Gee-ni-us (Casting).

Jose here.

There's a rumor circling the web and European media stating that Penélope Cruz has been cast in Lars von Trier's new film Melancholia.

If this is true then the Oscar winning actress will be battling some heavy personal issues while Lars destroys our planet.
The film will center on the impending collision of Earth with planet Melancholia (the man doesn't even try to conceal how much he loves Tarkovsky does he?).

When the movie was announced last October, the only thing Lars told people to expect were "no more happy endings".
Lars isn't really a filmmaker who cares what others think of him but I wonder how will Cruz fare out in all of this.

I love the road she's taking recently: Woody Allen, an Oscar, an Almodóvar film, a musical and now von Trier-her choices are very Nicole Kidman if you ask me-and might just continue to establish her presence as one of our greatest actresses.

Until the news are confirmed, or denied, we can drool (in my case), complain or speculate about how Pe and Lars will do together. Do you think she'll be as good as Emily, Bjork, Bryce, Charlotte and Nicole?

This is so exciting. It'll definitely be interesting to see how this turns out.

Holy hell! If this is true, this has just made my day.

PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

Are we ever gonna get the films your most excited about in 2010?

Those are some big shoes to fill. I still find most of her English performances are less than impression.

Very interested to see how this turns out... Emily, Bjork, Nicole and Charlotte turned in superhuman performances (I wasn't overly enamoured with Bryce), and I'm sure Cruz has it in her.

And definitely a Kidman-esque career choice.

Can't wait! But Charlotte is a hard one to follow.

I wonder if she's gonna have a lot of sex.

Screw that, I just heard that Scorsese might start filming the movie "Silence" with the rumored cast of Benecio Del Toro, Daniel Day Lewis, and Gael Garcia Bernal.

*fangirly shriek*

watch out for katie holmes!
start to imagine her with woody allen, lars von trier, in a musical and WITH AN OSCAR!
If Tom Cruise has to exist for doing that to women, then I can't hate him anymore..
that is, if katie turns out to be a good actress.. which i guess she won't.

Agustin... you never know. few saw the triumphs of Cruz and Kidman coming.

i'm not just talking proving themselves. but becoming two of the best actresses on the planet.

shocking. if you could transport us all back in time who would believe it?

I'm kind of worried though. Both Bjork and Nicole were traumatized by working with Lars. I just hope Penelope has a cuddly teddy bear and some candy and lollipops and Coronas with her during this experience. Hell, I just wrote the best rider ever!

It'd be awesome if Lars would one day direct a woman in an Oscar winning role.

Wow. Tell me 10 years ago - hell, 5 years ago - anyone predicted that Penelope Cruz would not only have a career, but be one of the most exciting actresses working in the world, and set to star in a Lars von Trier movie.

Even if this turns out to be shoddier and more unintentionally sad than Antichrist (and that synopsis is preparing me for the inevitable), I will cherish the experience.

I am insanely excited for this.

Kidmanesque? where are her Bewitched, Stepford wives and Invasion?

That's a movie I'd love to see, even if she's going to suffer. Seeing Javier back home after a day of torture on the set must soften it a little.

Let's hope it's closer to Dogville than to Antichrist.

I liked the comparison Kidman-Cruz, it seems both are getting the better of Hollywood not knowing what to do with them.

Maybe Cruz realises that she works better with auteurs, much like Kidman, and that her strengths just DO NOT lie in mainstream fare.

Gawd this pairing is insane. I love it!

Better than Bjork in Dancer in the dark... impossible

Good for Penélope although I don´t really like her as an actress

I don´t understand how she has become a big star in Hollywood. There are son many spanish actresses who are much better and talented. I´m spanish.

I was hoping to not have to be the bearer of bad news but it seems Penelope is also signed up for PIRATES 4. I guess her agents made a deal that she would be raped by a meteor for Lars (or whatever he has in store) as long as she did the franchise gig.
