Red Carpet Lineup (Kate Winslet x 12)

Oscar night rapidly approaches. Any guesses as to what color Kate might likely be wearing on Sunday night? I'll give you one guess. One guess only.

If you get it wrong we will all be forced to point and laugh at you!

Seriously what is up with Winslet this year? 'Why so serious?' When you peruse these photos from (left to right, photos from JAMD) London, Santa Barbara, the Golden Globes, SAG, Oscar Luncheon, Berlinale, and BAFTA) you can only presume that she will be wearing something black, probably with sharp angles or cut outs. Either Kate isn't using a stylist or her stylist is on holiday. But not the kind of holiday that involves houseswapping with Cameron Diaz. Which all begs the question: What possessed Kate to suddenly perk up all electric blue for SAG?

Hmmm. On second thought she's never worn black as an actual nominee...

It was hot pink for Sense & Sensibility, green (appropriate!) for Titanic, red for Iris, periwinkle for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and pale green for Little Children. What color will The Reader inspire her to don?

I hope it's not black again. The blue she wore to the SAG was just so stunning.

Light brown. I happen to have secret information. :p

I remember LOVING LOVING LOVING her 2002 dress! with the flowers.

2007 is SO elegant.
1996 just looks cheap.
1998 is too voluptuos, close to kinky.

Noooooooo, No Black! She looked so beautiful at SAG and she's never wore black on the Oscar red carpet before. I'm going to put it in my predictions that she doesn't wear black on Sunday!

My favourite was her red Ben de Lisi dress she wore in '02. I even had a dream once that Kate was showing me all her oscar dresses in her wardrobe and I was telling her that the red one was my favourite.....and then I woke up. :p

the red one was an Oscar dress. Too bad she has no chance in hell of winning for Iris.

let's just hope she doesn't screw it up like Helen Mirren did with her Oscar dress (after looking fabulous at the Bafta's).

They should have a schedule for the dresses for the awards season. Start in November. Choose the best dress for Oscar and go from there.

Maybe she will wear yellow...the kind that gives you a migrane ;)

2007 was divine. I'm hoping for white or a pale blue. Or purple.

Actually I don't care. Whatever she wears, an Oscar statue would be the perfect accessory. That's all I'm hoping for on Sunday.

Also, have you seen the TIME cover?

she should just wear her skin. this could either be as an homage to kristen scott thomas or as a representation of 50% of the reader. alternate? really depressing, worn out brown to pay tribute to the other 50% of the film.

When she wore Black to the Globes, I said to my TV, "Okay, Kate, you've used your black dress card. Color for the Oscars, please".

Here's hoping...

Maybe she's setting us up to really, really love the red dress she'll wear. That red dress was hands-down her best, and the '07 and '05 were close seconds.

I will always remember the green dress from the Titanic year... Because of the long sleeves, I remember thinking that it looked like some Renaissance fair dress.

Wow, I LOVE the green titanic dress. She looks like a mermaid or something. It could be interpreted as gaudy, I suppose, but I love it. It totally works with the voluptuousness and red hair that she had back then. Reminds me a bit of Julianne's glorious '03 dress.

I'm thinking The Reader will be something muted. Black, or brown, or maybe a deep purple. Or perhaps beige or white.

Is Kate on the Time cover????

The View used almost those exact same pictures this morning when discussing why Kate has only wore black this Oscar season. They had this exact same conversation this morning.

Maybe she thinks it appropriate, since she starred in two über-bleak and depressing movies.

Speaking of, has anyone seen those ads where some critic is quoted as saying The Reader was "one of the most uplifting movie experiences you will EVER see"??

That's absurd.

well, her 8-year-old daughter, mia, is picking out her dress so i'm thinking either a barbie pink hello, kitty number with lace, feathers and purple satin opera length gloves or vintage valentino.
its really a toss up.
p.s. kate was 3 rows in front of me last night at THE WINTER'S TALE that sam directed at BAM and she was wearing a long gray sweater, black jeans, and converse.

The "most uplifting" commercial is by far the most ridiculous advertisement of the year. You could call The Reader many things (and I have) but "uplifting" isn't one of them.

I'd prefer the "Horny Nazi Self-Improvement Movie of the Year!"

I loved that dress too. I love her other Oscar outfits too, but after that gown it seemed like she played it safe. I mean she always looked great, but the dresses look sort of the same to me with the red dress being the best, but the other two just sort of being variations on it.

Mmm, if it weren't for Jim T.'s insider information, I would have predicted that she would have wore black or gold, the latter because I don't think she's ever worn it, and because she has the best chance to ever win before and gold would be fitting, imo.

Tina Fey has used up her black dress card...

Winslet is going to wear a nice violet colored dress...

All this positive Kate chatter is like a cool balm, I love it; thanks for this post, Nat. I've grown so tired of the anti-Kate sentiment I seem to be seeing everywhere.

All that said, I hope she wears this dress. Elegant AND classy!

She mentioned on The View that her daughter had called her out for wearing so much black, so I'm guessing she'll go for color this time (but not pink, since her daughter's helping to pick it out and apparently believes that "nobody over the age of 10 should really wear pink").

No she's going to wear the gold/cream/white/champagne colour all Best Actress winners wear. Take a look, Marion, Helen, Reese and Charlize have all wore the 'winner colour'. I think you are contractually obliged to wear the colour if you're going to win, probably so that you look like an Oscar yourself.

It must have the shape of the '05 dress and this year SAG's. She has a beautiful figure; her curves are sexy and elegant at the very same time. Those two dresses were a second skin to Kate Winslet's body.

ice blue like grace kelly wore.

OK, funny story:

So I started watching "View" clips on YouTube after hearing about Winslet being on, and after I watched her stuff, I watched their recent interview with Jane Krakowski.

And there was one incredibly awkward exchange where, when asked if there's a broadway show she's always wanted to do, Jane says "well right now I'd LOVE to do a broadway show and then get to play the same role on film, since you then know the character so well." And Joy Behar has the nerve to ask why it is that stage stars never seem to reprise their roles in film versions of the shows. She's like "you never see that happen? Why is that?" D-U-H.

Jane then gets this really awkward look on her face (having JUST been passed over for the film version of Nine) and eventually says, "well, it's most likely because those movies are able to get huge stars in them. Like, MOVIE stars." Then someone else quickly and smartly changes the subject.

You can tell she didn't wanna go there, but basically had no choice if she was gonna answer the question (it's a pretty obvious thing). SO awkward.

I thought Nat would appreciate. Everyone should watch on YouTube, it's pretty entertaining.

1. She'll wear purple.

2. That TIME Magazine cover??? Wow. Harvey's back, ladies and gentlemen. If Streep wins.... "Dewey defeats Truman" indeed. There's hubris, then there's that.

I think the color of Kate's dress should be the tiebreaker if you're participating in an oscar prediction contest. With my family, though, the tiebreaker question is "how many times will the camera cut to jack nicholson laughing/smiling?"

I always forget how thin 1996 Kate was. My God, those curves are welcome in that unforgettable Titanic dress.

I have to admit though that like many here, 2002 is tops. Everyone is wearing red this year. The Winslet was doing it in 2002, bitches!

She looked stunning in blue. I hope she dons anything but black on Sunday. I say violet.

I'm hoping for like... a bright purple color. She's so gorgeous and could pull off a dramatic color.

2004 is one of my favorites ever. EVER. Soooooo stunning.

I'd say purple, but dark. And I'm still surprised why so many people (including me) care?
