Noni x 4

Apropos of (absolutely) nothing, Winona Ryder's four best performances

1) Leilana --exactly the right year for the Oscar nomination, wrong performance nominated. 2) Veronica 3) Lydia 4) Johnny's girl

...I realize the fourth isn't exactly a Performance but it's definitely a Role and deserving of honor, Johnny & Winona being arguably the greatest modern Young Hollywood couple Young Hollywood ever dreamt up. If you wanna be a stickler you can throw Charlotte Flax or May Welland in there but I like my 4th better so consider them tied for 5th.

Lelaina! No mention of Susanna Kaysen? Pff.

Oh come on, no Abigail Williams? It's one of my favorite psycho bitch roles. She drinks blood, naked! Give her the Oscar! (Actually, give it to Joan Allen, but whatever.)

She brings a pointy reckoning for you, Nat!

thanks Vinci. i was going to say. I don't object to the age of nomination. but that little women nod. sheesh. she was a gazillion times more in tune with Leilana (Reality Bites) but, oh yeah, contemporary youthful comedy... and we all know how little Oscar cares for those, Juno aside.

Well, I love Kim in Ed Scissorhands...Winno was playing against type and really made a gothic and cute couple with Johnny.

I thought that Winona Ryder was great in "Little Women." If there had been no Miranda Richardson that year, I'd given her the Oscar. Anything except that godawful Jessica Lange film.

I'm surprised Winona had the career she did. Age of Innocence was over-rated, but perhaps I should watch it again. Outside of Veronica, Lelaina, her work with Tim Burton, Depp's girlfriend and the dubious honor of having dated the most musicians than any other person on this planet in any time era, I find her work from bland (Quilt, Alien) to bad (Crucible) to off-target (Girl, Interrupted). Although, she was quite good in her troubled starlet cameo in S1mone, which leads to me to think she has a future in supporting roles. But, leads? Meh.

Bad luck for Linda Fiorintino that in 1994 The Last Seduction premiered on Showtime before it hit theatres.

Nat, at what point did you decide that Annalee Call in Alien: Resurrection would not make this cut? Please to express your answer in number of seconds elapsed into Alien: Resurrection.

What no mention of her cameo in The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things?

"Owwwee, owwee, owwee."

She would have deserved some more recognition for that had Asia Argento kept the camera on Winona longer.

nat ok then your 94 best actress noms.

my 94 noms i'd need to rewatch but I'd definitely go with

JULIETTE LEWIS Natural Born Killers
WINONA RYDER reality bites

and some combo of
JUDY DAVIS in The Ref and/or The New Age, JODIE FOSTER nell, JENNIFER JASON LEIGH mrs parker and the vicious circle, JAMIE LEE CURTIS true lies and KATE WINSLET in heavenly creatures

I actually thought Noni was very good as Jo March, far better than I was expecting. I rampaged for months before the movie came out about what I considered (and still consider) ludicrous casting, and then was pleasantly surprised when I actually saw her.

But yeah, she'll always be the Gen-X poster child for me.

I wish she would have a career comeback, I really do.

strange 94 choices nat i'd go with

sigourney weaver death and the maiden
jodie foster nell - my winner
meg ryan - when a man loves a woman
crissy rock - lady brid lady bird
miranda richardson - tom and viv

Nathaniel,

Aren't you forgetting Julianne Moore in Vanya on 42nd Street?

My nominees for 94:

1. Lewis - Natural Born Killers
2. Moore - Vanya on 42nd Street
3. Winona Ryder - Reality Bites
4. Leigh - Mrs. Parker...
5. Kate Winslet - Heavenly Creatures

NATHANIEL R said...

omg yes. i was forgetting Moore. oops. it's probably because i didn't see that movie until 1995 after falling in love with Julianne in Safe.

Are you crazy? Winona was luminous in "Little Women", by far the best female perf of '94. The scene where she turns down Laurie's proposal is proof enough.

Is Juliette your win? If so, you're the bestest blogger in the universe. If not, you're an uninformed cunt and I hope you choke.

KIDDING!

if you think Juliette was playing the KOOK in NBK than you weren't paying attention.

there's a whole demonic soundtrack playing in her head that nobody but her can hear. Inventive, creepy, mood-spinning brilliance. (that scene in the jail cel "i guess i was born... naturally born" she gives me the chills.

She's freaking amazing in that movie (and better than any of Oscar's nominees that year)

THE TUNE PLAYING IN HER HEAD IS ON REPEAT FROM 1991'S CAPE FEAR AND 1993'S WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAE & 1994'S KALIFORNIA.

KYLIE SAYS IT BEST "EVERYTIME IHEAR YOUR MUSIC SINGING THE SAME OLD TUNE"

nat this constant hosannahs for your faves is verging on the ridiculous.

I'm going to add to the chorus of commenters who thought Ryder was pretty great in Little Women.

Also, if only we lived in a world where the #4 could have been Mary Corleone...
