Let's say you're trapped in a Romantic Comedy....

They (almost) always start with bickering and end with happy coupling. If you had to live inside one of these movies, which would it be? And which of the sparring partners would you most want to fall madly in love with (as soon as you were done fighting)? Tell us all in the comments.

The first one that popped in my mind was Garden State.

but who would you be / fall in love with?

It may be cliché to say Ellie Andrews and Peter Warne from It Happened One Night but that's what my gut tells me. (I'd be the former and fall in love with the latter, of course.)

The Walls of Jericho included or no, clusterfunk?

I'd be in The Philadelphia Story as Tracy Lords and my beloved as CK Dexter Haven. Some of the best rom-com bickering on screen ever.

ill love to fall in love of ryan reynolds in definitely, maybe

I'd be in Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day. I can be either the adorable Lee Pace or the adorable Amy Adams. Either way I'm adorable and can sing.

Catherine Keener's character in Walking and Talking eerily presaged my life. Saw it at 15, and those uncomfortable "I'm losing my best friend to boys ew," etc, dynamics started to blossom.

Thank goodness that my boyfriend is way better than Liev Schrieber's character in that film - although the Lievster does seem fairly fun in bed in that film. Good senses of humor always work!

Having recently caught a bit of My Best Friend's Wedding, and remembering how cracked and wonderful that movie is, I'm going with that one. I'm afraid I'd have to fall in love with Rupert Everett, though I really want to be one of the sisters with the giant hats.

I would be Doris Day in "Pillow Talk." I'd "bicker" with Rock Hudson and then...I don't think any further explanation is needed.

Bringing Up Baby. And of course I'd be the madcap, motormouth heiress Susan Vance falling for the nerdy, yet still suave and sexy Dr. David Huxley. Oh, what I would give just to say "Daaavid" exactly like Hepburn does in that movie.

Chewitel Ejiofor in Love, Actually.

I know it's not a romantic comedy....shoot me.

"Falling in Love" with Streep & DeNiro. And who did I want to fall in love with? I could never figure out whether I wanted to be on top or on the bottom.

Ha...no Walls of Jericho (for obvious, Gable-specific reasons, of course)!

The first one that popped in my head was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but everyone is WAY too f*cked up to have a relationship with, so I'll go with my ultimate rom com, Lost in Translation and fall in love with Japan...JK...Scarlett (when she was still Scarlett and not that horrendous alien, ScarJo, that inhabited her body).

27 dresses, Judy Greer would be my crazy best friend and Jimmy Marsden would be my Elton John singing love interest.

WIN WIN people!!

Rachel said...

You'd lose cause you'd still be in "27 Dresses".

I'd be in "Enchanted". And I'd have a threeway with Dempsey and Marsden.

FranklinBluth said...

Dempsey is bland town. Marsden all the way!!!

Everyone Says I Love You, because apparently Drew Barrymore loves "early American chandeliers" ;)

Vicky Christina Barcelona pops into my imagination, I guess I would love to be Maria Elena and fall in and out of love in repetitive cycles with my very own Juan Antonio... Voila! That was easy!

Terris said...

Dirty Dancing! (But... is it a romantic COMEDY?)
Anyway... I'll fall in love with Patrick Swayzes's character... but I won't be Baby... I'll be Penny!

@normadesmond: good choice! =) I'll definitely fall in love with De Niro... he's so charming...

Terris said...

And guys... THE PRESIDENT!! Michael Douglas: shoul I add more? =)

Murtada said...

I would be in enchanted too, and even though Amy Adams is so charming I'd rather be James Mardsen faling for Dempsey

hmmm. not a big rom-com fan. (probably because it’s the prime territory of my nemesis, Ms. Bullock). I’ll go with a good old classic… 'THE MISFITS'.

I mean, I’d be surrounded by two of the most gorgeous, swoon-inducing men in the history of the cinema; CLARK GABLE and my beloved MONTY CLIFT. a bit of a re-write would be needed, huh, but i'd want to be Langland and fall in love with Perce (sorry Marilyn).

I could definitely see myself as Jane Fonda being in love, bickering, then falling back in love with Robert Redford in Barefoot in the Park.

I'd love to have the chance to teach an Ivy League sort how to loosen up (and spend a whole Honeymoon in bed).

I'd want to be Irene Dunne in The Awful Truth. Have Cary Grant act all nuts about me!

Carl Joseph Papa said...

