Sissy

I had no idea how many of you were fans but in the long running comments (almost to 100) on that August: Osage County casting post she seems to be a favorite for Violet. So here's to Sissy getting another role that's worthy of her sometime soon. It's been eight years since the last one.

next week: I'll try to touch on Death Becomes Her (1992), Grey Gardens (2009), I Love You Beth Cooper, Brüno, a little more on Chéri, Schindler's List (1993), Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, The River Wild (1994) and The Hurt Locker.

Ugh... She's so overrated. Such a mousy, childish actress who is ALWAYS the same. She never outgrew the Carrie role and her oscar winning Lorreta Lynne is indistinguishable from any of her other "characters". Next.

Sir, show some respect for Mrs. Fisk. I don't see Loretta Lynn and Carrie being at all alike. She plays them both beautifully. Love her work in "Missing" as well.

I haven't watched her many times but In the Bedroom was enough for me to like her. And I love that photo. Evil (or at least not cute) and pretty at the same time.Is it from Carrie?

She is one of great 1949 actresses.
But Shelly Duvall is better then her in "Three Women".

Jessica Lange
Meryl Streep
ShellY Duvall
Sissy Spacek
Sigourney Weaver

wow~~

1949, great year for actress

I'll be disappointed if you don't like Grey Gardens. Cause I saw it tommorow and it was work of art..

the comment above me is perfectly ridiculous.

Nathaniel, this has nothing to do with the talented and beautiful sissy spacek but what is the name of that actor!? (right before the last; from your collection of actors&actresses) I've droven myself crazy just trying to remember for the past hour.

i love it when people respond to posts anonymously and say something childish like siss is the same in every part, have you seen the river, badlands, blast from the past, the long walk home, missing, marie,in the bedroom, the ring 2,crimes of the heart,badlands,3 women, night mother, raggwdy man.

she brings something to every role a truth a lightness of touch never histionic even when playing a generic role such as in ring 2 she is always the best thing in the film.

she totally outgrew her carrie role the above don't have anything similar ruth fowler would smash a plate over carries head for being such a wimp!!!!!

Schindler's List? Is that Best Picture series returning? Please?

I hadn't even thought of Sissy Spacek for Violet until now. I've always thought of either Meryl or Glenn for it (imaginative, I know). I hope they would give Sissy a new look or something for the role. It seems like she's in that loose bob for so long now. Kinda like the way Katharine Hepburn was looking so similar in role after role, and my suspension of disbelief is only so high. There needs to be some variety somewhere. But it is true that Sissy Spacek deserves a role soon that merits her talent again. None of that "North Country" nonsense that just about any run-of-the-mill actress could have pulled off adequately.

cal the best picture series is returning yes. no more hiatus.

anon 12:15 wow. i had never realized so many greats in one year. And yes, Duvall is better than Spacek in Three Women. But the movie is just heaven for actressing fans.

J i'm not sure what "collection" you mean. er...

j do you mean in the banner itself right now? That's Joaquin Phoenix... looking vaguely like Jonathan Rhys Meyers ;)

J said...

Thanks Nat! Yes I meant the banner, sorry about that.

Sissy would be magnificent as Violet. Anyone know if a movie of August: Osage County is in the works?

Also, would love to see Sissy's take on an eccentric character as she hits her 60s as contrast to her initial roles:
3 Women - personality shifting odd ball
Welcome to LA -
Carrie - "creepy Carrie"
Katherine - 60s radical terrorist type
Ginger in the Morning - 60s hitchhiking free spirit type
Badlands - serial killer accomplice
Prime Cut - 1st feature and she finds herself the leading lady playing a sex slave no less opposite two best actor winners (Gene Hackman who won the previous year & Lee Marvin, who won 7 years prior to this) - not bad Sissy!

...although some of these are now landmark iconic roles (especially Badlands & Carrie), at the time, it's a wonder she made it to mainstream respectability so lightning fast by 1980 circa Coal Miner's Daughter at which point she was an A list top female star who'd get best actress nominated every other year 4 times in a row.

Whoa, can't a guy have an opinion anymore? In response to Mrripley, I HAVE seen all of those films so let me clarify, forgive the hyperbole, she's not literally the same in every role, I just don't see her as a massively versatile actress like Streep, Barbara Hershey, Joan Allen, Dianne Weist etc. She has a wan screen presence and I truly cannot see a difference between her Loretta Lynne and her Babe in "Crimes of the Heart". I also found "In the Bedroom" a completely useless performance with many, many missed opportunities.

she's always candid and frozen, that's my opinion. But she can also be interesting, like in 'Badlands' and 'Coal Miner's Daughter'. Period.

ABM - anyone but Meryl. I'd be thrilled w sissy spacek.

what would make me happier - chubby marsha mason, or jill clayburgh, or best of all: ann-margret. give her a big comeback chance. mike nichols turned ann-margret's career around in "carnal knowledge.".

i'd also be happy with ellen burstyn. but we all know, it's going to end up being Meryl.

One of the roles I really liked Spacek in was as Carolyn Cassady in the movie "Heartbeat" with Nick Nolte as Neil Cassady and John Heard as Jack Kerouac.

The first shot of Spacek is amazing. She's got up as a 1940s-1950s glamour girl with a platinum French twist and a cool remote expression. Very Grace Kelly. And I thought, why can't they make her look like that more often? It doesn't stop her from ACTING.

In The Bedroom, Coalminer's Daughter, The Straight Story --- I enjoy Sissy she's a unique actress who can play roles that others don't quite fit.

Not only would I love to see Sissy as Violet I would love her to win a second Oscar.

mrripley said...

in the bedroom useless wake up call smashing plates, her confession to the oriest, the way she reaches out to her son but never quite gets there, the silences conveying so much with so little,"oh matt" after her son is beaten up,the confession about the slap,THE SLAP,her reaction to her friends faux pas,all these make this creation the 2001 oscar winner imo.other actresses may have overplayed the role of grieving mum lange and close come to mind and look what berry did wat ott.sometimes the quieter moments are best like watts in 21 grams her best moments were not ott but the silent smaller ones.

John T said...

I'd love to see her return to the great performances-she (or, well, any of the other actresses), should have won an Oscar in 2001.

Halle Berry earned every bit of that freakin' Oscar! But anyways, Sissy Spacek as Violet? That's certainly a way to go with the character. You know someone who would be AWESOME as Violet? Blythe Danner. This could finally be her big Oscar in after a great career in stage and television. It's kind of criminal that this woman has never been nominated for an Oscar, but her daughter's won one. But we all know the role's going to Meryl. So next.

i loved danner i nthe great santini best supp actress 1980 nominee.
