.

And I know it was telegraphed months ago, but still, HEATH LEDGER WON AN OSCAR FOR THE JOKER!.

This was terrible. I kept hiding my face with my fingers. Why was Jennifer Aniston forced to showboat in that awful dress in front of her ex hubby and his partner? And why did they keep panning to the smug looking couple. I guess that's why they walked home empty handed.

You can tell this joke has passed since no one really laughed.

But I'm sure it will make the Casey Affleck/Phoenix Documentary.