Hmmm "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", if that counts as comedy. I would want to fall in love with Clementine over and over again even if I have to do it in fast forward or reverse.

Fernando Moss said...

When Harry Met Sally.... but I would want to fall for Kirsten Dunst in Crazy/Beautiful (I know it's not a comedy, but still is romantic).

I'd fall in love with Paul Rudd in Role Models. When he has coffee with Elizabeth Banks and asks her "Where am I gonna find someone that hates all the same stuff as me?" and then proceeds to misquote Notting Hill at her, only to fall back on Ghostbusters. I can never believe that Elizabeth Banks isn't won over!

NATHANIEL R said...

ryan t adorable w/ singing talent. I approve of your flexibility!

elisabeth liev actually plays good in bed in Painted Veil also. Hmmmm... onscreen/offscreen truths. someone call naomi watts

katey even if you don't end up with someone in My Best Friends Wedding it's still a win win. If you gotta live inside a movie, it better be fun/interesting/and way better than it had any right to be

NATHANIEL R said...

franklin & rachel your exchange there...LOL... Maybe you're about to co-star in a bickering romcom!? you'll be madly in love in about 84 minutes!

charade...to be able to verbally spar with such subtext and then get cary grant
hitch...to get will smith to chase after me would be fantastic
barefoot in the park...oh, redford!
the original mr & mrs smith...to be as fabulous as carole lombard and land robert montgomery
16 candles...who didn't want him to show up at your door?

ShoNuff Lives said...

i totally forgot the princess bride...to be buttercup & fall in love with an incredibly hot and sassy cary elwes

Love Actually

- Christmas season all around, hello?
- I'd so do Hugh Grant the Awesome PM
- Or be the slutty secretary and seduce Alan Rickman into bed
- And then there's Liam Neeson, Colin Firth...it's a hot crowd.

Guys And Dolls, I`ll make Marlon sing to me even if he isnt that good at it.

David Coley said...

Moonstruck. I'll be Nicolas Cage's one-handed casanova and carry off Cher.

Derreck said...

Notting Hill.

I'd fall in love with the most desired/famous woman in the world and have a nice little apartment in Notting Hill. Plus, i'm already the stammering, awkward type like Hugh Grant's character.

Derreck said...

and ooh, Serendipity.

a real guilty pleasure of mine. I wouldn't mind falling for Kate Beckinsale. Plus, the whole destiny/fate aspect is so magical. It would be alot of fun to live through the events as everything ties together to reunite the destined lovers.

ah, that sounds lovely....even if fate screws with two happy relationships to make one.

Chris Na Taraja said...

Sho Nuff said mine, it would be THE PRINCESS BRIDE, who doesn't want Cary Ewles in their house saying, "As you wish."?

If I can't do that, than I would love to be falling in love with Scarlet Johansen in LOST IN TRANSLATION, not only because she's beautiful, but because I sing better Kareoki than Bill Murray, plus I would get to whisper something mysterious and funny in her ear in the end.

I also fell in love with Charlize Theron in THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE, so if I was Will Smith, I would stay, but would I have to choose between Charlize and Matt Damon? Am I bisexual?! Probably not, I'm allowed to love who ever I like, freely on screen.

«What do Women Want», but I'd dump Helen Hunt to keep Marisa Tomei...

david coley do you like to be slapped around?

SNAP OUT OF IT.

everyone hmmm. lots of love for Lost in Translation

'A Life Less Ordinary', and I'd fall in love with Ewan McGregor.

Trouble in Paradise.

Doesn't matter which of the three leads. All are divine. I think I'd be Herbert Marshall. Even missing a leg, he's one suave mofo.

Oh so many....

Adam's Rib, Love Actually, While You Were Sleeping (sorry Ryan), Bridget Jones, Someone Like You (a real guilty pleasure with Hugh Jackman). I can feed him cold Chinese food in his boxer briefs anytime.

I don't know if this qualifies for a romantic comedy but I'll also include the 80's classic "Satisfaction". I can sing way better than Justine Bateman and I'd stay with Liam Neeson and never leave the beach.

That's easy, The Family Stone. I'd be uptight Meredith and Ben (Luke Wilson) could loosen me up. You can't beat the view of sweatpants from the passenger side! :p

I'd like to be Audrey Hepburn with Peter O'Toole in Paris in "How to Steal a Million". Ah, Paris. Ah, Givenchy. Ah, Peter.
